The one closest to us it tiny but surprisingly seems to be doing ok. At least the parking lot is always packed especially on the weekends. I didn't think it would be so popular with just a handful of stores. The two major ones near us seem to be doing well. They are also always busy but I don't go to either very often.
There is one near my parents that is definitely dead or nearly there. The movie theater closed years ago and it was only kept alive by a Wal-Mart which has since moved out. It's not in a great area but I remember going there for the movies a lot when I was younger so it's a little sad.

We live down the street from a new outdoor mall that was built in the last decade. Always does well in the spring/summer/fall. Obvi dead in winter (MI).

The next one a few miles down is old, but still busy w traffic.
The upscale mall is always always busy and that was built back in the mid 90s.

We live in a small town without a mall. But this reminds me of one of my favorite malls back home. It's newly built with really nice, outdoor layout for residents taking a stroll. It's very pet friendly with water bowls outside. It's a gorgeous mall, but every time I go home, I expect it to be closed down. It's a ghost town! It was built during the economic downturn and never got the chance to establish itself.

@mrbee: have you seen any of the creepy photos of "dead" malls? I'll have to look them up and post a link when I'm on my computer tomorrow.

We have one we think is dying. The other is always crazy busy!! It's sad. Stores just aren't making it in the one that is dying. All the big stores are moving out and going to the other mall. :-(

My local mall is packed to the max and will undergo an expansion next year. It's also one of the most profitable in the city. I do live in suburbia, and we live for our malls!

Ours is dying.

It still has the anchor stores of sears, Macy's, JC Penny, and Belk, but I think two of them are on the way out, and the other two are geared almost solely towards people 60+. And half the stores in between are closed. A lot of mom and pop places have moved in and I think I might set foot in there once a year, and it's just into Macy's to buy makeup. There is a constant stream of store closings. Most people I know just make the 75 minute drive to Orlando malls for decent shopping anymore.

We have an outdoor mall, too, and there are decent stores there, but it was built during the economy crash and it's hugely vacant. Old navy and dullards is keeping it going, but there's less then 10 other stores and hundreds of never used storefront.

@Shutterbug: if you need a refresher in dying malls, you can come visit the one closest to me... it's where retail dreams go to die ;) but yes, the one closest to you is thriving (despite it's apparent heating/cooling issues, that makes me crazy! & i don't like the movie theater). the 'collection' can't be killed! hell, people are buying condos there so they never have to leave! speaking of which... cheesecake factory date?? :silly:

Half of it is! The other half has been updated and the other half is the area that no one wants to go to since there aren't great stores and it's where the mall rats hang out.

Ours is alive and well! It was renovated and expanded 5 or so years ago. There is another smaller one that's just a few blocks away from the busy one that has been sort of dying, except for the Macys and movie theater, but they are building a huge outdoor mall that will connect the two malls. It's going to be nuts. They're putting in a costco and all kinds of shops and attractions.

Yes! In our local mall there, are 2 jewelry stores, a payless shoes, and a few other weird shops run by small local businesses, plus the flagship stores. It's depressing to walk through it.
There are two other fantastic malls within an hour drive though.

The 3 malls closest to us are doing really well! One is more of an outdoor "lifestyle center" and the other two have done a great job with being revitalized. They've all been able to find upscale restaurants and tenants and you can never find parking at any of them!

Definitely dying. They tried to revitalize it with a remodel a couple years ago, and failed spectacularly. They did such a poor job on the remodel that there are holes in the floors, etc, and it looks terrible! That + empty storefronts, and I just don't even want to step foot in there.

The malls near me are on Michigan Avenue or right off of it. There's another mall in the burbs which is a great outdoor one. I really don't shop at any of them though since State Street has a vibrant discount retail scene going.

Growing up, there was a mall near my childhood home that slowly disappeared and went dead soon after a killing took place at an adjacent restaurant. It was the beginning of the end for that mall. The murderer got killed with Jeffrey Dahmer in prison.

My local mall is not dying, but rather alive.

The mall (PA folks, in the Exton area) I grew up going to is going down hill. At least from what I heard.

KOP mall which is one of the largest malls back home is certainly not dying. It's expanding! Which is great news!

I saw this link on FB about dead malls. Kinda sad.

Nope, one of the two closest to me is just sort of a run of the mill mall, but it has two anchor stores, a movie theater, and it's always busy. The other one near me is huge, newly-remodeled, and they renamed it "Collection" instead of "Mall" because they're trying to cater to the $$$$ crowd. The one near my work is also huge and always busy.

ETA: the run of the mill one opened in the 1990's, so that one might not make it. The other two opened in the late 1960's.

Nope! My mall is the largest one (outside of some outlets) in the whole corner of my state. New stores always fill the vacant spaces within 6 months. I live across the street from it so weekends and holidays are awful for me because people drive hours to come to the mall...there are ao many out of towners that make the traffic terrible!

I live near 2 malls with high end stores that attracts a lot of visitors for my city so hopefully they will be around for the long haul. I like the malls because it's a one stop shop with restaurants to eat at so we don't have to run around the city.

Thriving. It was dying at one point a few years back, but they were able to secure spots for Nordstrom and Target. That led to a huge change to make the mall more upscale. They are constantly expanding and adding new stores at an astounding rate. It also helps that the mall is right off of a major highway, and we are the drive through state with no sales tax.
