D went through this. By the time the season was over and spring was here, he still insisted on wearing a hat. You just can't win!

Yup - DS is almost 14 months and I just use a hood because he pulls everything else off (still can't figure out how to get the hood off! Lol )

Although I did find this super soft tuque at the Gap the other day and for some reason he's ok with that one. I have yet to solve the mitten problem - but a friend suggested putting hair elastics over so they can't pull them off.

Stubborn little guys. No sense if personal safety at all! It's freezing here and I worry about frostbite.

Now if you find a hat/gloves DH won't pull off - I'm looking for those suggestions too haha

D doesn't like hats, but the last couple times we've gone out in the cold he's been wearing a jacket with a hood and hasn't protested DH putting the hood up.

I was going to suggest a hat that velcro's under his chin but that was already suggested. If you're just going in and out quick maybe you can just hold something over his head until you go inside. Or maybe he'll realize a hat is actually a good idea after feeling the cold. ;)

I just warm the car up and cover her in a blanket. I don't think anything will happen from 10 seconds of a little cold exposure. She overheats in te car easily so I wouldn't leave a hat on her in there anyways.

Ugh. We have been having this struggle with mitts. He WILL NOT keep them on his hands. I've tried velcroing them OVER his jacket and that doesn't even stop him.

I find if I can distract LO whilst/straight after the hat goes on, he is inclined to forget it is on his head! Same with socks which he likes to remove and hide all over the flat!

I'm with Blackbird. For just going from the house to the car and the car to daycare, I wouldn't worry about it. Sometimes you have to pick your battles and your LO really isn't going to get that cold in that short amount of time.

But then again, I'm also like Blackbird in that I'll wear flats with no socks in the winter and it is rare to see me in a hat (unless I'm going snow skiing).

I pick my battles, when DD would pull her hat off last year (around 1 year old) I was like "that's fine, but mommy is carrying you in and you have to wear a blanket over your head" she would cry but the option was a blanket to protect from wind or the hat. Eventually she would keep the hat on!

@blackbird: ha! yes, I suppose so :) I do see people with no socks on when it's below freezing and I wonder "HOW ARE THEIR FEET STILL ATTACHED?!" (all caps because I really do yell at those people in my car :P) We all do have different body temperatures or tolerances for cold, don't we?

@Canoli: I'm sure it's only going to get more interesting as the years go by...2 out of 3 is great! :)

We go through this stage every change of season with my 3 year old. This week he agreed to hat and warmer coat but no gloves. I figure 2 out of 3'isn't bad. Toddlers are soooooo stubborn!

@Pumuckl: Yeah, the age difference might hinder him from having a real interest in doing it himself just yet. But that's good advice too. Thank you!

@Mrs. Bee: He does seem to be reacting to Elmo in a few books I have with him in it. That's a good idea. Thanks!

@blackbird: I do figure the time that he is outside isn't THAT long (house to the car...car to daycare). But I'm trying to remember he is a little human. And if I went outside this morning without a hat, I would have been cold and angry. I'm just trying to help the little guy out! :) And to plan for when it's really winter! This is just the beginning of the cold.

Eh, then he'll be cold? I mean....the other options are anything with velcro to keep it on!

Then again, it was 24 degrees today, and E didn't wear socks and shoes, so I carried her into daycare in a long sleeved shirt and pants, no jacket, and nothing on her feet. A 10 step walk isn't going a big deal :)

@sweetooth: oh and what I noticed is that if he puts the hat on himself or at least "helps" me put it on the likelihood of it staying on increases as well. He's 19m old though...

@Pumuckl: I have noticed that the cold is affecting him when we go outside. Maybe after a few more of these cold mornings he'll listen. :) Maybe :)

@PinkElephant: That's a great idea. Maybe I'll look for one like that. I don't know why I thought a winter hat would be different. He hates anything on his head.

I'm sure I'll have to enforce some rules like that as time goes on.

For mine feeling the cold outside really helped. He'd always take his hat of but once he realized (and we pointed it out to him) that having cold ears etc. isn't so nice the hat is staying on.

FX it'll get better. :goodluck:

Do you have one that snaps under the chin? They're harder to get off.

My toddler loves taking off her mittens...if we are doing something fun I just make a rule that after x times, we go home. For places we have to go, I just keep putting them back on.

It has dropped below freezing here in the morning and I'm doing my best to bundle up my little 1 year old in the mornings. But he absolutely REFUSES to wear his hat! I put it on, he rips it right off. I put it back on, and it's off and on the floor again. So I just hold him close and quickly run to the car. I know it's only going to get colder as we move in to winter, any tips for keeping my little guy warm and healthy? I know a hood is an option, but right now we're also battling trying to get him in the carseat and having a difficult time with his hooded winter coat on. I had hoped a hat would work!

Any tips from parents that have been through winters with their little ones who hate hats?
