Rates are going up this year because many companies finally have to switch to ACA compliant plans. ACA is effective beginning 2015, many companies changed their open enrollment period to November, so that they could delay the 2015 implementation by 11 months.

I just found out today that our employer will no longer be funding anything towards our HSA (they funded $6500 in 2015). Our high deductible health plan has a OOP max of $12,000. We are trying to get pregnant, so were looking at a $12,000 bill coming our way.

Thanks Obama.

@Smurfette: @mrskc: As I understand it, the Cadillac Tax would require employers who provide high-end benefits to pay additional tax. So the way my HR person made it sound, to avoid having to pay that tax, my employer is just making benefits worse. I think that's where the idea of "punishment" comes in -- the fact that employers are being taxed if they provide good benefits, which seems like it just gives employers incentive to make them worse.

ETA: there's a lot of talk about repealing it. Though if a lot of companies are making changes to anticipate it now, I feel like it would be too late. http://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/259727-talk-grows-of-repealing-obamacare-cadillac-tax

@mrskc: I think this day and age, it would be weird for your rates to not go up. Or stays the same and benefits are down. Stinks but it could always be worse.

@MrsSCB: I mean.. i work for the health insurance company that gives us our health insurance.... they're REALLY good to their employees so I definitely don't think - rather I know - that increase premiums isn't about their financial standing. It's more money THEY have to pay to the government. That isn't always the case for every employer, but I know for us, the % of the premium they are covering hasn't changed. Just the cost of the premium itself has. It is a bummer, but they give us a good plan (i just changed jobs partially FOR the health insurance plan) so I won't complain!

I was pissed because DH's employer doubled our costs. But looking at what everyone pays I guess I should be happy with $134/paycheck for family coverage. Still annoyed though, since it used to be $60.

@Smurfette: My deductible is also $3k. I pay, for family coverage, $1k a month (my employer covers a good bit of the premium, but not all of it). And of course that's in addition to all co-pays.

Eta: That said, I appreciate having multiple treatment/provider options.

@mrskc: Your deductible is only $300 for the year? and you pay nothing out of pocket? Mine is $3K plus $60 every two weeks for my portion. This is just for LO and me. DH has to be on his work plan, mine won't cover him since he has it offered through work.

@Miss Ariel: @mrskc: Yeah, someone in HR told me the reason they were changing was the Cadillac tax but it's probably just a convenient excuse. I'm pretty annoyed with my company, because I know we spend so much money on frivolous things and I feel like they're basically passing this tax onto the employees :-/ We're also switching insurance providers entirely, which is frustrating. And our deductible is going from $250 to $750. Yuck.

We are all on dh's insurance and we pay nothing out of pocket for it. But our plan keeps getting worse every year. Co pays, deductible and max out of pocket have all tripled.

I feel like this ACA is a joke. My brother makes $10/hour. He recently moved in with his gf and her daughter and is supporting them. They can't afford the $50/ month for Kaiser for him. But unless he wants to be fined on his taxes had to sign up for health insurance. So now he pays $10 (I think? Can't remember exact number) a month for Obama care and all he gets is free screenings. What a joke.

@MrsSCB: ugh this is happening to us the last 2 years!! While we do have amazing insurance everything has gone up triple. So $10 co pays are now $30 and duductible went from $100 to $300. We now have a prescription deductible that I've never even heard of before. It's making mad! Why are we being punished for having good insurance. While I know $300 deductible is amazing to some people, I'm just not used to budgeting so much towards medical stuff.

@MrsSCB: technically the caddilac text doesn't go into effect until 2018, but that doesn't stop your company from changing plans to prepare for it. Although there's talk about getting ride of it. But the tax is supposed to be a way of finding aca and maybe lead to lower premiums overall?

@mediagirl: I do know one girl who has insurance through the affordable care act and it seems to be very affordable to her. She goes to therapy regularly and gets prescriptions and pays about $2.00 for each. But she's a single mom with no job. So it might be affordable for people with no jobs.

@mediagirl: unfortunately there's no actual plan through his firm because it's so small. Taking the stipend, which would *maybe* cover insurance for a single person, is the only option. And I work part-time, so no insurance here either. I'm actually trying to find a full time job right now and a big reason is because we really need the benefits.

We have Tricare since DH is retired military, and we don't pay for it. But DH's company health care went up this year (we opt out). And their coverage is awful. DH wasn't allowed to opt out at his last job, so we had double coverage and never paid anything. This year we went to just Tri-care a month before LO2 was born, and we ended up paying quite a bit.

Amazingly, yes! And our plan is a little better also (lower deductibles, Out of Pocket, co-pays, etc.). Our firm sends out quarterly employee surveys to the firm and 80% of the responders said they were unhappy with our current insurance benefits. Management took this into consideration and adjusted our plan for 2016.

No. I work for a hospital that's self funded. It's so amazing, I don't think I'll ever leave just because of the insurance. I have 0 deductible or copays as long as I use our docs and facilities. (There's a $100 copay for
Hospital admission but that's it!) Even if we don't, its still minimal cost. I pay <$150 a month for our family. My old employer I paid over $500 a month for us (and my portion was covered by my employer 100%!) and that was a $4000 deductible plan!
