Ours is average for our area but larger than our friends. The only way we were able to afford it was because we bought our previous house at the bottom and it had gained a lot of value over the last couple years. So we were lucky. Otherwise we would've been in our other house (1000sqft smaller) for a longer time.

A lot of people live in apartments where I am. It is kind of a hot thing here right now, luxury apartments. SO much less worries! High rises are popping up and cost more than homes! It is also pretty common for people to live in any type of apartment here, not just the new lovely ones. Most are 700-1000sf. Big homes aren't a thing here, unless you live in suburbs... and I don't know anyone that does! Or unless you live in the large expensive homes by the Uni... my doctor does... but a 1000sf home in my neighborhood is 300,000, I can't imagine wanting to spend more than that here, personally.

Ours is average for our area and peer group. Real estate in our neighborhood has exploded in the last few years so I feel we are lucky to own a 3 BR/2.5-bath house here, where it's getting where the average dwelling is an apartment-style condo for the price we paid for a townhouse with yard.

It depends on the friends. Our house is larger than most homes are friends have in our home town. But here, it's probably slightly smaller? Another factor is that we are on an acre slightly farther out from town. We have more land than house.

@birdofafeather: not really opposite, just not close to beach, close to downtown. We're walking distance from the heart of the city. The folks with bigger houses that are as close as we are spend around $3-4 million but there is a lot of smaller older housing stock that is close in, just small and generally not in great shape or recently flipped.

@bushelandapeck: 1770! That's awesome. And I'm sure a lot of work!

@erinpye: I'm really just guessing based on feel, so it's not exact!

@Bao: that makes sense!

@oliviaoblivia: in our old city, almost everyone rented small places because it was so expensive to live there. Anyone that owned, it was a condo or townhome. And yeah, when we buy, we'll pick a smaller, older home in a more desirable part of town for us versus new, bigger and further from the beach! So the opposite of your city! Ha.

@birdofafeather: I feel like our house is on the smaller side. Its a raised bungalow and about 1100 sqf. We do however have a full unfinished basement, and have plans for an extension off of the kitchen/dining room (our kitchen, dining and living room is all open concept).
Once the basement is finished and the extension is on we'll be on the larger side.

I'd say average for the area and in my group of friends. Yes, there are giant houses in other neighborhoods close by but there are also smaller ones. Same goes for my group of friends - some people have larger homes and others have smaller but we're pretty much right in the middle where most everyone else is size wise

Very few of our friends own. Houses start around a million here so it's very hard to get into the market.
Of those that own ours is the biggest, but it's still only about 1,600sf. We bought a bigger house in as-in condition and have renovated, most of our friends bought move-in condition which means much less house for more money.
That's the price for our great location though.

Our apt is bigger than most of our friends who live in the city (our closest friends in our city are single and either have 1 bedrooms or roommates) but smaller than our friends' who live in the suburbs nearby and have houses. We are so jealous of those houses, lol...

Larger since it's in the burbs. When we were city condo living, it was about average with our friends in condos. Comparing against friends who bought homes in the city, it's bigger than a Chicago bungalow.

I'd say ours is about average for the neighborhood and among our friends (1900 sqft). I live in a pretty rural area, and many houses are around the same size with the difference being in year it was built and amount of land.

Mayyyyybe ever so slightly larger than "average" for our town, but definitely average for our friends. Having said that, our town is an urban walking city where everyone lives in apartment/condo buildings unless they own a Brownstone (none of my close friends do because they are 2+million dollars these days). SO our place is just under 1300 sq feet and it's not considered small at all in our town.

Little larger! We were young and pretty lucky when we purchased our home in 2009! DH had a settlement from a childhood accident and with the Obama FTHB credit it was a no brainer!!

We were 23 and 24 engaged and for our area that is pretty young!

I would say ours is larger then many of our friends, but small for our area. We live in a really nice neighborhood with tons of ridiculously huge homes, and ours is quite modest in comparison. :) But most of my friends live in smaller places. We have more space than we need, this place was just a good deal because it's a duplex (shared wall with another home).

We have 2600 sq ft. We seem to have the largest home of those that own vs rent houses that I have seen, but entertaining in someone's home is not the norm here. Some of our friends still rent apartments too. Our friends don't necessarily live near us either- take a hour in either direction and you'll find a pal. Once we start having play dates at home I will be a better judge as to how our home compares with others in our actual area and perhaps age.
