For us it was worth it because it was leagues nicer than every other daycare I looked at; there was no comparison so the drive was just a have-to-deal situation. If you really like it more than the others, your peace of mind will be worth the additional commute. If the daycares are all pretty even…then it’s a tougher choice!! I staff clinics and hospitals in some pretty unsavory areas most of the time. It was a great center, but a spot opened up on one that's right on my way home from work. Ours is on my way to/from work. There is one I liked but it's about 15 minutes out of the way without traffic, so I think a lot of days I'd be cutting it really close getting there on time. I do drop off and DH does pick up. The only time I hate it is when DH gets stuck at work and I have to pick him up. I commute about 40 minutes away and sometimes it can take me an hour and a half to get to daycare in the evening commute. Luckily my job is pretty flexible so I can leave early and make up the time later on those days. My daycare is about a 5-min. drive from home on the way to work. If it were 10-15 min. in the other direction, I would probably have still picked it because it is THAT great. Over. 15 min., not sure. And we only need care from 2:00 p.m. until I'm off work, so maybe this won't be too bad. FIL has offered to go pick him up for me and meet me at home on some of the days we need daycare, so that also helps. Ours our daycare is about 15-20 minutes away {in the opposite direction for DH and a giant u-turn for me}. The location isn't ideal, but the daycare is, so we make it work. A year in, it's not a big deal anymore. I have issues with it. I like our daycare and think LO is well cared for. It is less expensive than daycares closer to our home, but it takes me about 30 min. to get home from daycare (during rush hour). The problem is that LO is usually ready for dinner and is screaming the whole way home, which stresses me out. Then I have to run in the door and hurry to find something to feed him! It wasn't a problem when he was younger and took bottles, but now that he is 16 mo, it has really become an issue. We are seeking another option at this point. What is there is traffic? Accident? Is your work going to care if you are late? 20 mins is a lot when you are already running late. I'm pretty spoiled by our in-home being in our subdivision, 0.3 miles away. But the other daycare we looked at was on the way for me, out of the way for DH. Probably not by 20 min, though....we did look at some that were out of the way, but didn't like them enough to heavily consider them I'd probably look around, and if it was still the very best option, I'd get over it. There were several other centers (at least 4 that I can think of off the top of my head) that were closer, but we chose this one anyway. It takes about 20 minutes for me to get there in the morning--in almost the opposite direction of my office--but it only takes about 15-20 minutes to get LO home when I pick her up. The only problem is that its kind of out of the way for us. We would both have to drive in the opposite direction from work/home to get him there and back every day. BUT there are so many positives for us - she is licensed, very selective about how many children she takes, she is well-versed in AP (not a big deal, but a bonus), has tons of experience with BLW, and comes highly recommended by our LC and pediatrician. The only drawback is location. Do you or would you drive out of the way for a daycare you like?
