I had a D&C because they were worried about a possible molar pregnancy, so they wanted to be sure all the tissue was removed and they sent it off to pathology to have it tested. (No molar pregnancy btw). The surgery wasn't bad at all. I spotted the first couple of days and then the bleeding got pretty heavy. It took 10 days for the bleeding to stop. They prescribed me vicodin for the pain, but I never needed it. It's a personal choice. I had a natural miscarriage, then d&c last year because the natural miscarriage lasted for over a month. (Rare!) The d&c wasn't bad at all. As others said, it was harder emotionally. Physically, it wasn't a big deal. I'm sure no matter what decision you make will be the best one for you. I'm so sorry. I have only had a natural mc, but my friend and a D&C and while obviously not a great experience, she said it wasn't that bad. I had a D&C with our loss (actually, I think it was technically a D&E since we were a little past the first trimester). The hospital staff was super nice, I went in at like 7 AM and I think I was home by 2 PM. Some cramping and bleeding, but physically it wasn't bad at all, and I liked at least knowing that it was OVER. It was hard enough emotionally, and I think I would have had a harder time waiting it out at home. I also found out at my 12 week apt. that the baby had stopped growing at 6 weeks. They gave me the option to take pills to pass the baby, and I tried two different kinds of pills and it didn't work. So I had to do the D&C. I really didn't want to do that, but in the end it really wasn't bad at all. I honestly didn't have that much pain like your friend did. Hopefully you won't either! Then like I said.... I had to have another D&C. We MC'd right before 10 weeks when a US showed that our baby hadn't grown since 6 weeks. We were given a pill option, where we inserted 4 pills vaginally and MC'd at home. It was pretty painful, but they can prescribe painpills ahead of time. It's reassuring to know that it's not that horrible. One of my friends also had one a couple of years ago and I was just asking her about it. She said the first two days were painful and then it was fine.
