I have this problem too and it makes me dread bed time. My hip pain has started within my first trimester and continues throughout my entire pregnancy both times. The only relief I have found is to stretch before bed (sit with my legs in a butterfly position) and to sleep with my legs straight and a pillow in between them. I also deal with restless legs so falling asleep has been next to impossible these last few months and I am finding myself sleeping on the couch more and more.

My belly started hurting this week sleeping on my sides too!! And I'm normally a belly sleeper, so I've been waking up on my back. D'oh! As other posters have said, I heard your body will wake you up before you can do "damage" so I try sleeping on my side, but if I wake up on my back, I don't freak out.

Pillows, lots and lots of pillows. I am a stomach sleeper as well. I hate to tell this but it will get worse once you get bigger. Just change positions as much as you can.

I definitely get pain in my hips when I sleep on my side. The snoogle helps a lot but I also move positions a lot. I wake up somewhat on my back a lot too. I think somewhat on your back is ok as long as your head is propped up.

I use a snoogle with a body pillow on my other side as well. I kind of wedge the snoogle under my bump. It helps!

I'm a stomach sleeper through and through, and my Snoogle pillow lets me get into a position where I'm not putting a lot of pressure on my hips, but I'm also not lying flat on my stomach (impossible now anyways). Because the 'tail' bit goes between your knees as well, it stops a lot of joint pressure as well!

Do you have a Snoogle? I've found it more helpful that just a body pillow.

But yes, this is something I've been dealing with for the past few months (I'm 39 weeks now). I think I've gotten it pretty well under control now. For me, the biggest help, aside from switching sides every couple hours through the night, is stretching before bed, which was recommended after discussing it with one of the PTs at my gym.

I do standing pigeon pose for a couple minutes on both sides before getting into bed each night (like this: http://www.fitsugar.com/Bed-Stretches-Standing-Pigeon-Tight-Hips-3368271). Then I sit in tailor's pose for a couple minutes after I get into bed (like this: http://www.healthyvegetarianpregnancy.com/wp-content/uploads/2012/02/tailors-pose.jpg). I find that on the nights I remember to stretch I have no pain or almost no pain through the night.

I also spend a lot of time at the gym using the foam rollers to roll out my IT bands (the IT bands run along the outside of your thigh from your hip to your knee).

I'm not surprised a soft topper isn't helping, but I wonder if a thick memory foam one would? I was starting to get that on my regular spring mattress-- especially in the hip I was laying on-- but we just switched to a tempurpedic and it's completely better on my hips. Obviously a mattress is a big investment, but even the toppers might help?

I also sleep with 3 pillows-- head, hug, and between my knees, but it sounds like you are doing that already.

I start out on my side but wake up on my back every night because my nose is so stuffed up that it's the only position I can actually breathe. Breathe right strips don't stay on me for more than a few hours so it makes no difference if I use them.

My doc said that as long as I make an effort to not lay flat on my back when I am awake adn at least try to sleep on my side it isn't anything to worry about. I have yet to try a body pillow because we are in a queen bed so it would be a tight squeeze.

My doc had no issue with back sleeping if that was the only way I could get comfortable. I also had terrible hip pain when I laid on my side. My doc assured me that if blood flow was an issue my body would wake up and I would want to roll on my side.

I slept on my back til the very end with my first,
With my second, sleeping on my back was impossible so I slept on my sides.
Find a position that works and try to get some sleep!

My DH just got one for me. I am a dedicated side sleeper and it. is. awesome. I used a plain ol' body pillow last pregnancy and this is going to be so much better as I grow.

I slept on my back a lot! I've always heard that you'll get uncomfortable on your back before it has a chance to hurt the baby.

ETA: I also built a little fort like thing with pillows so I could sleep on my stomach. I just left a hole for my belly.

I talked to my OB about it and he said the advice really is just that you don't lay flat on your back, but you don't have to lay completely on your side. He said basically as long as one butt cheek is off you are fine.

Have you tried some kind of wedge under your belly, maybe the weight of the belly is putting additional strain on your hips? I also ended up sleeping on my back (inadvertantly) a lot. I'm not even a back sleeper...

I seriously have an impossible time sleeping. I used to be a stomach sleeper but since that isn't much of an option anymore I am on my sides... which hurt. I have hips for days and they don't help. We added a thick cushion to the mattress and my body pillow doesn't do anything since the hip that hurts is the one I am laying on. It isn't uncommon for me to end up on my back because both hips hurt too darn much to lay on them and I know that isn't good either.

Anybody else deal with this? What helped? I have atleast 4 more months of this torture!
