@wonderstruck: Here in the UK, the window cleaner is usually a local bloke with a ladder, a bucket and a squeegee. Our window cleaner has been cleaning windows in my area for 35 years and everyone knows him. He goes round to any new residents and asks if they want their windows cleaning fortnightly for a set price - ours is £4.50 per time. He then comes once a fortnight (while most people are at work), slams his ladder up against the wall and sets to work cleaning the windows. He then comes round every month or so, on a Saturday, to collect the money. This continues until you ask ask him to stop doing it. You never know when he is going to come (its not always the same day never mind a set time), which is why I have flashed him TWICE in 18 months!! He just appears at your bedroom window!! lol.

That's what the famous George Formby song is about:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dG1W1h5W17Y

Yay for Voldemort references :) And the British tone always amuses me too. I'm going to start using the word bloody when I'm pissed off.

Sorry you have so much noise disturbing nap time! I was baffled by the window washer thing...I don't know how that works, is it a British thing? I mean, I've seen window washers in the city, but never just cleaning houses wherever unless he was hired by the homeowner, who would set a date and time.

Our street is pretty quiet during the day except for when it's summer vacation, since there's lots of families with kids in our subdivision. But there is one day a month that they test our county's emergency sirens like a half hour into nap time, and that is super annoying.

@mrs. wagon: Wicked pissah??? Eh?? It that what you call someone who urinates in a particularly evil way?? As in "Have you invited Voldemort to your dinner party? He always brings dessert but you must remember to take your bath mats up - he's a wicked pissah, he doesn't even try to aim"

@illumina: Ha! I do love a rant. My husband has learned to tune me out. What can I say, I'm a woman of many, many words! It get's worse the more wine I consume, too....

@mrs. wagon: That sounds completely awful!!! We had to stay in London for a few nights when BIL got married and we were on a busy street - I could not sleep at all, all night. The traffic noise was horrendous!

I've just read my post back.... I do sound very English and very posh when I'm angry!!! Oh dear!

@Cherrybee: OK I just have to say.. I'm American and I love British accents, humor, etc and reading your posts is sooooo awesome. Even when you're all pissed off! Hehe.

We live on a main road, and there is a traffic light right in front of our house. So we get all kinds of motorcycles and trucks that rattle our house as they go by. And we also hear them idling at the red light. And in the summer we hear everyone's music. Those cars with the super bass sound systems? Sean Paul bass lines literally shaking my insides to their catchy tunes. Not fun. Especially with a napping baby!!

I hate the location but it's a rental and we don't want to move to another rental before we buy. And our kids are finally now old enough to sleep thru the noise. And truth be told, it's much better in the winter when the motorcycles are put away for the season and everyone has their windows rolled up. But when springtime comes I always want to move right away!!

@Cherrybee: our place is SO loud, night and day. Which is odd, because we live on a fairly unpopulated street (for this extremely overpopulated area I mean). But there's a nail salon directly below me and a Dunkin Donuts on the corner so people ate notorious for standing outside both and talking loudly or tying their dogs up there while they go in, leaving them to bark repeatedly outside our windows.

Then there's the construction across the street, which means a never ending supply if jack hammering, pounding, and god knows what else. And then my favorite--- the never ending parade of huge trucks taking supplies to and from the construction site, trying to fit down our extremely crowded marrow streets, so they constantly have to back up and adjust, which causes that loud BEEP BEEP BEEP BEEP at all hours of the day and night.

And if all that isn't enough, we have a daycare half a block away that takes different groups on a walk all day, and the teachers lead the kids in very loud songs as they walk. We have two white noise machines positioned about a foot from LOs head and she still gets woken up a lot :(

@Cherrybee: how loud do you have the white noise? I can hear mine through the door several feet away.

My apt is ok for sleep. C's room is next to a stair way though and I can hear people thumping up an down then. I don't think they have ever woken her though. My neighbors dog barks all the time but C's window is the furthest from it. And it's a big building so no one knocking on our door luckily.

I'm in a very quiet neighborhood. The only thing that gets loud is DH when he gets excited when he's talking. I'll have to get him to can it when LO comes. DS can sleep right through his talking, though. DH gets up at 4:30 am for work and he'll come in and talk to me (ugh).

But, during the day, this house is very peaceful...every single one of our pets will happily nap with me when I need to rest. :)

We lived on a super quiet street/cul de sac when my son was small...the mailboxes were down the driveway, so we were hardly ever disturbed. He got very used to sleeping in quiet surroundings, but he's also done well in louder settings, like my parents home.

@Cherrybee: I put up a very large sign on our door, lol. Leave packages at door, don't ring the bell or knock unless you absolutely have to & do it softly, no religious propaganda...I have found Jesus & love my church, no soliciting of any kind...I don't need meat, pizza menus, magazines or lower electricity rates. I have added that if you're selling cookies then you can knock, lol. It has worked very well. I have watched people come to the door and read the sign and then quietly turn around. Sleep makes my life better & if you wake up my child cause you came to leave a stupid flyer about your new pizza menu, I may hurt you. I think the neighbors may be scared. LOL.

In theory, our apartment is great for naps, but there has been construction directly across the street for months now. Luckily, DS naps at school and not at home. At night it is deadly quiet. Neither of us have had a landline phone in years. I always turn my phone to silent when DS is napping at home.

I'm not amused right now! I had got LO down for what promised to be an excellent morning nap and then the bloody window cleaner turned up, slamming his ladder against the front of the house, thump thump thumping up to DD's window and slam, starts noisily cleaning it. AGH!

Every.single.time I get the child to sleep, something bloody well wakes her up!

If it's not the window cleaner, its the post man. Here in the UK, we don't have "mailboxes", we have "letter boxes" which are, essentially, holes in our front doors, covered with a metal flap (which also acts as a door knocker). So every time the postman comes, your door knocks loudly (he doesn't care!) and the letters/packages THUD onto your hall floor. And it's not just the postman - pizza leaflets, free newspapers, those bloody charity bags! Do you get them? Bin liner sized bags in little packets from various charities, requesting that you fill the bag with unwanted clothes and leave it on the street to be collected. I have had FOUR this week! Slam! Plus, I seem to be the entire street's parcel drop off point. I have taken parcels for three different addresses in the last week. It's getting beyond a joke.

If it isn't the window cleaner or the postman, it's Johnny! Johnny, ugh! My gobshite of a neighbour who is everyone's best friend, pulling up to his house ten times a day (why doesn't he work??) with his car stereo booming, yelling "alright mate" and "alright love" at anyone who happens to be in the vicinity. I swear to god I'm going to march out there one day and take his face off!

Please tell me I'm not the only one who lives in Disney World on flipping parade day!
