I agree with the prunes for the constipation. LO would get constipated every few days when we started purees so I got little jars of the Earths Best prune purée and it helped a lot.

@twodoghouse: I started the pouches around 9 months. At first, we were emptying them into a bowl and spoon feeding but then daycare decided to teach him how to eat directly from the pouch using his pacifier (putting the pacifier in his mouth and then switching it with the pouch). It worked really well. Ella's Kitchen pouches are the ones that he likes best and they have a great one that already has prunes in it. They are sold at Target.

@Mae: i didn't have a chance to be nervous about eggs because he grabbed some pumpkin pie off dh's plate on thanksgiving and it was gone before we could get it out of his hand. Made with almond milk and crust with walnuts so we tested out nuts that way too. Oops! With hummus i put it on a chip and he eats it off then i eat the chip. Real classy in these parts!

@skipra: those are good ideas! I've not tried eggs because I'm scared. With her being MSPI and allergic to avocado now too I'm worried about allergies and I know that is common. What do you give with hummus? I don't know if she'd understand dipping yet.

@Mae: have you tried eggs and hummus? G loves them and they have more protein and fat. Hummus makes him a bit gassy so I only let him have a tiny bit. Also quinoa with olive oil is good. You can mix oil with things like applesauce or justdouse veggies and roast them. He's had some fish (salmon) too and liked it. If you can't tell we sometimes have bad nursing days and G loves solids so we try to give him the most nutrient dense things that are mspi friendly.

@twodoghouse: I just use regular prune juice. I didn't even know there was a baby kind :) I've been doing 3 tablespoons of oats (regular oatmeal too), 1 tablespoon prune juice and 2 tablespoons water. Then microwave for 1 min. And when it's cool I just put it on his tray and let him play. He probably plays with food as much as he eats it, but I'm ok with that.

We do water with meals, too, but I'm not sure if that helps him poop or not. He's not drinking very much, because as much as he loves his straw cup, he is a serious dribbler.

I offer about 2 oz/day but she probably drinks only half of that. She's obsessed with her straw cup and I put about 2 oz/day in it but she spits out as much as she swallows usually :) But she also isn't really consuming that many solids yet. I mean she had her best day ever the other day and she ate 1/6 of a pear and about 10 puffs. Thats all I really offer this young.

ETA: I'm a little cautious with both solids and water because we are still dealing with sporadic bottle refusal (when she should REALLY be hungry bc she only takes 4 bottles per day). And it seems that she needs to be REALLY hungry to eat. So I'm wary of her filling up on finger food and water because I know she is nowhere close to being ready to get real calories there and I don't want her to forego milk calories in favor of produce that have bulk but not much fat (since I can't give her good fatty stuff like cheese bc of the mspi).

I didn't read all the responses but have you tried prunes? Both my guys LOVE them and my older LO has like 5 foods he eats. He tries to steal his brother's prunes every single time. G doesn't love purees but eats the entire jar of prunes in one sitting.
Also isn't it probably fine to start some regular food? Things G loves that aren't constipating are avocado, quinoa, peas, blueberries.
Maybe if you're not comfortable moving away from purees yet you can let him try to feed himself? Liad up spoon and let him go at it. G eatsbetter that way!
ETA pouches are great too!

I found a prune juice concentrate with prebiotics that has helped LO's constipation. We also use the Gerber prune and apple juice.

@fussygal: Aw, I'm sorry DD has had tummy trouble with solids too. I think I'm going to try the little chunks and see how it goes. Maybe just getting a few pieces at a time would be enough to prevent the stomach problems.

@gilmoregirl: Ok now I definitely want to try Puffs and see how he does. Maybe he's at least like scooting them around the tray. Do you use regular "adult" prune juice or a baby version? (I have no idea if there's a difference? But the pear juice we tried was a Gerber baby kind. Probably just a marketing thing.) and yes, this is much more difficult than I thought it would be. They showed interest in our food really early on. I like cooking and love eating, so I figured this would be a piece of cake. Not yet!

@Mae: That's awesome that Fia's doing so well with the puffs and other finger foods! I think I'm going to try puffs with him and see what happens. Blake does well with water, especially since we got the straw cups. How much do you give her? Our ped said not more than 2 oz/day but since he takes so much formula (30 oz usually) in addition to nursing, I wonder if I could up that amount. He's growing like crazy so I doubt trading a few oz of formula for water would be a problem.

@Pirouette: I think this is what is like to do - small little bits even though it's technically not BLW and see how he does.

My LO wouldn't eat anything until he was 9 months old. Not even purees. We kept trying and eventually, he got into purees (especially pouches). Now at 11 months, he's onto table food. We thought maybe he had a food aversion because he had reflux. By the time he really started liking solids, he'd mostly grown out of the reflux. I'd suggest mixing a bit of prune juice in his foods and to keep trying.

i don't have the added complication of having 2 mouths to feed, but LO had a lot of stomach discomfort when she started purees and eventually we had to stop them entirely. At her ped's suggestion, we switched to "BLW" - i put it in quotes because we didn't follow the rules, we just started feeding her whatever we were eating. everything except dairy (she had MSPI) and the major allergens. Just cut it up small and let her figure it out - we'd feed her some, she'd feed herself some, didn't matter. she LOVED it! she devoured foods of all kinds and is a great solids eater these days. Not to mention she had great dexterity for feeding herself with her hands and with fork or spoon very early on. So, i say give it a shot! My LO didn't want to eat for sustenance, she only wanted to eat as a social activity, so this was what worked for her. I'm not really sure what to say about the spitting up, because my LO never did - she never even choked. but we didn't do BLW - like we didn't give her long strips of stuff to hold or anything, we gave her very small pieces and taught her to chew.

Anyway, i hope it helps - let me know if you have any questions!

Aw, poor blake/babies! :)

So I know I told you a little on IG but I never pass up an opportunity to expand haha. So as you know we have been doing mostly BLW. Which Fiona has done pretty well with (sort of) because she is a huge fan of putting everything she can get her hands on into her mouth. But everything I gave her she pretty much put in her mouth, put a sour face on, and spit it. She did okay with some things. Avocados and bananas, mostly. Sometimes she'd eat a few bites of those. But mostly it was her chewing on things and being disappointed they weren't plastic chew toys. We tried stuff like oatmeal mixed with fruit too and it was basically the same. I also tried some pouches I bought and she actually liked the pear/spinach one okay but wasn't interested in the apple/blueberry/spinach.

So that is why I bought the puffs. I just wanted to try something totally different with her and see if she was able to pick it up and get it in her mouth. Plus she thinks it is funny when we crunch on food so I thought maybe she'd like to crunch too. She immediately looooved them. The only food she didn't make a bad face about and that she hasn't spit out at all. She also has improved significantly in her pincer grasp in the week I've been giving them to her. It's so freaking exciting to me that she actually WANTS to eat something. Also after a few days of those I gave her a pear again (which she liked before sort of-- but still spit out a lot) and she suddenly did so much better with it. Less pick up/lick/throw. More pick up/chompchomp/swallow. So I feel like the puffs are sort of helping her understand about food.

I'm not so sure about the constipation stuff though. Fiona has never had that issue at all. But I sort of wonder if any part of that is because she really likes water? Ever since I started giving her solids I gave her water too and she is allll about it. We do the straw cup once/day and she also is constantly reaching for my cups (I only drink water so thats easy) and I give her sips whenever she wants.

Oh and re: gagging-- fia actually does better with bigger food (like a pear cut into 1/6ths rather than skinny slices) because she can't get so much in her mouth and she has to mush it rather than break off pieces. She definitely gags sometimes and I've fished pieces that made me nervous out of her mouth. The whole process is a little bit nerve wracking but I figure you've got to do it some time right? lol

I dunno if it's technically okay but I started giving my kid puffs at like, 6 months. They are awesome for buying me time (he recently figured out how to eat them from a snack cup and it is great) and don't seem to affect his tummy.

He is 9 mo now. Purees were a bit of a disaster and his ped actually told us to just move to table foods. I've been really slow about it (soft spears of steamed veggies, mostly). Sometimes he would spit up the food I gave him, but I always ignored it because he's always been a spitter, and I am wondering now if I shouldn't have done that.

Only in the last two days have I been feeding him "my" food in what is (I think at least?) actually BLW. We definitely have digestive issues sometimes, so I have been feeding him oatmeal made with some prune juice for breakfast.

Good luck to you though! I am finding feeding solid foods to be far more confusing than I expected.

Aw, poor guy!! We're kind of in the same boat at 9 mos, but have seen progress the past two weeks with some modified BLW. When DD started purees at 6 months she went from pooping every day to once every 7-10 days. Although she didn't seem constipated (it was never hard, but there was a lot of grunting sometimes), I think she was having some tummy issues with it all and was refusing purees because of it. A few weeks ago we started giving her LITTLE chunks of what we were eating and she gobbled it up. I was pretty shocked! I'm still nervous to give her big chunks and she doesn't bring food to her mouth yet so it's still a lot of me hand feeding, but I don't mind and her poop issues have resolved, too!

I hope you find something that works for you guys! <3

ETA: She now also lets us feed her purees 75% of the time (trying to use up what we have!).

So my twins are 8 months old and we are still having issues with solids. We have finally found something DD likes (peaches) and can usually get her to eat things mixed with peaches (butternut squash, oatmeal, apple purée). Because it's peaches, she does fine and doesn't deal with any constipation issues (except with the apples, oh my gosh was that a bad night).

DS was having major constipation issues in the beginning. He would be up all night struggling to poop, in pain and crying. Once he pooped he'd settle down. We tried giving him pears and it wasn't any better. Our ped said we could try diluting pear or apple juice in some water and try that. That does help, but now it seems that he has an aversion to eating solids. He refuses to eat more than a bite or two of any purées I make. We've tried peaches, pears, butternut squash, sweet potato, oatmeal, avocado, and carrots. He did eat a couple bites of puréed green beans for the first time today. I don't know what that will do to his stomach tonight, though.

I'm curious about trying BLW weaning with him, as he seems to have a huge interest in what DH and I are eating and zero interest in purées. However, I have no idea how to go about BLW. The couple times I've given him little bites of things (avocado, steamed mushed peas, baked peach before I puréed it) he has gagged and projectile spit up. That doesn't seem to bode well for BLW? Also, would it be crazy to try more "advanced" things (pasta? Cheerios or puffs?) with him if he can't even tolerate puréed fruit and vegetables? I know 8 months is still early and it may just take him a while to get the hang of this, but in the meantime I feel guilty making all these purées for DD and DS cries and wants up in his high chair, but them cries and whines when I try to give him purées. I just don't want to leave him out? (#twinmomissues)

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone else's LOs had similar issues with solids and if/when/how you overcame it. Anyone switch from purées to BLW with success?
