Definitely not, which is one of the reasons why I love them. They have a 24 hour nurse hotline, and they have rarely asked us to come in even though they have a doctor on-site until 9 and also on the weekends. That being said, I think they were reasonable to ask to see your LO this time.

Our ped is very wait and see and will provide follow up via phone, but like others have said, since she didn't do the initial diagnosis she'd probably have us come in.

My doctor is never there. Can't talk to her on he phone ever. Not an option. It's almost impossible to get a same day appt. if they think it sounds urgent they tell us to go to the ER. 🙄

I called on Friday because my son woke up all night with a croup cough. The receptionist said "we are booked all day. And away on vacation next week - sorry." We had to take him to the ER.

The clinic we go to won't answer any questions or do anything without coming in person with the kid. I can't imagine it any other way (as inconvenient it can be at times - like I had to go in person with LO to get results from an ultrasound and a referral to a specialist one time - our doc did not even look at LO during the appt).

@T.H.O.U.: ours is quick to call in for pink eye too. But I think that's because pink eye is so insanely contagious they don't want to risk it coming in to the office 😂

I agree that mine would ask them to come in for that. I think there are enough other things that could be happening that an exam isn't unreasonable.

In general though one of the things I love is they are not the type to tell me to bring her in over little stuff. They have a nurse line and they are fabulous about helping me know when it's worth a trip in. We actually switched vets (not exactly the same, I know) because they refused to offer any advice over the phone and always said to bring them in. My friend uses them too and they wanted her to bring her 140 pound dog in after he ate 1 Hershey's kiss... um no, just tell us what to watch for.

The only time mine has been ok calling something in was for pink eye. They know my kids are in daycare, we have been seen for pink eye before so I explain that I know the symptoms and they are always happy to call in a prescription for drops without us being seen. Other than that though we typically go in for an appointment.

For something like that, mine would want to see him. But in general, they're pretty good about letting us make the call. So what I typically do is call, bounce ideas off the nurse, and give it another day or so. If what we discussed isn't working, then I'll call and make an appointment. I like that they let us make the call a lot of the time, because - hello, copays. And a lot of the time I just need someone to tell me I'm doing the right thing and not missing something simple to fix the problem. I mean, obviously, if it's a clear issue (like high fever and pulling at the ear), I'll just schedule an appointment on the first call. But for low-grade temp and fussiness, I just need some reassurance that it's ok to wait it out.

Yes mine would also want to see my kid in this situation. And they tend to lean towards "wait and see" in general.

I think mine would want to see her in a situation like that. But in general, if I call and speak to a nurse they give me very little info and leave it up to me if I want to bring her in, and I'm always like, I don't know, you tell me!! But now I can email directly with our actual pediatrician and she can answer questions directly and advise me better on whether or not to bring her in. It's so so helpful.

Honestly, I think most docs would want to see the kiddo in this situation. It might be different if the pedi was the one that diagnosed with yeast infection in the first place, but since they haven't previously seen your kid for this issue, I could see them wanting a visit before ordering testing.

I like the practice we go to currently, but am a little annoyed that they want you to bring in your child for everything.

For example, we saw an urgent care dr who told us my son probably has a yeast infection in his penis. Long story short, we've been treating that, and he is so much better. Fast forward to midnight-ish this morning, he came down with a fever. Now I'm wondering if he might have a UTI (which the urgent care dr said was possible, but unlikely) and I'd like a urinalysis to check. He has absolutely no other symptoms and hasn't been sick. I just wanted to bring in a urine sample, but they still want me to bring him in.

How would your Dr approach this? Are they easily accessible to speak with? Are there any other ways you can communicate with them? I'm just trying to gauge the current standard practice vs the "old fashioned" way of doing things.

ETA- we saw the urgent care dr on the weekend of July 4th after he kept crying/screaming and saying "ouchie" while grabbing his diaper. He was fine one minute, then cry out of the blue, then be fine again. He hasn't done that since we've been treating him per the Drs recommendations.
