I think it just comes naturally by not getting them things right when they ask (unless you are able to). With our 3 year old, she's alllll about instant gratification. I'm having to be really intentional about explaining "being patient" if I can't get to her right away. I always tell her what to expect, like: "I hear you want some water. I'll get you a cup as soon as I finish putting this food away.", and I follow-through.

If she freaks out (which happens), I encourage her to remember what I said. Usually once she says it out loud, it's enough to convince her to wait.

Our current struggle related to this is interrupting.

My son wants everything now, now now! It really worries me... once he knows something exists, he wants to eat/touch/play with it right away. Not sure how to practice postponing gratification, but I feel like it's really important he learns how to do it!
