@sapphire: yes. My ped said start at 6 months with DS1, but by DS2, said new research was pointing toward 4 months for allergy prevention. She is always up to date, which I appreciate, because she is nearing retirement!

@sapphire: Agreed! Our pediatrician recommended beginning solids at four months and explained that newer research is suggesting that introducing potentially allergenic foods between 4 and 6 months might have a protective effect against allergies. I wouldn't discount a doctor's education and experience based on my Internet mommy blog research.

@sapphire: Thanks for chiming in! I assumed they all needed to attend some form of continuing education.

@bluestriped bee: yes, physicians have continuing education requirements to remain board certified.

One thing I'm hearing here is that people think their led is out of date if they recommend solids prior to 6 months. AAP isn't even consistent within its own group about ideal times to start solids are there are good arguments either way. You have to look at the individual kid.

My pediatrician said she went to a conference last year. What kind of training are we asking for? Classes? Conference? Reading articles?

I'm in the scientific field but not a dr and I'm expected to go to conferences to learn about new research. These conferences usually has classes or seminar that you can attend. I'm sure as a Dr, they have these type of conferences. What about just reading up on new or current published articles?

I am hoping someone in the medical field can pop and explain what their job requirements are. I'm sure there is a component of their job where they go to conferences and training to learn new things. In my job, they call it 'continuing education'.

Yes but he also looks at the specific situation. With our older daughter we waited until 6 months to start. She had a lot of poop issues because of food intolerances, and I noticed a big positive change in her once we added purees. I asked the doc about starting earlier with our son because he has the same issues are her. He said he's totally fine with that. He said if our son was on the high end for weight he would absolutely want us to wait to start solids until six months, but because he's only 3rd% he was good with us going ahead and starting at 5 months, which he just reached yesterday so we're going to start this weekend.

Yes. In addition to following all current recommendations that I know about, he regularly discusses current research with us. But he never pushes anything. We love him.

Some of our friends seem to hear things that just aren't true as far as I can tell. I want a doctor that works with me and my family, but I also want factually accurate info!

Ours is up to date, but she's also pretty practical. She tells us what the AAP rec is and also what she's seen work. We started solids at 4 months after she assessed LO, but she warned us there was new research both ways on the topic.

Ha! Is it bad that my answer is "I don't know?"

I research things, and he has never suggested something that sounded out of line with what I have read, so that's good enough for me. I guess I'm just trusting of his experience as a doctor.

@Mrs. Lion: I agree with you! In our practice we see the oldest guy there, I love him! He's gentle, so patient, and has a wealth of knowledge. He has recommended a few things that I wasn't comfortable with, but I'm confident in my ability to do my own research. In the same breath, he has never made any issues about her sleep, or breastfeeding!

@lamariniere: Exactly. Any time we talk about solids/feeding or sleep, he's usually just like "well it sounds like thats working great for you" or "sounds like a good plan". I'm sure if I was suggesting doing something crazy he might speak up but nothing so far.

He's definitely up to date on vaccinations. As for the rest, we haven't ever really gotten or needed anything but pure medical advice (we never really discussed solids or sleep or anything like that), so it's hard to say. Also, things are done differently here compared to our first kid born in the US, so that accounts for some differences.

More or less. She recommended that we consider a vaccine for MenB, that isn't covered yet by provincial health care. It's not experimental or anything, just they are weighing the pros and cons of covering it (cost vs how many children contract it vs severity if they do). We decided to go with it, and I appreciated her insight.

However, when we were there when LO was 5 mo, she said we could introduce food anytime. That recommendation is a few years old (4+), but I don't really hold it against her.

Ours is pretty old school and said we could start solids at 4 months, but i had done my research and decided to wait. In the big picture I value his decades of experience treating sick kids over whether he is on top of every new trend, so I didnt hold that against him.

They are super awesome about this. It's one of my favorite parts of the office. I'm such a big believer in evidence based care (um, you'd think everyone would be...) They are frequently referencing very recent studies and findings and I really appreciate it.

Our primary pediatrician definitely is, but I think all of the doctors there are. The office staff and nurses who call you back, maybe not. I've disagreed with some of the advice I've gotten from the call back nurse.

Does your pediatrician stay current with new recommendations for care? Do they provide routine training and education for their staff?

Mine does and it was definitely one of the questions we asked when finding pediatricians.
I was on a local mom FB group last night and (I'll admit) I was appalled that some kid's pediatricians okay'd starting solids at 3 months. 3 months. And I"m not talking cereal in bottles for severe reflux.
