@boiledpnut: Yeah, she's very insecure and gets frustrated when she can't control the situation, which I think plays into the barking sometimes. On the plus side, I highly doubt anyone could ever sneak up on us/break into our house, because they're always on high alert!

@Happygal: She might be singing! I had a golden retriever that howled at sirens and the vet said she was just singing along.

Our Pomeranian barks sometimes. Luckily her bark isn't annoying. But sometimes she will get started and its so hard to shut her up! Our doodle only barks when playing or if someone is at the door. He cries a lot though when company leaves! It's so cute.

@StrawberryBee: aww! I have an American Eskimo Spitz! Such pretty dogs. I think barking is common in the spitzes, unfortunately!

She barks when someone comes towards the home or something else alerts her. Gets all hackled up, too. I say thanks, and sometimes indulge her by doing a perimeter check with her. She's a German Shepherd, and she takes her "job" very seriously!

I also found out through an unfortunate dinner making experience that she'll howl when the smoke alarm goes off.

Our dogs bark only when something is outside, like a neighbor walking, or someone coming to the house. I just pat their heads and say thanks for letting me know and they seem satisfied with that, lol

Yes; surprisingly, our sheltie is the quietest of the three. My spitz is fairly reactive to outside sounds, and sets the bichon/yorkie off. Spitz and Sheltie have 'off' buttons; the bichon/yorkie doesn't. Sometimes 'shhhing' them works, sometimes raising my voice into a very stern tone shuts it off. If someone knocks on the door? yeah, that's not getting turned off for a while. Should be interesting when LO gets here!

Ugh, YES. He barks when he sees/hears people that aren't us. It usually scares people who don't know him, but then the second they are in the house or his vicinity he's super excited and falls on his back wanting belly rubs and is all kissing and love.

We're working on the barking, but DH wonders if it isn't a good thing that he warns us. Problem is, he warns us when he sees people in their own yard doing their own thing!

Nope, I think that's partially because she's pretty deaf and can't hear things to bark at! She will bark a few times if she sees a stranger in the house, but that's it.

Our dog will bark, just 3-4x, whenever he hears the door open. He's our doorbell! Otherwise, he's a quiet guy.

My dog very rarely barks. Maybe when we come home she'll let out a bark. She does howl though.... but only when we leave her alone. She also howls when DH leaves (such a daddy's girl!) so I had to start taking her for a walk in the morning so she doesn't realize he's leaving because she was waking LO up.
