@Mamaof2: She is happily playing when I walk in, but she gets extremely excited to see me, drops what she is doing and runs to me.

C goes in happily but when it comes to me saying goodbye she clings to me and whines a bit. Id say about once a week, or after staying home with me for a few days, she cries when I leave. But I know she loves it because when I pick her up she doesn't want to go. She takes my hand and shows me all of her toys and artwork.

@daniellemybelle: how is she at pick up?

My DS cried at drop off until almost age 6 - however at pick up he didn't want to leave.

I have found DS has issues transitioning away from me but once I am gone he is happy and plays with others and loves being there -

Mine just started to get excited now. She's 18 months. Before, she would walk right in and get her snack and all was well. But now, it's as if she remembers stuff from daycare and is excited before we get there. It's fun.

@daniellemybelle: Yep it's always been like this, we had a couple phases that she was would cry when I left, but 97% of the time she runs off with a "bye mom love you" and she disappears into the play area. It's usually sickness or after a bad night that makes her sad when I leave.

My LO also doesn't act super happy at drop off--she never cries either! I think it's just early morning and she's not fully alert yet....she typically creeps in the room very slowly and then kinda stands by the door surveying the room until a teacher picks her up and puts her at the table for breakfast.

But sometimes lately she will be really excited to show me a particular toy when I pick up, so I know she's having fun there. My LO is just very even-keeled and doesn't cry OR get super excited either way.

Thanks everyone! I should say I know she is happy and has fun there. Her teachers send me pictures of her smiling & playing and every time I pick her up she is always having fun. She just does not act super happy to be there at drop-off.

@illumina: @lamariniere: Oh, I know that only going twice per week has made it harder. I'm sure if she went four or five days per week, she would be more in the habit of going. But we have Grandma care Monday & Wednesday and on Friday I stay home with her, and I prefer that, not only because we save money, but also because she loves to be with my mom.

@looch: Thanks - I would be okay with that if that's the kind of kid she is. I am just wondering if it's personality, or the situation, or both, if that makes sense. I am very happy with our school but I do wonder if it's how she feels about going, or if it's just how she would be in that situation regardless of any variables.

@Adira: I don't think LO is old enough to really understand when I say we are going to school yet. She does know when we pull up where we are, and she usually just quiet. When we pull up at my mom's she gets visibly excited, so I know she likes it there better.

@LuLu Mom: Was she like that when she was younger? I am wondering what it will be like when she's 2 1/2...

My daughter LOVES daycare, she's one of the kids that runs in (normally) and she gets upset sometimes when we leave (if they are playing outside, ect.) She's 2 1/2 and tells me frequently she wants to go to school, so hopefully in the fall we can get her into preschool a couple days a week.

@Smurfette: T only works Mon-Thurs and J is the backup lady. T only has 4 kids there and one mom doesn't work on Fridays and the other two moms have grandma on Fridays. We're the only ones who consistently need Friday care. It actually generally works out OK because J will take E when T is on vacation in the summer or random days, but J is a lazy sitter, IMO, and I know that if E had fun, she would be happy to be there. But it's also just Fridays, and we love T so much....

@BananaPancakes: I think the message is really "sometimes it gets better, sometimes it doesn't." It isn't realistic to think that every situation is going to work out or get better.

Now, with drop offs, I do think some of it is age/understanding, some of it is environment, some of it is personality. When my son was in a daycare that had a lot of issues with staffing, he was having a very difficult time at drop off and also at pick up. Now, he's in a different program and he doesn't even want to be walked in, he's that confident and loves it there so much. He asks to go on the weekends.

@looch: That's an interesting theory. I should start asking my friend's with older kids to see if that's ringing true.

And DS loves school and can't wait to get there. They have to force him to say goodbye to me. He usually says "Bye, Mommy. Now you go to work," then hauls butt into the classroom. Yesterday I did early drop-off because he was standing on the front porch with his backpack yelling for us to go well before school started.
And I would say that the kids that clung to their parents at the start of the school year are still apprehensive about being dropped off. Sometimes they cling, but mostly they have to just be shoved off to the teacher so their parents can slip out. I think it just has to do with a child's personality. It'll be interesting to see if it changes at all next year with a new teacher (this is our first year).

Usually she runs to the door when I say ok, it's time to go to school. She only has issues at drop off if it is teacher she isn't use too (filling in) or she has been home with us for 3-4 days. Otherwise she starts playing right away.
She runs to us at the end of the day though.

DS is 19 months old and really enjoys his time there. I drop him off really early, but on the rare occasion he's awake during drop-off, he goes to the director willingly.

@daniellemybelle: How long has she been going for? I guess it probably takes a few weeks/months? for them to really get into it? I'm glad she's doing OK there though. I'm sure this is not the case, but some people have told me it is harder for LO's to adjust when they are only going a couple of days a week rather than 4 or 5. I'm planning to put S in daycare/nursery 1-2 days a week when she turns 2 in September so will be interested to hear how you get on with your S :)

A more experienced mom told me (when my son was going through bad drop offs) that her daughter never changed, that at the age of 10, they still had issues at drop off to school. I don't tell you this to be discouraging, but I do mention it to so that you can level set your expectations. Sometimes kids change, sometimes they don't, we can't really influence certain things as parents and we have to adjust the expectations on our reactions.

My son, who is 4, gets excited about daycare when we get there. My DD who is 15 months is not excited to go (and she goes every day, mornings only). Mondays are definitely hardest for her since she has had the weekend to forget about daycare. Depending on which teacher greets us, she will either go willingly or cry, but when I come to pick her up at the end of the morning, she is just fine.

Since your DD only goes twice a week, maybe she is still kind of leery about being there? I'm sure it will improve as she gets older though.

I feel like LO has adjusted to going to daycare 2 days per week, but I read about some of your LOs running into school or getting excited to go, and she is not. A good day is just going to her teacher quietly - she never smiles when she sees her teachers or classmates. A bad day is clinging to me or DH and crying. She is always playing happily at pick-up but very excited to go home.

I have a lot of confidence in our daycare. Her class has a smaller than typical ratio (3:1) and I know the teachers are sweet and attentive. I am wondering if she will ever love to go. I wish she would! But maybe some kids never are.
