We have a very healthy pure breed Newfoundland, a healthy mixed breed cat and a not so healthy 12yo mixed breed cat (allergies and intestinal issues).

We're stating to talk about what to do with the not so healthy cat and it breaks my heart.

@crash806 my mil's dog is deaf. We communicate with her via sign language. She's still a good guard dog though.

@artbee: nothing is better than a rescue dog, I'm such an advocate for them. What makes me mad is that in Pedro's blindness, it was totally preventable if his previous owners gave him OTC eye drops everyday!

@crash806: Aww poor thing! He's lucky to have such a great mommy to rescue him! Our dog is a rescue too. He flinches a lot when we go to pet him, makes me so sad because I feel like someone had to have hit him before we got him. And he was brought back twice before we got him, so he has some major separation anxiety.

Our pug is deaf, blind, and has a sensitive stomach. We rescued him 3 yrs ago and he was do malnourished. He is now almost 11, so it's mainly old dog stuff we need to look out for now.

@Leialou: My friend's dog that I used to always get to dog sick had seizures. So scary!

@oliviaoblivia: Oh no, so sorry to hear that! This is my first dog, my dad's allergic so we never had any growing up. I've become so attached to him, it's going to be so hard when we lose him :(

@chopsuey119: Really? We've paid a lot of money for my dog's vet bills!

@Alivoo01: @Leialou: I guess he's healthier than I thought. DH got the expensive, thorough check up for him at the vet today because we were worried about him and he's getting old, and he said besides some dental issues and the allergies he's doing great! So happy about that!

Ours are healthy. Two pure-breds and one mutt.
I've read that "hybrid vigor" is a bit of a myth because it's likely that two dogs of different breeds still have similar health issues. We had a mixed dog that died of cancer and a pure-bred that lived to 17.

We have one mutt and one full chihuahua. The mutt is mostly coon hound. He suffers from seizures. It breaks my heart when they happen, which is about once a month. Other than that he is healthy and active. We make it a point to feed them food that doesn't have a filler as the first ingredient to help keep their weight in check, especially as the hound is getting older.

We have a mixed pup (Perkinese with Poodle) and she's very healthy. She had a herna when she was born, which was fixed before we got her, and she's had no issues. She gained a little weight this winter from lack of walks, but we are working on getting that back off with walks now.

My mom always told me that mutts were known to be healthier and have less problems. But my pup is the exception. He had cancer when he was a puppy so he had to have surgery. Now he has a very sensitive tummy and allergies. We have to be careful about what we feed him, and give him lots of meds for his allergies because he's always itching, especialy this time of year.
