@T-Mom: Bento snack box was a lifesaver for us. I usually put things like raisins or beef jerky strips...you know...things that take forever to chew! haha. He would sit there and chew chew chew while we finished up our meals.

The biggest thing to do is to make sure that he or she can be amused while you wait for food. Bring crayons and paper, a book, a cellphone with games or something else more creative. I find that when DD can be occupied while we wait to eat, she does well.

DS, who is 13 months old, he is a little more of a challenge. But soon he'll be easy to keep entertained at the table.

We don't go out to eat often though, because it just isn't as relaxing and enjoyable as it once was. A lot of times DH and I don't even talk to one another during the meal because we are each taking care of one kid.

My son is 27 months old and we've just recently begun to bring him to family type restaurants. He behaves fine, he'll eat some bread and drink his watered down apple juice and play with some stickers, just long enough for us to eat. But some days he's just not in the mood to sit, and we try to plan accordingly.

My kids do a lot better at lunch or brunch. I'm avoiding taking them out for dinner for a few months I think. Too close to bedtime and Sunny has just learned to throw a great screaming fit.

She's ok for short periods of time when she's well rested. If we push it and try to stay at the restaurant for too long, she starts climbing out of the high chair and trying to "visit" other people's tables. Not exactly polite restaurant behavior!

My daughter won't be confined in anything - stroller, car seat, high chair. At restaurants, we walk her around if she doesn't want to sit. Outdoor seating is good for that too. Once the food comes she happy with that.

LO is only 12 months old but so far we haven't had any bad restaurant experiences. Sometimes he will get antsy toward the end of the meal and we'll have to hold him. Other than that, not too bad. I'm kind of scared of what the future holds.

@banana: my DS is the opposite! He was an angel until recently (18 months)! I'm going to pack a bento like you are suggesting and see if that helps.. He definitely cannot wait for food if he is hungry so maybe this will help.

She's still pretty good but she gets bored quickly and isn't patient when it comes to food. We have to either have a snack to tide her over until dinner comes or she will start grunting REALLY loudly expecting a meal

My LO was generally good at restaurants but not great. He would get very antsy and bored. Since I pack him a bento, he would finish his meal before ours even came out. That leaves either mommy or daddy entertaining him while the other tries to eat. Around 18 months he became a great at restaurants and rarely ever complained. He loves jam/butter packets and stacks them up for fun. He is also a very good eater at home and takes his food time seriously.

My son is as good as we want him to be. We have him in a bench seat and he just wanders around in the seat. No throwing food etc. but we don't force him to sit absolutely still.

@MrsCB: Our highchair at home has a better harness and she can't stand up while she eats. Cheap highchairs at restaurants don't work that well. She was well behaved at restaurants from birth til 14.5 months! Lol.

She does better at home...maybe because the surroundings are boring for her? She wants to stare at everyone now!

My son used to be horrible in restaurants when he was younger but at around 18 months, he became an angel. He sits there the entire time now and eats with us. I always pack a mini bento box for him to snack on after he eats his meal (total life saver!). And I'll usually put things that take a while to eat. haha.

We go through periods where it's easier or harder. DS is actually harder than DD right now because he cries until we feed him and then he wants to get down to explore as soon as he's done.
