I guess it's really just the last pump/bottle that really make the difference. I pumped one day at 3:30 and he hasn't eaten since 1:30 so he woke up ravenous at 4:15 but I'd just pumped so he was pretty frustrated.

I agree with @mewtill about the pumping. This is Xander's eating schedule:

5:00 a.m. - Nurse
9:00 a.m. - Bottle
12:00 p.m. - Bottle
3:00 p.m. - Bottle
9:00 p.m. - Nurse

And my schedule:

5:00 a.m. - Nurse
6:00 a.m. - Pump at home
11:00 a.m. - Pump at work
3:30 p.m. - Pump at work
6:00 p.m. - Nurse

So my pumping is a totally different schedule than his eating, but I still pump the same number of times he eats and am able to get enough for the next day (and sometimes a little extra).

I had them do on demand, every 2-3 hours, and asked them not to feed after 3pm. I pumped at work every 3-4 hours. I don't think you need to pump at exactly the same time your baby is eating, you just need to pump the same *number* of times (baby eats 4x so you pump 4x).

@septemberlove: I pumped on the way to at work 4:45am, 9am, noon and on the way home at 3.

My commute home was awful and it took me between 1.5-3+ hours in traffic to get to LO. Because there was no consistency, I told daycare to feed on demand. I would just pump at home if she was full from a last daycare feed.

Give or take a demand/schedule mix. She does get hungry every 3-4 hours, and eats at approximately those times. I just let her know that if it's been that long and she's getting crabby, she wants food. Daycare will understand if you want to BF your kid! When i was touring daycares, they even said that moms will BF on-site before taking their kids home

We had a rough schedule. But to avoid what you are talking about, I did ask them not to feed past 4 pm.

LO is on a general 3-hour schedule (8:30, 11:30 and 2:30), but i've seen from the daily log that sometimes they feed him a bit earlier (up to 30 minutes earlier) if he's getting hungry.

you can let daycare know if you want him to be on a general schedule, but that it's okay if they veer off the schedule if he's getting hungry. they'll let you know how things are working out.

She was on a schedule and they stuck to the schedule. She ate at 9, 12 and 3. Every three hours. Sometimes it fluctuated depending on the time she woke up and ate in the morning but it was always every 3 hours. That way I knew that I pumped the same amount of times she was getting bottles.

The schedule @Smurfette mentioned is what our daycare did, as well.

She is on a schedule in the sense that it is every 3 hours. But the time, no. It all depends on when she woke up for the day, or last nursed.

This morning, she nursed at 5, so they will give her the 1st bottle at 8, then 11, 2. usually she wants at least one bottle early though.

He's on a schedule at daycare and feeds at 9:00, 12:00, and 3:00 like you're thinking. I feed him at 5:00 a.m. (he can go 4 hours after this first-morning feed) and then at 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. If he gets hungry before his scheduled time though, they WILL feed him. It's usually only maybe 30 minutes early. If he's fussier even earlier, they assume it's not from hunger, since he usually can go 3 hours.

I think you can give your daycare a set schedule, but let them know to feed him if he gets hungry early. Some days that happens with Xander and he'll get a bottle at 5:00 p.m., right as I'm getting there to pick him up. Then I have to come home and pump, and it sucks. But that's not the norm. And his schedule at daycare is the same I have at home on the weekends, just nursing instead of bottles.

Or fed on demand?

Part of me really wants to put him on a schedule so I can match pumping to feeding. Yesterday I had pumped at 1:30, thinking I'd be nursing LO at 4:15 but my mother (who is only watching him the first week) gleefully announced she had fed him at 4 and he wasn't hungry and told me to go pump. I didn't, of course, because I'd just been away from LO all freaking day. So I want to avoid crap like that at daycare but at the same time, the idea that LO could get hungry before his scheduled time breaks my heart.

I was thinking I'd feed him around 6/6:30, then have daycare feed him at 9, 12, and 3. But my worst fear is that he could get hungry before. We nursed on demand while I was home so he never waited more than 1-2 minutes (if I had to go grab the boppy from another room or something).

I would love to be able to schedule so I could match feedings with pumping but is it worth it?

What do you have your LO's daycare do?
