We had DD on a mattress on the floor pushed against the wall so no rail needed. Since around 2.5 she has a trundle bed so she sleeps on the top level with bottom pulled out so no rail.

His toddler bed has rails so it's away from the wall a little. But the twin that he sleeps in at my parents house is against the wall and we put a body pillow next to him, just in case. Although, he's older so any younger I would buy the mesh rails probably.

If not, do you have rails on each side?
