It never hurts to be safe. When my cousin's water broke, she thought she had justbeen having discharge and having trouble controlling her bladder. Turns out she was leaking amniotic fluid. She was already in the hospital on bed rest so they had to do a csection right then.

@JessicaMcB: Hmmhh.. well then I would go ahead and leave a message for the nurse. But if it doesn't stop, consider going to L&D and requesting an U/S to check on your cervix to just be extra sure everything is OK. I'd rather be considered super annoying and paranoid than work myself up with worry!

@MamaMoose: Unfortunately not, they only have one nurse handling all the patients and fielding the calls. I wish though.

And we actually didn't do any ultrasounds yesterday- I suggested it but my doctor told me he thinks they're "nonsense" and that if there was something amiss he'd "just know". I don't understand how that is when another doctor in the practice sent me for a cervical length u/s a month ago, but he really seems to think he'd be able to figure it out better than the radiologist?

@JessicaMcB: My doctor's office does have an option to speak to someone immediately if you feel like you are in an emergency situation. Is this a possibility so you can just get some piece of mind rather than having to wait for hours?

As the others said... I don't think your water is breaking. And I would assume at the U/S yesterday they would have looked at your cervix and made sure it was still closed, long, and firm. But it never hurts to call and just make sure.

@pastemoo: This is really good to know, thank you! I've seen it described as "sweet-smelling" online but never actually referenced against anything you'd come across regularly. Thankfully being Canadian, I know maple syrup and will be on the lookout for it until I get a call back from my OB.

You should always call the triage nurse.

However, I don't think your water broke. You get lots of discharge throughout pregnancy. When my water broke it smelled VERY strongly of maple syrup. All the books say amniotic fluid smells sweet.

@jessiejo17: Thanks, thats what I figured. I guess I'll have to try to get a hold of them right at 8:30 when they open. They "take a message" for the nurse when you call and she calls you back when she feels like it. Yesterday with bleeding I waited 6 hours for a phone call- I probably won't hear back until tomorrow with this :(

I would call your doctor again and see their advice, or maybe the triage nurse and see what she thinks before going on. Maybe see if an ultrasound is needed just to make sure everything looks okay with the baby and fluid surrounding. Better safe than sorry!

(Sorry in advance for this fairly TMI post)

Let me preface this question by saying that I am 23 weeks pregnant and my discharge is generally fairly watery anyway. My OB asked me to go to L&D yesterday because I had some minimal spotting (now gone) and cramping, and said everything was fine.

At about midnight I noticed I was excreting a really watery substance, no smell, dries fairly tacky. I wiped it away and went back to bed. Same thing again at 5 A.M., and when I stood up both times there was no trickling etc. Baby has been active this morning and kicked away the doppler pretty fiercely, so I assume she's fine.

Is this normal discharge for this gestation? It was even thinner than my usual discharge, didn't smell like or look like urine (I went and peed after and there was a distinct difference), and didn't seem like sweat. I REALLY don't want to go back to L&D because with all my other issues I'm sure they think I'm nuts and just love the hospital anyway.

Any thoughts?
