@MrsADS: yes, his appt is next week, so we'll be discussing it. I did call and mention the first time, and we decided on a wait and see what happens approach.

@808love: interesting that she was ok the first time...i don't have my hopes up at this point, and am just crossing my fingers soy isnt an issue as well!

@Adira: i agree, definitely not an allergy - if it was an allergy I'd expect a rash or something from the formula.

@cascademom: good to hear your lo tolerated soy ok. My first had mspi for only a few months, and transitioned fine to wcm at 10 months, so maybe the same thing will happen with him!

Our youngest had some reflux issues at 4 months old. When we switched to formula, milk based formulas made him puke big time. We switched him to soy formula and had no problems after that. When it came time for cow's milk, we slowly introduced it. He's handled it okay.

When I was breastfeeding him, I was already about half dairy free because I became lactose intolerant during my pregnancy with him. I started drinking almond and coconut milk during the pregnancy and never stopped because I have my own digestive issues with it since.

Just want to chime in to clarify that MSPI is NOT an allergy. You can be intolerant of something, but not allergic.

He doesn't sound allergic to me. An allergic reaction will affect more than just the digestive system. Both my kids have severe food allergies (one to milk, one to peanuts and tree nuts), and neither had any reaction to my consuming those products and nursing them. It was only when they consumed the products directly that they had allergic reactions.

I breastfed almost always but gave formula for a week during a mastitis antibiotic and LO was ok. A few months later, same formula and she threw up. Then itchy lip with parmesan and vomit with yogurt. Allergist tested but not an official allergy. Doc labeled it an 'intolerance'. Each time LO has more than about 2 Tbs of cheese a day or two days of dairy with meals in a row she usually gets a stomachache or diarrhea. I would go with soy if I were you.

Sounds like mspi to me, honestly :bummed: You could try the formula again and see, I guess- if your baby tolerates it ok, then who knows. I would probably make a ped appt to discuss.

@SweetiePie: haha you'd think I'd know something about it by now, but no, not really! Plus my oldest never took a bottle so it was more about just adjusting my diet... Formula never entered the equation. Seriously though, how is it that so many babies have dairy issues, when all they're supposed to have is milk? Lol

@MrsSRS: maybe? I mean he pooped consistently, but it's possible he was straining a little?

@T.H.O.U.: yea, soy was going to be our next try, but then he took the regular stuff with no issue, so I held off... I agree it's probably nothing serious, but i also hate to think im making him uncomfortable. Maybe we'll give the formula one more shot and see.

Honestly I wouldn't go making life changing action based on one stool. Try the formula again and go from there. I think for a full blown allergy you would have seen it earlier. To me it sounds like just a dairy sensitivity.

Rice can be constipating. Was he constipated and maybe the effort causing the bloody stool?

@Pirouette: well I guess you would know more about that than me, haha. I literally have no allergy experience so I was just trying to think of other possibilities. Dairy is such a difficult allergy to deal with! I guess any allergy is! But dairy seems super hard since so much of what they traditionally eat is dairy. Like, you know, milk 😂

Hope you can figure it out!

@SweetiePie: interesting..he only had mucous that i noticed this time, but he's also really congested. I have no clue if that really affects it. And def not gluten, i have celiac! So actually both times involved brown rice flour i think, which i almost never eat, since i eat quinoa pasta usually...but i can't imagine brown rice being a high allergy food? It is a good thought though! I suppose i should start keeping a food diary...

Fair warning I have no experience.
But it looks like you also had wheat with both of his bad experiences? Pasta and cake. Maybe wheat or gluten? Only suggesting that since he did so well with the formula.
I'd try the formula again and see how he does. If he still does great Id consider other culprits and probably call my ped.

Oh and we had a major drooler. It didn't matter if he was teething or not. And he never had mucousy stools.

I would love some help troubleshooting here, because some major signs are pointing to milk allergy, but I'm not totally convinced. This is long, sorry!

My LO is 4 months. My first was mspi, so i limited most dairy from his birth (but didn't worry about things cooked with butter if i ate out, or look at ingredient lists, just the obvious). At 3.5 months, i had a little of a pasta dish with cheese for dinner, and the next morning he was uncomfortable all morning and then had 2 bloody poops, the first little black flecks and then a little later, bright red streaks. It was more dairy than i usually have, but not a ton. he was fine after that.

Fast forward 10 days and we introduced 2 oz of formula for the first time - milk based. He did great! But my older kid had the flu so we held off on giving it again in case he caught it. So now it's been a week, and on new years, i had a few little pieces of cheese, and a piece of cake that had butter in it. I also ate something for lunch yesterday that made me very sick. I felt kinda sick all night too.

This morning, he was cranky, and i feel a tooth popping through. Gave him a cold teething thing to chew on and he felt much better. He's been a little congested and coughing, presumably from the saliva (sooo much drool!) Then suddenly the same bearing down, followed by a bloody mucousy poop.

Soooo, what gives? It seems like he has the mspi symptoms, except he did great when he got a little milk formula directly, which makes no sense! How could he react so immediately to small amounts in my diet but not to formula? Or could this be something else? Should we try formula again? Can you get bloody poop from teething? The mucous could definitely be from that.

Am i just in denial? I really want to get him on formula and don't want to have to get the special stuff unless we have to! But I don't know what else this could be. Maybe another food other than milk?
