I can't tell if DS is tongue tied or not but he is definitely lip tied. He is 2weeks old and I am looking into getting his lip snipped and his tongue checked. BF has been extremely painful thus far and since it is the same experience I had with DD I am thinking she is in the same boat.

I had one. I got it snipped when I was 20. It never affected my speech or anything but I was getting my tonsils out so the ENT said she could snip it at the same time. I wish I never had it done. The ENT snipped too far and exposed the muscle. I had to have stitches. Of course they didn't dissolve like they were supposed to and I had to get them taken out. Talk about painful! My tongue was so swollen after the surgery I couldn't talk for 4-5 days.

DS was born with it as well, we had it snipped before I went home. It made breastfeeding so much easier! Its amazing how quickly he tore up my nipples those first two days because of a poor latch.

DS had one too. Our old pediatricians office wouldn't even admit he had one, but 2 separate lactation consultants and a second pediatrician confirmed it. DS was having issues latching and the new ped we went to clipped it when DS was 7 weeks old.

My son had one, that a lactation consultant discovered when he was about 3 weeks old because he'd had problems with jaundice, dehydration, and gaining weight properly. It wasn't even bad enough to cause the heart shaped tongue but made nursing extremely difficult for him and extremely painful for me. One 3 second procedure later, he latched on for 40 minutes straight after not nursing for more than one or two sucks at a time up until then!!!! Our pediatrician had also assured us there was "no way" it would help with breastfeeding. Ha!

My son is tongue tied too. It never affected his ability to nurse ehich is why we never got it snipped. He was actually speech delayed and got us worrying about whether his short frenulum was the cause of it. We took him to a specialist - they said his is not that severe and we should take the wait and see approach. Turns out that he just had a normal delay in speech but I still worry that it will affect his annunciation.
My daughter does not have the condition though.

I had DS snipped at 2 weeks. He had what a lactation consultant and our pedi called "severe" tongue tie. He had a horrible latch and was losing weight very fast. My Mother was tongue tied until a couple years ago when it started to effect her gums and both my niece and nephew were also tongue tied. It wa such a quick procedure and I'm sure hurt me more than him. I was crying and he was already over it.

LO had a frenotomy on day 1 in the hospital. Our ped did it to avoid and BFing issues. One quick snip and it was done, although I thought the $400 she charged for it was a bit steep.

Yes, DD was extremely tongue tied. She had a heart shaped tongue without her sticking it out... Infact until we clipped it she couldn't stick it out past her lips & had trouble keeping it past her gums. It DEFINITELY interfered with feeding (nursing AND bottle feeding) so against our pedi's & ENT recommendation of waiting till 8 months when they would put her under general anesthesia to do it, we went to a local pediatric dentist & had it clipped in office at 7 weeks (they were both adamant that her being tongue tied would NOT affect breastfeeding).

She immediately nursed better and started gaining weight alot better too! We were both miserable before clipping it so I'm so glad we did!

Aka, attached frenum? And if so, did you get it snipped?

BOTH Wagon Jr. and Lil Miss Wagon have attached frenums. They must get it from Wagon Sr., who has it and wore a bib until he was 3, and still can drool if he isn't paying attention (usually sleeping). It hasn't caused any problems for Wagon Jr. yet, and so far so good for Lil Miss Wagon as well. The biggest concerns are breastfeeding (poor latch) and speech. Our dentist (and friend) told us they should all come in from frenulectomies at some point. They do it with a laser and it's apparently pretty painless. But I'm not sure I want to make them all go through it if they'd be fine without it!

This photo below inspired this thread :) Taken by our friend (actually, the dentist's husband!), and it shows off the short, heart-shaped tongue that tongue tie makes!
