Oh yes! People rarely get out of their vehicle because of him. Especially if I am home alone, he makes sure he is on guard and always between me and the other person.

@T.H.O.U.: She's a Bouvier :) She's upstairs making this weird talking-growling noise right now and I'm assuming that the mail lady is at the door. Sigh.

I LOVE boxers! I think a boxer is next on my list.

@MrsCB: Oh God, the doorbell. Our crazy dogs bark when they hear a doorbell on a commercial even! The first thing DH did when we brought baby home from the hospital was disconnect the doorbell!

My dog is definitely not a good watch dog! I have a very passive Golden Retriever who hardly ever barks. DH and I often joke that if someone was breaking in, our dog would be right there to welcome them.

Definitely not a good watch dog, she doesn't bark. Though I am quite confident that if we needed protection she would step up, she definitely has a protective personality.

In some ways. I'm sure people can hear her 2 towns away...she barks at everything. A leaf floating through the air? bark. The neighbor getting their mail? bark. A car door closing? bark. Someone coming and knocking on the door? All hell breaks loose! But the problem is, once the person is inside, it doesn't matter who it is, she will lick you to death. Everyone is a friend. So we would definitely know if there was someone trying to sneak into our house, but she'd probably become their new best friend instead of attacking.

I kind of prefer my dogs not to bark as much as possible. My old dog almost never barked, only when he was very agitated (like when there was a thunderstorm). My new dog barks more often (usually during play) but so far has not barked when someone came to the door or passed our house.

No. She would growl then bark her head off when someone comes up the stairs to our apt but that's it. There has been times though that she won't hear them and won't bark.

I don't know if I would rely on her to protect our house.

Though looking at everyone's responses I guess she's more protective than other dogs here.

I am afraid that she'll bark her head off but once the intruder gets inside, she be under the bed hiding. Or after a few minutes, she'll be licking them, waiting for a treat and showing them where we put our valuables.

We have taken her with us on weekend trips so she'll stay with us in the hotel and she will bark at everyone passing our room. I'll wake up at least 5 times throughout the night trying to get her to stop growling and barking. If I catch her at the growl stage, I can usually prevent her from barking.

Oh yes! He's a chocolate lab/blue heeler, so everyone thinks he's very lovable and cuddly. But really, he was a farm dog before we got him, and he was used to protecting the farm animals! His mom was just starting to teach the pups!

So he has a very vicious growl/snarl when anything walks past our house. Especially if he's outside in the yard.....oh man....Sometimes I worry our fence won't hold up! Actually he has pushed through and broken the fence once so far, but we reinforced it. Once he knows the person, and sees us talking to them he will generally stop and then he will be friendly.

@spaniellove: Oh that sucks, lol. I think most people won't even realize the doorbell's not working. UPS will just ring once and drop the package. Door to door sellers of things can kiss my butt, and I'll make DH keep an eye out for food delivery.

Oh yes, she will bark if she sees or hears anything in the neighborhood. Whether she'd actually protect us is another story, since everyone who walks in goes crazy over her cuteness.

@MrsCB: I wish disconnecting the doorbell would solve our issues - people around here just bang on the door!

She's 100 pounds and has a MEAN growl, so absolutely. Some of the neighbours that haven't met her have asked me if she's friendly, because she doesn't sound like she is.

In reality, she's a teddy bear. Once she sees that I'm ok with the person coming in the house, she loves everyone. It's awesome because it really is the best of both worlds.

Unfortunately, yes. She drives me crazy by growling at everyone who passes by our house. And she barks like mad if the doorbell rings or if someone she doesn't know comes in the house. But then after she barks at them she wants to be petted, lol.

I told DH we're disconnecting the doorbell when we're home after the baby's here.

Yes. I had my dog when I lived alone in grad school. I trained him to bark if he heard weird noises outside or someone approaching the door. Once someone is inside or he sees that I am ok with them then he turns friendly. He's got a big bark but no bite.

One of mine is a good alert dog. She will bark, run at the door, and throw herself up to get to the person on the other side, which usually scares the crap out of them (people have literally hid around the corner) but she is only excited to have people so she can get petted. The other dog is very skittish and will run and hide. Now that we have C she'll let out one bark and then would guard C when he was an infant but now that he's mobile she has gone back to hiding but still gives one bark.

@MrsTiz: My dog is sweet as can be, but when someone comes in the house she will bark and growl at them. They think she's being mean.... but it's actually a friendly growl saying, "pet me please! Rub my belly.... now!" My last dog would just give them tons of kisses.

My last dog was not. The UPS guy would come and knock on the door and my dog would just lay there, looking at him through the window that's right next to the door.

My new pup is a much better watch dog. She'll bark, howl, and growl if she sees someone coming. Which is good and bad when you have a baby.....
