About what I expected, I knew I would go overboard on clothing and other unnecessary stuff. I didn't realize how many diapers and wipes we would go through tho!

More. I love trying baby gear and I love buying new things for her. One of my goals for this year is to reign in our unnecessary baby spending.

More. I was expecting the big upfront expenditures since we knew we would have to get all the gear ourselves, but I didn't think about all the little things that pop up with time or that he would eat so much food!

More. I thought when she started eating she would just eat what we eat, and we always have leftovers so it would be no big deal. But I like to buy her special organic food, she eats more fruits and veggies than I do, etc. So my grocery bill is pretty big.

And there's always those things that I have to buy a million of because she doesn't like the first thing I get. Sippys, bath tubs, swings, I still can't find a diaper cream I like.

More. We didn't receive any hand me downs so had to buy pretty much everything, although we did buy some used items the cost adds up. And this being my first baby I've bought some things I thought would be super useful only to discover they're not for us.

less, but only because our VERY generous friends & family provided all the baby gear (save for a crib) we needed. The only thing we buy on a regular basis are diapers (and I still haven't bought any in almost 2 months), wipes, breast pads and formula (and a small can of formula lasts us anywhere from 2-4 weeks since he's 99% breastfed).
I try reeeeally hard not to buy him clothes because truthfully he doesn't need any but I will admit an outfit or two sometimes sneaks itself into the house. And I would rather buy used baby gear than new - they use it for such a short time it's really hard to justify spending that kind of money!

It's about what I expected. Less in some areas, more in others. We got a lot of hand me downs so we're grateful to save on that. We buy a lot of second hand items. But then there are big ticket items. Like now we have 4 car seats between the two cars.

@zippylef: same!

They haven't cost that much but I have a problem with over buying: clothes, shoes, coats, headbands...what is wrong with me?! I really love buying new baby gear too. Things we don't even need.

Way less. She doesn't have a lot of gear, although she will need a new carseat soon here. Food? And I love to buy her clothing, but I love to thrift, so I don't usually spend that much. Museum memberships? Not that much, really. We mostly make our own fun.

More expensive... We had kinda figured it would be cheap the first year because we were breastfeeding and cloth diapering - we received a ton of hand me down clothes as well so we had everything he needed... but the cloth diapering didn't pan out after 7 months so there is now the expense of diapers. We had to buy a lot more clothes because the hand me downs were the wrong season. We bought a lot of his baby gear, like the rocking chair and crib.
And he eats soooo much. I thought a baby less than a year wouldn't impact our grocery bill - but it totally does!

The insurance itself covered what we expected, but "other" stuff has been pretty expensive...diapers...baby gear, etc.

I thought having a LO would be way more expensive than it is. Initially buying gear cost us a little bit (still under 1k), because we got most of it as gifts, but other than that, we only buy diapers and wipes(which we are still going through our stock). She needs clothes here and there but we buy those used to save a lot, and she is breastfed so that is free. We pay a co-pay for doctors visits, but the insurance pays the rest. Money she gets from family for gifts goes into her account, and that will be used for her future.
