This is exactly what E does! Its like once she masters a word - or a skill - she moves onto the next challenge!

E was like that. She would use a word a few times and then stop altogether. At 24 months, she really only had a few (less than five) words she was saying consistently, I was starting to get worried, but then all of a sudden around 25 months, her language exploded and she was adding new words to her vocabulary quicker than I could count them, including a lot of less commonly used words. Now, at 29 months, she has a huge vocabulary and speaks it pretty clearly, it just took her a bit longer to get there in the end.

It is worth noting though that her receptive language has been good from the start and even when she wasn't saying any real words, she could understand what was being said at a very good level (ie following two and three step directions at 18 months). Because of that, I wasn't worried about the expressive language development and knew it would come in time.

And they have almost no words either, particularly DS. I'm not really worried about it and neither is our pediatrician, I'm sure your little man is fine!

@Ra: Well, you can reassure yourself that E has less words than B! I don't think there is anything wrong, because if we ask him to "shake the bottle" (a safety bottle full of colace, lol) he'll do it. If we ask him to "shut the cabinet" or "clap his hands", he'll do it.

But he has NO words. None. Zero. Nada. Zip. Not even "mama" and "dada". And I'm not worried. He understands a ton, but he's a stubborn little redhead. If we ask him to say something simple, he'll smile and run off, the little nut.

DD1 would say 'da' for EVERYTHING. Even at 2.5 years if she is really excited she will just point and say 'da'. I asked my Ped and she just said, if it's working to get her point across, she doesn't really need to use the actual word. One day it really all started coming together.

@Ra: this is exactly how C was. She had high comprehension, but didn't hardly talk. At 2, she had an explosion and started talking a TON. Night and day difference.

I wouldn't really worry too much quite yet. The range of normal is really wide in regards to speech at this age.

Sadie wasn't very verbal at all until she hit her language explosion somewhere between 18-19 months. I think I asked the same questions. Now at 21 months she's talking in phrases! Their verbal development happens so quickly and suddenly it's really incredible... don't worry!

I think that's pretty normal. I think my ped looked for about 10 words at 18 months. And my son did the same thing. He would be really into a word and say it a lot and then he wouldn't use it anymore. His language really exploded from 18-24 months. And It really took off the couple months before he turned 2.

@Radish: He does the same thing with animal noises! He learned to meow like a cat and for a week or two would meow whenever he saw a cat or we asked "What does a cat say?" Now, if you ask what a cats says, he looks at you like you have three heads. Same with barking, buzzing, roaring, etc.

I personally would not worry if I were in your shoes - my LO was very similar at that age. At just shy of 2 we have seen a real explosion over the past 6 weeks.

I'm not a specialist, but I don't think its uncommon to not speak much at this age, or to "lose" words. If he's able to comprehend what you're saying, I wouldn't be too concerned at this point.

I think a lot of kids don't really take off on language until after 18 months. I think my pediatrician was looking for 3 at 15 months and maybe 10 by 18 months? From what I understand it's really common to "lose" words and then come back to them.

@Ra: DS is 18 months old with a speech delay- our Pedi asked about it at our 15 month apt and referred him to a speech pathologist. From there we were referred to Early Intervention! He had 2 words at 15 months. Now he has about 20- but doesn't use them all- all the time. He also just says things once (or twice, or for a whole day) then doesn't say them again. It wouldn't hurt to ask your pedi about it!

B is 17 months old and doesn't have many words. I know you aren't supposed to compare, but it's glaringly obvious when we around other kids his age.

The weird thing is, he will learn a new word, use it in the correct context for a week or two, and then never use it again. For example, he learned the word "tree." Whenever we saw a tree he would point and say the word. Now, even with prompting, he won't say tree. This has been his pattern with most words. It's almost as if as soon as he has a word down he refuses to ever utter it again?

At 17 months, the only words he says consistently are mama, dada, and ball.

He will repeat words that we say immediately after we say them and he babbles a lot with varying degrees of inflection. He's also going through a stage where all day he points and wants to know the word for EVERYTHING.

Should we be concerned? Is there any chance he's just committing words to memory and waiting to bust them all out when he has his language explosion?
