We went for LO's weight check and he gained exactly 1 pound in 2 weeks! We haven't done any fortifying during those two weeks. The first week was mostly pumped milk and some similac sensitive formula and some comfort nursing. The second week was mostly nursing with 2-6oz of pumped milk or 22 calorie Neosure (just in case he wasn't quite getting enough through nursing).

I feel more confident with nursing having seen this weight gain. I still like the idea of his 11pm feeding being a bottle so I can get a little extra sleep but I'm proud of where we are!

I think that sounds great! You have to do what works for you, and it sounds like you have a great system! I also didn't end up where I imagined us being, but she's thriving so I'm happy :)

@septemberlove: Love your last post. Supplementing and exclusively pumping allowed me to be the best mom I could be too...and he still got some sort of breast milk. It was the best of both worlds for me...and kept me sane. You're doing wonderfully, and I'm so glad that you've found your balance. Keep it up

@highwire: I honestly think supplementing helped me continue attempting to breastfeed. It took such a huge weight off my shoulders and knowing he's getting a bottle a day (sometimes its pumped milk, sometimes formula, sometimes a little of both) eases my anxiety about his intake. I am definitely thrilled to be unexclusively breastfeeding because it helps me be the best mom I can be.

@Adira: thanks! I'll definitely update!

I'm so happy for you! This really sounds like a great combination (and you being able to get a good stretch of sleep is AWESOME)! Plus, you don't have to be exclusive to be reaping all the benefits of breastfeeding! It sounds like your baby is happy and content and thriving just fine! You're such an amazing mother! Please keep us posted on his weight check tomorrow!

Good job, momma! I hate that term "exclusive". I feel like we need to start a little club of proud mommas UNexclusively breastfeeding. :)

Thanks :) I'm anxious for the weight check but he's had 5-7 soaked diapers and 1-2 poopy diapers every day and has been awake and content after most feedings. We're using the higher calorie formula for the supplementing just in case he's not getting enough volume for weight gain. I would be surprised if he hasn't gained appropriately. He just seems so content and the diapers seem appropriate.

Any amount of breastmilk is extraordinarily good for him. Also, sleeping from 9-4 is amazing, and you will be a much happier mother for it.

I am SO proud of you! You really have worked your butt off & I'm glad that you're getting into a groove where you can still breastfeed BUT also not make yourself absolutely nutting!

I REALLY hope his weight check goes well & hopefully as he begins better and better at nursing he could move to just that (no bottles, pumping, or formula to keep stocked.... if you're anything like me you hate washing bottles & pumping. lol). If not though, that's okay & you know that what you've accomplished is still AMAZING!!

Fx for good news on Tuesday!

Sounds like you've found the right mix for *you* and that's what really matters. You are such a auperstar of a mom and doing such an amazing job for that little boy of yours!

If there's one thing that I've learned during my measly 9.5 weeks of motherhood, it's to throw out all expectations of what motherhood will be like. This may not be how you pictured it, but it's working and you have a healthy, growing baby, which is absolutely the goal!

Great work!! I am struggling with the vision of breastfeeding I had during pregnancy as well, and while our situations are different, we are also doing nursing plus formula and expressed milk. I am proud of you!

Good for you for finding a routine that works for you and LO. I don't think that parenting is ever exactly what we pictured, you just have to adapt to your situation as best as you can to keep you both happy and healthy! That's great that DH is helping with a bottle so that you can get a nice stretch of sleep - that makes such a difference!

That is great!! You should be so proud of yourself for sticking it out this long. Don't worry about not being EBF, he is still nursing for the bonding and the benefits if your milk. Seriously you should are awesome for trying as much as you have. I would have given up.

But we've been breastfeeding pretty consistently for the past 5 days. He nurses around 4am, then every 1.5-3.5 hours throughout the day. He gets a bottle of pumped milk or formula around 11pm-12am (DH has been feeding him this most night so that I can sleep from 9-4). It's usually formula because I hadn't been pumping at night and my supply had adjusted for that.

Sometimes I top him off during the day with some pumped milk or formula but most of the time he just nurses and is content. His wet and poopy diapers have been right where they should be.

I think I'm okay with this. It's far from what I envisioned when I was pregnant but I think we're in a good place.

He is going in for a weight check on Tuesday and I'm hopeful that he'll be in good shape with weight gain and we can continue on this path.
