@MsLipGloss: Good to know!!! I'll stop using the Jojoba Oil in case that's causing a problem!

@mrs. wagon: Thanks for the info!! I don't have another appointment until September, so I'll have to call my ped and see if they'll prescribe (or at least suggest) some hydrocortisone for Xander. He's drawing blood all the time, and yesterday was particularly bad, poor little guy.

@Adira: I tried everything under the sun for extended periods of time and she was still drawing blood scratching her back every night :( after a particularly bad bloody onesie and sheets one night I finally asked the ped about it at the appointment we had that day, and the NP didn't hesitate to prescribe a stronger hydrocortisone than the OTC kind. It cleared up her eczema right away!! When we're not as religious with it it does come back quickly though. Definitely talk to your ped (I didn't try the hydrocortisone OTC stuff until I talked to them and tried aggressive use of aquaphor and vaseline) and they'll probably prescribe the hydrocortisone if he's drawing blood wtih his scratching.

@Adira: I don't know about jojoba, but coconut oil, when applied topically, can be really drying! I didn't believe it until I experienced it for myself! Totally counterintuitive that an oil can be drying.

@MsLipGloss: Wait, really??? I haven't used coconut oil, but I was using jojoba oil, which I think is similar. I thought oils were supposed to be good moisturizers...

@blackbird: I haven't tried that at all. Would that work for his face? He wouldn't be able to soak in it really, but I could rub it on him?

Could you do a colloidal oatmeal bath? E's eczema was itchy and when we gave her a bath, we'd dump some in the little bath tub and let her soak a little longer than usual. We used it in addition to a very mild steroid cream that cleared it up very quickly

Definitely call. It helped C really quickly. He scratches his face up all the time too, but I don't think it's because he's itchy. He just still doesn't have good control of his hands and his nails grow SO fast! I think his skin being so dry makes it easier to scratch/cut.
I worry about him getting it in his mouth too, so I rub it in really well, and clean his hands at the end of the lotion routine.

@coacheswife123: I probably shouldn't just BUY something like that though, right? I should talk to my ped first? My biggest concern with anything is that Xander will scratch at his face, get whatever I put on him on his hands, and then suck his fingers!

@edelweiss: Yeah, you're right, I should call them! I guess I just haven't yet because I was JUST there and they didn't suggest anything besides the Aquaphor and Eucerin. But now that I've been trying it and it's not helping, I need something else!

i think this definitely warrants a call to the pediatrician to see if you can get a prescription--sounds like you've tried everything and your LO is clearly not happy! i'm sorry, it must be so hard to see him all itchy, poor little thing.

@Adira: I was going to recommend hydrocortizone. We used it for one rough patch we couldn't get rid of but I put some on his forehead bc he was constantly scratching deep cuts in it and it totally eliminated the issue for us!

@cmomma17: Maybe I should call my pediatrician and see if I can get a prescription for something. When she saw him at 4 months, she just told us it was eczema and suggested Aquaphor (an ointment) or Eucerin (a cream). I was using Aquaphor pretty religiously and I THOUGHT it was getting better, but he's clearly still VERY itchy. When I picked him up from daycare yesterday, he had these HUGE cuts on his face from scratching himself (I've since cut his nails as far down as I could)! I feel so bad, he's clearly so uncomfortable. :(

I feel like we have so much in common! C is an ezcema baby too! He's three months today and we have tried every lotion out there including aquaphir most recently. I did learn that "lotion" has the most water content and is least moisturizing, followed by cream, and then ointment. Aquaphor is an ointment.
Our ped said C had ezcema at our two month appointment. He said to call if it got worse and it did. I don't think he's itchy, but he's so dry, flaky, and had awful red patches. He gets little skin flakes that get in his eyes and then his eyes water, poor babe. :(
We called the ped two days ago and got a prescription cream over the phone. It's hydrocortisone. I think it is making a difference. He's still dry though so I'm using the prescription cream plus aquaphir and Vaseline for the area over his eyes.

Xander has ezcema and it's REALLY itchy. He's been scratching at his face non-stop to the point that he's gotten some deep cuts on his forehead and scalp and even some decent scratches on his legs. I've been trying to coat him in Aquaphor, Eucerin, and/or Jojoba Oil (the closest I could find to coconut oil) and while his skin kind of looks better, it apparently hasn't helped with the itchiness, because he's still scratching like crazy.

Is there anything I can put on him to help with the itching? He's only 4.5 months. I've tried the Aveeno Eczema Therapy Moisturizing Cream, but he's allergic. Anyone have any suggestions? I'm desperate to help my baby!
