While she's an infant/toddler, the daycare we chose leans more toward nurturing the children. As she gets closer to preschool age, we might switch her to a more educational or Montessori/Waldorf based program.

Ours is more educational, but not in an aggressive manner. I heard that recently when they had a graduation ceremony for the 3 and 4 year olds, each child could stand up in front of all the parents and say+ spell their name, address and other information. They also learn a lot of numbers, shapes, colors, etc...

I would say that our new school places slightly more emphasis on nurturing over education. But we did pick this daycare has a very good curriculum. We may change him to montessori once he is older though. LO is only 14 months old.

I believe that there are concrete and abstract things that kids can learn and as long as it's age appropriate, I am okay with an educational approach.

For example, my son can recognize his numbers, but he doesn't get what the number itself represents yet and I am okay with this. He's 2.5. There is plenty of time for that when he's a little older.

Like @Mrs. Jacks: our son goes to a Montessori school. He's 10 months, but he'll get both nurturing and education.

I've worked in several different preschools/daycares and I think the best ones have a healthy balance. But fostering social & emotional growth would trump academics for me.

We don't do daycare, but Montessori is very balanced in its approach to nurturing the child and fostering self directed learning. We also have a nanny and she's very nurturing and spends a fair amount of time on lessons.

Montessori won't be working on reading or anything but now that Lala is doing some reading her own, they will help her build those skills if that's what she's showing interest in at the time.

I am absolutely all for nurture-based child care. I am now a SAHM, but before that we had our daughter in a very child-led, play-focussed centre. And then we switched to a similar preschool. I am going to support my children in every way possible as they move through their education, but I believe that these early years are for learning-through-play and exploration.

Though to be honest, lots of our days at home are all about survival! :P

I think especially before K/1 nurturing is a vital part of educating. Social and emotional growth in the early years are important to academic success later on.

Definitely nurturing as she's only 8 months old. But starting around 2 they really focus on education. Heck, she'll have spanish class once a week!

I'm her childcare :) I focus on nurturing, but I feel like at this age (2) it's important to learn through play. She actually does learn a lot, I'm always surprised when she says something new that she's learned. Like a few months ago she randomly counted to 10. Who knew that she actually listens to me when I count?

Since my "daycare" is going to be 1st grade, I'll say they're more focused on education.

He's always been to more education focused schools, though, even in preschool. He never just went to daycare.

I would say both. LO is so loved at her daycare and she learns a ton. She is 20 months and has been at the same center since she was 5 months. She is learning signs, colors, animal sounds, and lots of social emotional skills as well. It has been a really good fit for us and her!

@mrbee: I think ours kind of shifts focus, like yours does. Granted, D is only 7 months old right now, but for now they are focusing on providing a safe, loving place for him (while helping to develop his milestones). As they get older, they start focusing more on education - teaching shapes, counting, letters, even Spanish! We love it.

We have a private sitter (she asked to not be called a nanny) and her focus is definitely nurturing. DD is 3 years old and will be starting pre-school two days a week next week. DS is 11 months tomorrow.

We are also in home and it's nurturing rather than education. I sometimes wonder when she's older if this will bug me, but we LOVE our daycare provider & I can't imagine pulling her to send her to a more education based center. We will really just work on learning at home I think.

We go to an in-home daycare with only 8 kids of varying ages (3mos - 5yrs). My DS is almost 2. She definitely provides a nurturing environment. She focuses on things like manners, sharing, nice play with older/younger children, etc. There is some education but that's not the focus and I'm 100% ok with that.

Education and nurturing, not just "watching kids". Everything has an educational lesson: they talk about which colors make other colors while painting, how the paint feels on fingers, what the colors remind them of (blue like the sky, brown like a cow, etc.). Each week there is a new ciriculam, with focuses on specific books, math/science, art, etc.

Our current day care center is really great… they focus on loving our kids and providing them with a safe fun place to spend each day. They do lots of activities: painting, drawing, and reading books… and they also help the kids learn the alphabets and their numbers. But the focus is more on nurturing then on educating.

As the kids get older though, childcare centers seem to shift in focus. We visited a friend's daycare the other day and the focus was much more on education. I was really impressed, but at the same time I can't help but think of how my own upbringing did not have nearly this much educational focus. No wonder so many kids are so advanced by the time they start kindergarten!

Is your childcare more focused on education or nurturing? How old is your child?
