my doctor told me i could continue with yoga as long as *i* felt up for it. i did have to start modifying poses starting in my second trimester. i didn't do any of the poses requiring a "sit up" or much ab strength (e.g. push up type stuff) and i didn't do anything lying on my stomach after about 4-5 months.

@sslm: There are some great YouTube tutorials about how to modify a regular yoga practice at the different stages of pregnancy. During first tri, you don't have to modify very much (twist from your shoulders, not your belly; stay away from really deep convex or concave positions; listen to your body when it comes to ab work...). Definitely tell the instructor upfront and LISTEN TO YOUR BODY.

I couldn't do yoga through most of fist tri - putting my head below my center of gravity made me want to hurl, but am LOVING having it back in my life now. Just don't get too competitive with yourself and take child's pose whenever you feel like you need a break. I am going to start a prenatal practice soon, but plan on taking regular classes all the way through.

@chopsuey119: @Tidybee: Thanks!!!

@caffeinated: Thank you for weighing in :) I think I'll skip yoga for now. At least until my first midwife appointment! Walking and elliptical should be ok and I'm going to buy myself a pretty water bottle and lower the intensity!!!!

If you didn't do yoga before, I would do pre-natal classes instead. Not only should you stay away from deep twists but back bends, situps, and even shivasna (lying on your back in the second trimester). If you do decide to do a class, I would tell the instructor for sure.

Stick with the elliptical and walking! Just bring down the intensity a bit and make sure to stay well hydrated!

Yay! Congrats!! Yup I did regular yoga early on and had no issues from it. Do tell your instructor though. Mine modified some moves for me (for example you shouldn't do anything that requires twisting)

So I got my BFP this weekend! We're cautiously optimistic and just trying to take it one day at a time.

I'm wondering, is regular yoga ok for me to do? My gym offers regular yoga and I was thinking about just telling the instructor I'm pregnant and asking if I should modify anything. But, is that even necessary?
