@LCTBQE: haha really? I have a summer birthday and hated it as a kid, we were never in school and it was hard to keep in contact with people over break (this was well before social media and cell phones).

sorry for the thread jack, but i hated my summer birthday as a kid.

@mrsjd: @agold: my husband and I were also the youngest in our respective classes, and liked it, and I'm like mrsjd and the opposite of you, agold--I have a (probably pointless) attachment to the idea that our babe also be the youngest, so I'm hoping he comes right on time. I have friends all over the country whose school systems have different cutoff dates, though, and who knows where we'll be living, so I'm trying not to get attached to the idea right now. it does seem like either has advantages/disadvantages. but beyond school, having a late summer birthday is a lifetime of awesome no matter what :)

My DD is very late August bday and cutoff is 9/1. We put her in according to cut off. She is a 3rd grade now and is doing great. The only downside is that she is the last to do everthing. Last to lose teeth, birthday party to turn 8 does not even occur until the beginning of the next school year when everyone has already been 8 for months. But I don't regret it. It really does depend on the child.

I also wanted to echo that (if you end up needing to be induced) you likely won't have the baby the day of your induction. I actually don't know anyone who had their baby the same day they were induced. You could always request an evening induction (thats what they do here anyway.) My induction took 32 hours, so I definitely wouldn't have been a concern if in the same situation.

My LO is the youngest right now (Montessori preschool class, age 2.9 to 6 years). I love it. She just picks up so much from the older kids and is learning so quickly. However, once she starts K, she will be one of the oldest, since she has an early Oct birthday. I am bummed that she will have to wait the extra year to start public school. I was one of the oldest in my class and I was always bored, basically until high school. DH was one of the younger kids and his experience was better.

Also, my MIL is a teacher and she is actually concerned about our LO because she thinks it's crazy that LO will basically do 3 full years of pre-school before being allowed to start K. So in our case, I wish she could be one of the younger ones instead of one of the older ones. Agree with others that it totally depends on the child, though. My brother was one of the younger ones when he started K, and he ended up getting held back a year in 1st grade, and that was the right move for him.

@agold: I think it totally depends on the kid. I have a May birthday, so was average age, and loved it. One of my brothers has an October birthday, and it was good for him to be one of the older kids. My youngest brother has a July birthday, and did great as a younger kid in class. I think in his case it helped that he was already used to being around older kids. I think family dynamics can play a huge role in how ready kids are for school.

I have an early November birthday. I don't remember the exact cut off date but had to "test" into school because of my age. So I was almost always the youngest. TBH, I'd rather that than oldest.

My daughter is due September 9 (cut off is 8/31 here too) and both my husband and I are both kind of bummed. Both of us are among the youngest in our class and it's what we know. My husband worries about our girl being more mature and developing too early - with the unwanted attention that comes with that. I think he's overthinking that a bit.

ETA: A practical downside is that preschool is tuition based and you have to send your kid to private school here so $$$$$ for extra time.

@agold: There's no free public preK here unless you are under a certain income for four people, so we don't qualify for that and would have to pay tuition for the school year, plus find somewhere for her in the summer. It's not helpful to most working parents at all. Thankfully kindergarten is full-day here.

@LindsayLou: My husband was really old for our grade - held back because of sports, I think. He has mixed feelings about it. I never thought twice about being so young in school. My mom said I was mature enough. But I don't think college at 17 was best for me. It was a super fun but slightly rough year of dorm room binge drinking for me.

My daughter was due August 24th last year, and was born 3 days after her due date. If she'd been a week late, we would have likely induced. I can't say how I'll feel about her being the youngest in her class, since she's still so young. But we'll definitely discuss whether sending her immeadiately after she turns 5 or waiting a year is the best call for her. My husband has a September 5th birthday, so he was always the oldest, and liked it. My mom is a preschool teacher and has strong feelings about waiting until kids are ready. There are so many factors to consider.

@kodybear: Yes this for CA (re TK). You can also petition to have your younger child enrolled in Kindergarten, but I believe it varies by District whether they will allow it.

And my LO was born over 24 hours after scheduled induction date so you may end up with a September baby!

@avivoca: ha! I have actually totally thought about that, too. Even with the TK program at public school being free for those who don't meet the cutoff, the TK program I think is only half day. How does that help full time working parents? So that's one plus of having baby girl born before the cutoff.

Plus, my niece is one who doesn't meet the cutoff so she will be starting kinder late. If my girl starts "early", they will be able to be at the same elementary school together for a few years.

@agold: From a daycare standpoint, I really, really wish my kids were born before the cutoff (August 1). I'll be paying for six years of daycare for both of them, which is going to mean three years of double daycare payments (to the tune of $20k per year). I don't even live in a high COL area, so I can't imagine how much more it would be if I did.

Not my daughter, but I was always the youngest in my grade. I have a mid to late September birthday, and my mom sent me to private school when I was little because their cutoff was later than public school. She knew I was ready and didn't want to make me wait that extra year. It never really affected me much. (Other than having to see my parking space sit empty for the first month of my junior year - that was torture  )

I think I'd wait until your child is older and see if you think she's ready for school.

PS. I also had a LONG induction - went to the hospital Wednesday morning; baby was born Saturday morning. You never know how it's going to go. :)

my son was born a month before the cutoff, and we will send him to kindergarten as the youngest. he is advanced for his age and has been thriving as the youngest in his class. he definitely needs to be challenged or else he gets bored and causes trouble. ;-)

I'm guessing you are in CA since you mentioned TK. In our school district, even if your child is born before the cutoff, i think its somewhere between June - Sept, you can still get on the waitlist for TK, even tho TK is usually for Sept-Dec babies. So i think its possible to "redshirt" your child if you feel its necessary by sendign them to TK first, even if they meet the cutoff. So thats always an option as well!

Mine will probably be one of the youngest if we don't hold him back a year (we still have a while to decide, and if we do it'll be based on some behavior issues he's having right now).

Both DH and a BIL were Aug babies, and one ended up being the youngest in the class and the other the oldest. My MIL held the latter back because she felt he just wasn't ready for Kinder. The one was who was the youngest is (and has always been) wildly popular, very charming, very smart and successful. The one who was held back is all of those things (not quite as successful or charming, though, but that's just his personality).

I don't think being a young girl matters nearly as much as being a young boy (for some). Girls typically develop socially earlier, plus maturing physically later isn't generally viewed as a bad thing or disadvantage. I know of more boys who just aren't ready to start K socially....and physically developing later can put them at a disadvantage if they are interested in sports (or girls...haha). I'd just take it as it comes, though, and evaluate whatever seems right for you & your kid, either way! Usually that close to the cut-off you could start early if you wanted to, too....

I was always the youngest in my class (missed the cutoff and my parents pushed for me to be tested and admitted early). Certain aspects of it frankly sucked, like not being able to drive until later than everyone, turning 21 later than peers, etc. But socially and academically it wasn't an issue. In high school my friends were mostly a grade ahead (so two years older) so it really wasn't a factor at all. But you'll be better equipped to make any decisions once LO is here and you know his/her personality and maturity at that time.

Fyi, my first induction I went in the evening of the 9th, labored all day the 10th and she wasn't born until 1 am on the 11th. So I wouldn't worry too much about the 31st actually being the birthday.

Since all of my kids are August, they will all be the youngest in their K class. Unless we see some reason they aren't ready, we will go ahead and send them. Maybe just get familiar with the option for "red shirting". Honestly, I dont see a big difference between an August 1 birthday, an August 15th birthday and an August 31st birthday. At some point you just have to make the call with whats right for your child.
