@coopsmama: hope lo feels better soon! Be in the lookout for yeast rash. At the first site, we go to cloth wipes and water, and I make diaper cream with lotramin, zinc oxide and Maalox and it clears it up instantly!

What's considered quick in this case? We always go into the office when something isn't right and there's no prescribing anything without being seen.

Numerous peds have told us that the reason why we had ear infections is because there were colds that came before and the mucus collects in the ear canal. The shape of the ear canal changes as kids get older, helping them to become more efficient in clearing out the mucus. So, after a cold, I'd be on the look out for a fever and most times, it was an ear infection.

I think you have to weigh your alternatives. If your child is fine with nothing and they clear up, great. It's not been our experience and I would rather treat the actual problem then just dose with tylenol/motrin.

No. We've been lucky and able to catch the symptoms early. The last time DS had the beginnings of an infection the ped recommended administering ibuprofen 3x per day along with a nasal spray 2x a day. He gave us a prescription for antibiotics but said to wait 3 days. We didn't end up needing the antibiotics.

@Pepper: @Foodnerd81: Thanks ladies! It's such a tough call to know what to do when our little ones are sick. I'm feeling a lot better about the decision and just hoping she makes a quick turnaround. It's so hard to watch them be sick.

@matador84: Every 6 to 8 weeks?!? Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry -- for both them and you. How miserable. Have they ever figured out what causes them for your kids?

@Rainbow Sprinkles: Which ones does he have you try? I started her on garlic oil and mullein flower oil drops on Friday, did the salt sock treatment, rubbed lavender EO mixed with coconut oil on the bones behind and in front of her ear, gave chamomilla 6x for her irritability, used grapes red oil extract, tea tree oil, and didn't stifle her fever for 3 days! Nothing seemed to help and her fever just kept creeping up. It was really frustrating - would love to know what your doctor has had success with.

@2littlepumpkins: Several years ago I suffered through a c-diff infection for 9 months caused by a broad spectrum antibiotic that I really didn't need. I feel your pain! I hope you're feeling better soon.

Well, her fever hit 105 so we said that's it and got her started on the antibiotics. It's amoxicillin and I'm nervous for a reaction but hoping it will be just fine and that it will help. This is our first go with an ear infection for either kid and man, they are so frustrating.

So glad for everyone's input! It made me feel a lot better about giving them.

@Mrs. Pen: it's not always the doctor. You would be surprised how many times I've been yelled at (by patients) for not prescribing antibiotics for a viral infection even with a CBC differential to back me up. I've even had patients cry over it. Not everyone understands the problem and some docs have given up the battle. I agree that it's a huge issue though and only prescribe them if they are necessary and sometimes have some unhappy patients but I like to think I at least educate a few.

2/3 times we've known he has ear infections we've found out because he's in the ER with scary high fevers. The third time we brought him to the pedi for a lingering seal cough, and she told us he had an ear infection. She didn't prescribe them then because he didn't seem to be in any pain and wasn't burning up.

@Mrs. Pen: actually the only way you can confirm a bacterial infection is with a culture and sensitivity (blood, sputum, urine, etc). A CBC with diff will just give you an idea of the cause of infection (bacterial, viral, etc) but in now way confirms a bacterial infection without a culture.

@blackbird: ugh. HUGE medical issue that is SO easily preventable. Abx will only continue to be a wonderful thing if used correctly.

@coopsmama: ASK!! Seriously. Next time they're about to prescribe, ask for a CBC differential. The neutrophil count will be elevated with a bacterial infection, monocytes will be elevated in viruses. We know for sure that ear infections are bacterial, but other illnesses there is usually no way to know.

Neither of my kids have had an ear infection, but my second is neutropenic so she gets prescribed antibiotics for everything...a scratch, a puffy eye, fevers (along with being hospitalized)....it's too big of a risk to wait for a blood culture to confirm a bacterial infection and they can't trust her body to mount a response to any potential infections in it's own. On one hand I t really bothers me because I don't want her to become resistant, but I also understand the severity of our situation and appreciate them being proactive and every doctor taking her seriously. They are very cautious to rotate antibiotics whenever possible and usually won't perscribe the same one within a certain time frame of each other unless medically necessary.

My doctor is very hesitant to prescribe medicine in general (he won't give Zantac unless the baby is losing weight or screams whenever awake). But when it comes to ear infections, he doesn't mess around. My daughter is a really cheery sick kid so we usually don't catch them until they are really bad. We are about to get a second set of ears tubes because our only options were risking damage to the ear from persistent infections or basically constant antibiotic use. No one likes giving their kid antibiotics, but when you know it's going to fix their illness, you do what you have to do. Yes, antibiotics are over prescribed, that doesn't mean we should stop using them in situations where they are appropriate. A doctor who took a "wait and see" approach with a 104 degree fever with a clear cause that can be treated is not a doctor I would continue to see.
