My LO had a cold/stuffy nose a lot when she first started daycare but I voted not normal (based upon the little information you gave). My daycare has a policy of wiping down each swing/bouncer etc between children and they will put a toy into the cleaning solution if a child has chewed on it/put it in their mouth as soon as that child moves on. They wipe down diaper area after every change even though they also use disposable changing papers on top of the pad for each child.

have you tried giving her vitamin D on a daily basis? A study showed that vitamin D is 800% more effective than a flu shot, and low levels of vitamin D is the number cause for the common cold and flu - totally explains why most people get sick in the winter!

I used to get sick in the winter and basically be sick ALL WINTER LONG. It was awful. This past year I was pregnant and my mw put me on 5,000 iu's of vit D a day (a little much for a kid, they probably only need 500-1,000) and I didn't get sick once. Even though I'm a nanny with a kid who goes to school. I was shocked and amazed!

It sounds normal.

A few things maybe to ask them:
How often are crib sheets changed?
Is the diaper station cleaned between each child?
How often do they wash the kids hands?
Do they ever disinfect the toys (meaning like run them through a washer)?

Awwww, I hope your LO feels better!

I voted normal too. My LO had bronchiolitis the first week of daycare and now she has pneumonia! I asked the dr and she said this is par for the course for the first and second year...especially at daycare. She says by age 3 kids should have much better immune systems.

My LO (and I) have been sick twice since she started daycare two months ago. It's gross, but I think it's pretty common at all daycare centers, especially if there are toddlers anywhere nearby or if any of the babies have older siblings.

I think the only solutions would be a much smaller center like @mrs. wagon suggested, or using a nanny or au pair.

It depends what things are you talking about. Changing tables? Cribs? Bouncers? Toys that have been chewed on?

@pelikila: I do agree with the tables and criba areas (we actually supply our own sheet, so they never share those).

I voted that it was normal, because Wagon Jr. was sick pretty much once a week in the beginning too. But if you feel that uncomfortable I would start looking just in case. Maybe a home-based daycare with less kids?

Wagon Sr.'s cousin is an ER doctor and he calls young children "bugbags". They're just sick all the time... and like you said, the more sick they are now, the less sick they are when they're of school age!

I would say that isn't necessarily common but not uncommon either depending on the type of daycare. Our daycare keeps a bin where after toys have been played with they go into the bin for washing that night before being shared with the group again. They aren't perfect in taking each and every toy away before another baby gets to it but in general I know they are paying attention. Also, they get new sheets every day and each baby is assigned their own crib. If a crib has to be used by a different baby, new sheets are put on the mattress. The diapering table is sanitized between each baby and tables are sanitized after every meal time (including snacks).

ETA: my son started going to daycare at 2 months and didn't get sick until he was 4 months old and that was with ear infections. he has terrible allergies though so he basically has a runny nose all the time. kids are little petri dishes and some reoccurring sickness/colds are to be expected. I was always told expect them to be sick at least once a month for the first year when they are in daycare.

If this is the only issue with the daycare and you really like the provider I would stick it out. I don't think most daycares wipe stuff down between every child with the exception of things that go in their mouth and the changing table. Are other kids at the daycare sick often, if they are then maybe you should talk wth them about their policy of when kids should be staying home (fever, vomiting, etc. ) Also my husband has severe allergies, and my youngest definately has them too, would it be possible if it is mostly respiratory that it could be seasonal allergies?

I know I've mentioned this before, but it's really starting to bug me and I don't know if I should start looking for a new place to watch DD.

In the 9 weeks that DD has been going to daycare, she has been sick every week but 2 of them. I've asked what their policy is on how they clean, and they said they only wipe things down at the end of each day... that's after every baby in the room has had their turn on it!

I understand that she needs exposure to these illnesses in order to build her immune system, but I feel like this is excessive. Is this normal?? I'm really getting tired of seeing her so sick all of the time. (Right now, she can't even breastfeed because she can't breathe)
