Walking distance to home. I love that I can park my car and grab the stroller to go pick up the kids. During the warmer months we often end up at the park. I also love that LO has friends in the neighborhood. She'll go to school with these kids in elementary. We often run into daycare friends around town which is nice since we don't know anybody else in the area.

I can't picture spending 90min a day in my cars with LOs. Plus DH wouldn't be able to help out.

Ours is half a mile from home. I love how close it is.

His old daycare was about 5 miles away but it could take us up to 25 minutes to get there with traffic. And it was the opposite direction from my work (which really sucked commute wise).

Close to DH's work, which works out well but it's definitely a temporary solution for us. Whenever DH is too sick to go to work, LO has to stay home since there's no way to get her to daycare. Would not have been a problem in the past since we rarely ever had to take sick days, but since LO has been in daycare we've been laid out with sinus infections, ear infections, pinkeye.... hooray for the Catch-22 there. It's not great, and also DH prefers to take the bus to work anyway so he can sleep, rather than having to drive all that way. So we are eagerly awaiting our spot coming available in our neighborhood daycare only a few blocks from our house.

Our old daycare was closer to work and meant DS had to go with me everywhere or I had to drive out of the way to take him home first.

It's basically around the corner, literally 2-3 minutes away. I LOVE it. We used to go to one that was about half way between home and work and this is so much better.

It's so much easier to share pickup/drop off, it's easier if one of us is sick, or if daycare is open and work is closed. So, so much better that being near work.

My girls are three and five now, so I think age makes a difference and they don't really realize that you're gone a little longer. If they were smaller, I can definitely see how having them closer would make me feel better.

Both. About 10 min walk from home and about 15 min walk from my work. Plus it's basically right on the way for me when I walk to work. This was super important to us since I walk to work and didn't want to add too much more time onto my commute. We are lucky that we actually had a couple options right on my route.

2 miles from home. i love it! esp since i work at home a couple days a week. but even without that, when we lived a bit farther during our transition between houses, having to commute (30 min) with 2 tired kids after daycare was the worst. one or both were crying. we only had to do that for 2 weeks but it was the longest 2 weeks

Close to home for multiple reasons:

1 - DH and I share drop-off/pick-up so that we can be flexible with each others' schedules
2 - I don't want them in the car that long, especially now that they're older
3 - when one is sick, it's quick for me to drop the other off at daycare
4 - also for when I'm sick and still need to drop them off
5 - when I'm randomly off work and still take them to daycare

Ours is about 10 mins away from our house, slightly out of my way to work but still convent. It's very close to the park and ride that my husband uses. I do drop off and Dh does pick up. I think closer to home is nice because unless both partners work close to each other, having it near one persons work could be very inconvenient for the other person.

@teresajdb: Yea I think you're right that it will be way better to have her close to home. I just don't love to think of the number of hours she'll end up there. I also think as she gets older I'll probably get more of a sense from her of having fun and loving being there so that will help!

And I feel you on the meltdowns, I'm pretty jealous of my husband's commute knowing he never has to listen to a crying baby half the way :silly:

Ugh, neither?

Its like equidistant from our house and my job but not on the way to either. Its sorta on the way home for DH on the days he commutes.

It was the only place we could get in, so it is what it is! Luckily DH does pick-up and drop-off on days he works from home so its not awful for me, but I did have to adjust my work hours one day a week to be able to get DS to daycare without waking him up so early in the morning.

@petitenoisette: I switched daycares recently because it just became too much to commute with them everyday. I commute about 40 minutes one way and I was bringing both my kids with me to a place close to work. My younger daughter would often a have a meltdown half way through the commute and it would just lead to everyone starting off the night together poorly. Also, I was the one who was solely responsible for drop off and pick ups. My husband would do them if I needed to but it was out of the way.
Now that we've switched to a center closer to home, it's so much better. They spend a little more time there everyday, but it's less stressful, they get more time with dad, and as bonus my older daughter can continue after school care there once she starts kindergarten in the fall.

@mediagirl: so crazy! did it actually take 18 months? I'm hoping it might not be quite that long because it's free to get on the waitlist, so maybe everyone just puts their kid on just in case? But obviously we'll need backup. I guess I should have signed up for daycare six months BEFORE getting pregnant :meh:
