I itched a lot with my first pregnancy and it did not turn out to be anything serious. My doctor recommended oatmeal soaks in the tub and lotion! It went away with delivery and did not occur in my more recent pregnancy.

@Mrsbells: Yup. I have them on only one leg. The Epsom salt baths seem to help. If I don't take one each night, I wake up itching like crazy.

I got it checked out and I was luckily okay. The doctor mentioned that dry skin might have made things worse so recommended sarna lotion, and it helped a bit.

This is a totally different issue but I have itchy varicose veins that sometimes wake me up at night and no amount of itching make themselves stop. I've found that they don't bother when I have taken a bath with Epsom salt. Might be worth a try.

@Paddington10: I just went through this and posted about it a few weeks ago. I have been super itchy to the point it drives me nuts. I posted on here about the liver thing and was advised to request the blood work. It turned out to not be the liver issue but its better to eliminate that possibility by requesting the blood work.
I also switched from my regular body wash and lotion to using cetaphil which has helped a bit. I'm still so itchy and irritated all over. Counting down the days til this pregnancy is over

Thank you everybody. I just got my LFT (liver tests) back and they are very low, which is good, so the nurse doubted the bile test would indicate anything is amiss. Phew!

I had extreme itching around 35/36 weeks? It was unbearable. I was literally clawing all over my belly and didn't care if I was taking off skin as long as I could scratch away. OB told me to use calamine or hydro-cortisone to help, but they only provided temporary relief. Like an hour at most. I had blood drawn for cholestasis, but didn't have it.

@Paddington10: I think bumps might just be regular stretch mark itchiness or PUPPS. I had no bumps with my Cholestasis.

@Paddington10: I didn't have any kind of bumps with my Cholestasis, so hopefully that will make you feel better. And the fact that it's mostly on your stretch marks does sound more like routine itchiness in pregnancy.
Just pay attention to worsening or if it becomes more specifically on your extremities rather than your belly. Then it doesn't hurt to get tested.

Good luck!

Thank you everyone! I am 34 weeks right now. The itching is definitely not unbearable but certainly noticeable, but probably even more noticeable now that I'm thinking about it and Googled it. It is worse on my stretch marks, where I have a few little raised bumps. This is my second and I don't remember this issue with my first at all. Oddly when not pregnant my liver enzymes are usually super low so I don't have any kind of a liver problem in "real" life, so I hope this is just a weird symptom that goes away. :meh:

I had really terrible itching on my palms and soles of my feet both in the first tri and third tri. Since I was in the hospital when I had it in my third tri, they tested me and my labs were borderline for Cholestasis of pregnancy. Since I was delivering early anyway they just gave me the urso drug to help with liver function.

I had cholestasis and the itching was horrendous! It kept me up at night and I was beyond miserable. My Dr monitored me and I delivered at 36 weeks (twins). If you continue to have issues, push to get tested. I don't think my Dr really understood the severity of it and I had to push to be tested. I hope it gets better for you!

I had ithching on my hands, arms, legs and feet mostly and did end up testing positive for Cholestasis, the issue you are referring to. I was induced at 37 weeks.

It's a simple blood test so it doesn't hurt to ask to be tested.
It's true that they would still probably wait till 37 weeks to deliver you if you had it. So I wouldn't worry too much about not getting in this week.
But if it persists I would go when you get back.

I had borderline ICP with my third. The itching was uncontrollable and I left my body with bloody scabs every where. It was unlike anything if experienced before.
It started after a round of antibiotics for a sinus infection. I went in to L&D when I woke at night and was scratching my feet with a hanger. My liver function test came back screwy but the ICP test was barely OK. They had me quit the amox and reassess. It went away for a bit but peaked the weekend before my schedule c-section. The bloodwork takes a few days to process so it wouldn't have changed the outcome.
My daughter was healthy but very very large despite arriving ten days early. My OB thinks her size alongside my illness caused my liver to struggle.
I'm totally fine now though.

If the itching is keeping you awake and is unbearable please go in. ICP moms are routinely delivered at 37 weeks to avoid still birth.

Most of the time it is PUPPs. My friend had a severe case and it ended up being Cholestasis which is a really rare thing.

I did! My midwife got some blood work for the liver issues and it was negative. Turns out I had PUPPS. It was AWFUL!!! I wasn't miserable until I got that, then I'd wake up itching and it was insatiable! Ugh...

75% of those that get PUPPS are pregnant with a boy and it's usually the first pregnancy.

ETA: It started for me around week 35 and was just on my stretch marks but then it got worse and worse. Spread to my arms and legs and hands and feet. I had a pretty bad case though. There are lots of ideas of different "remedies" out there but they didn't work for me. The only REAL treatment is delivering the baby! I hope for your sake you don't have it!

Yeah, I forget the abbreviation for it. I had itching while I was on hospital bed rest. They checked my liver (blood test, I think?) and my liver was fine. I determined that it was one of the lotions they used for my monitoring. I switched to baby lotion.

How far along are you?

I forget when the itching started for me. It was somewhere between 28-34 weeks... I think it was around 32 weeks.

Anyone else ITCH? I should not have googled. This can be a symptom of a serious liver problem that causes still birth! But apparently it's really severe itching? Has anyone experienced this? Mainly my stretch marks itch and my soles of my feet but not horribly, only if I pause to notice it, but now I am scared. We are away on vacation all week not near my dr and not sure what to do. I called the nurse who said they wouldn't treat it at 33 weeks anyway so...no real point in rushing home to test? But I am freaking out. Anyone experience itching?
