I once left my purse in the shopping cart after loading my groceries into my car. I didn't realize it until I was almost to my brother's house. Luckily a really nice lady found it. She answered my phone when I went back to the store to see if someone turned it in. She was still shopping in the store so she just came to the front. I gave her a HUGE hug as major crisis averted. I tell this story only b/c she said she kept my purse as she didn't trust that the people working at the store would try to get this back to me or even try to steal from it as well.

That being said, I agree that he could have found your wallet after someone else took it so I would absolutely be cautious and make sure you monitor your credit reports for a long time. Also, there is this service called Lifelock that will help monitor your name and make sure that there is no fraud.

If he was going to steal your identity, I doubt he would have contacted you to give you back your wallet, honestly. It is possible though, that he wasn't the original stealer of the wallet, though, so next time, I'd carry that stuff on my person.

I've been a victim of identity theft, it invovled someone stealing my SSN and getting a bank loan and opening some credit cards, so from that standpoint, I would put fraud alerts on your credit bureau reports (assuming you have something similar).

@Mrs. Pen: It's Ontario's provincial insurance, I doubt they would release it but maybe! I think I wrongly assume I'm not traceable because I've not lived in Canada long. Obviously I'm a lot easier to find than I thought :)

@kjpugs: Thank you!

@SugarplumsMom: Ha ha, yes, Canadians do have that reputation :wink:

@babycanuck: No, thankfully my SIN wasn't. Then I would definitely have been worried.

@travelgirl1: Was your SIN card in there? If there is I'd be most concerned. Let me know because I did have my SIN card taken once and I had to flag a bunch of credit bureaus.

I don't think it's weird that he looked you up, I do think it's kind of odd that he took it to Montreal but I wouldn't worry too much.

Someone dropped their work ID near my house a few years back. We have a national registry (it's super easy to find ´personal info here) and I mailed it back to him. I don't think it's too weird for him to mail it back to you. I heard that Canadians are supposed to be super nice that way.

@travelgirl1: maybe when you get it back there will be something in there that has your address/phone on it that you totally forgot about! Who knows :) I hope the mystery is solved and that he is really just a nice guy!

I think it's great he tracked you down to return it... and like others said - in this day and age, it's so easy to find people's addresses... unless they have a terribly common name. Even so - if it had your medical card, he could have called you insurance company (not sure if that is legal though)... anyhow - I just think it's not too difficult. It is weird he took to back to montreal instead of handing it in at the aquarium.

@snowjewelz: Yeah that's a good idea!

@kjpugs: His call back number was a lighting company in Montreal. I did ask him, he said thought my health card, but when I got home and looked at DH's, address and phone number are not included. Hmmm.

I feel a bit more reassured since you guys think it's feasible for him to find that info easily. :happy:

@travelgirl1: did you ask him? I would straight up ask why the wallet got back to montreal with him, or how he got your address/# since it's not on the card with your name. I'd just have to phrase it nice like "wow! That's so great you got my address! How did you find it since it was not in my wallet?" Maybe he's a police officer or something haha. It would sketch me out a little too, but at least you're getting it back!

@travelgirl1: Good thing on your part to just do precautionary stuff though. Maybe you can put a freeze on your credit report for a while so no one can open any account in your name!

The only reason I can think of that he took it with him would be b/c the aquarium wouldn't go out of their way to find you but just wait for you to call them?

Once I found a girl's wallet on the street, I called the healthclub she belongs to (membership card inside) and ask them to call her and give her my # so she could contact me. I guess people can be pretty resourceful..

But why call you if he's gonna steal your identity? So confused! I mean, it's really nice that you'd get your stuff back!

@travelgirl1: I don't think it's unusual at all. I mean, if he were stealing your identity, why would he even try to find you to track you down? For what its worth, my DH found a large sum of money in a wallet with only a bank card with the person's name on it- and he was able to obtain his phone number to give it back. Now a days with the internet/etc, it's not too difficult to track someone down...

@pui: No, I don't drive here, my brain is wired to the other side of the road :wink: . Hmmm, I googled myself last night, there are articles I've written and my Linkedin. I have lived at my address for three years so not too long. It just puzzles me! I think if he was tying to fleece me he would have asked for money to send it back or something. I just have a suspicious mind.

I think it's fairly easy to find out a cell phone number from an address.

It's kind of weird that he took the wallet back with him, but maybe there is a good reason for that too.

If he was stealing your identity, why would he bother to mail the stuff back?

My wallet got lost/stolen (not sure which) from the stroller at the aquarium on Thursday. Yesterday, a man called from Montreal (we're in Toronto) saying he was at the aquarium on Thursday and found my wallet and would post it back with everything in it today.

At first I was just relieved. But now I'm very puzzled how he traced me and why he took the wallet to Montreal rather than just hand it in at the aquarium on the day. He says he got my phone number and address from my health card, but neither are displayed on it. I cancelled my financial cards and transferred points from loyalty cards already. My subway and aquarium passes are useless in Montreal. The contents are of no use to him, but DH thinks I need to be on my guard against stolen identity now. I am pretty good at tracing people (not in a creepy way, for work purposes) but didn't think my details were traceable from the contents of my wallet (address and phone). Facebook, LinkedIn profile etc, yes, but not my cell.

What do you think? Should I be worried? Is there anything I should do that I haven't already done?
