@Leialou: I think he was a little upset, because there really wasn't anything we could do last night. But still, I was a wreck! I really don't think he cared too much.

Man, that sucks! I probably would have made my husband come home too.

During our inspections they found evidence of prior termites. We decided to still purchase the home because there was no active infestation, and the seller fixed the damage. Well a few months later I was peeling wallpaper in our dining room and I found more termite damage behind it, much worse than what had been already repaired. We had to have it fixed.

@Mrs. Sunglasses: my parents had this same problem! Except the leak from the shower was dripping into their finished basement, onto their brand new pool table!

@ladyfingers: Yikes!!! so gross about the dead animals! I can only imagine what that would smell likes....ewww... But hey as long as you are still happy that's all that counts! Well, and that the house is at least in livable condition!

Oh no! We had our walkthrough and realized there was a dead animal under the house, and when we had somebody out to dispose of it they pointed out the 15 breezeway entrances all around our crawlspace and numerous other unsealed entrances all around the house for vermin to crawl in under our house and into our attic and our walls and die. So we had to spend $1200 to get everything sealed off with mesh, etc. Then we moved in and there were a million gargantuan flies all over, probably from whatever had last died in the house. There is no dryer vent and no place FOR a dryer vent due to an addition the flippers put on the house, so we're currently venting out dryer into an indoor dryer kit that creates hot humid air all up in our garage. We're having a contractor out this weekend to see if there's anything we can do but even if there is, it will cost a million dollars. And when we bought our electric garage door opener they discovered the garage door had been put on completely incorrectly so it cost us another $400 in addition to the opener to fix. That and a persistent leak under our kitchen sink, a phantom leak under our dishwasher, and numerous shitty jobs done all around the house (crooked switchplates, a crooked front door that I can't fix that lets hot air in through a 1/4 inch crack on the bottom third of our left doorframe, loose kitchen and bathroom sink faucets) makes for a very joyful homeownership! But we still love out house :)

I hope your roof proves to be simple and cheap to fix for now!!

oh no that's crappy! hope it won't be expensive to fix. Well when we came in our house, we changed the shower head and the shower started leaking in the basement. We realized that the shower doors weren't sealed properly (but with the old shower head, water wouldn't reach there)

Oh the joys!!!

@jessiejo17: I know! And what really kills me (with the inspector) is that it was leaking back in the crawl space in our attic, he was up there, I saw him! Annnddd My husband crawled back there last night, and there was a bucket in there already where the leak was. So you’re telling me, this inspector saw the bucket and didn’t say a word about it?! Ugh!

But yes, we are very thankful for rain, it was a pretty good steady rain all last night too, and once we got the bucket repositioned to catch the water the leaking stopped. Then we could enjoy the rain! I hope you guys get some rain in Nebraska!!

Oh my gosh! I can't believe they didn't catch that in the inspection when you bought your house, I would be a little peeved at that! Luckily your DH can fix it and save on that cost for now!

And YAY for rain, we are in desperate need here in Nebraska, send some over if you can :)

@Alivoo01: Yea hopefully we will only need to buy materials. But it just stinks because I was planning on taking classes this fall, but with the roof, that will deplete our savings.....boo..

What a bummer about all the cat pee.....they can be pretty destructive

Uh I'm sorry!! Hopefully hubs can fix it easily!

About three months after we bought our house we got a HUGE water bill. Like over 5 times what it should have been. So we knew we had a leak but we didn't know where. Turns out it was under the concrete slab in our kitchen! They had to rip out half the kitchen, drill through the slab and replace the pipe. It was such an ordeal and really upset me. But thank God homeowner's insurance covered everything. I heart Farm Bureau : )

We had to fix our sky lights because they were leaking. We also had a small leak but that was just because leafs were piled up in one spot and let the water soak in instead of running off.

Oh man. That sucks major! Thankfully, your hubby has some roofing experience so that'll save you major moola!

When we bought our home, the previous homeowners apparently owned a lot of cats. Well, those cats didn't always use the litter boxes for bodily functions and went all over the house and on the shelves around the garage. So the first thing we had to do was remove all the carpet, remove and replace drywall along the edges, and install new carpet. For the garage, we had to completely remove and reinstall all the insulation and drywall (including some posts because the urine had soaked through that badly in some spots) and purchase ammonia removing stuff to scrub down the garage flooring.

Oh man that stinks! I remember that happening to us no long after my mom bought her house. My room wasn't ready in time before we moved it, but it ended up being a blessing in disguise. Not having flooring in my room meant we were able to spot a huge leak.

So sorry you'll have to buy a new roof already, they are so stinking expensive!

We just bought our house under 2 months ago, and we couldn't be happier! We have been in a bad draught here, so this rain is great.

So I'm standing in our kitchen doing dishes, and I hear a tapping noise, I look at the floor, and it's wet. So I look up, the kitchen ceiling is dripping! The paint is bubbling up, and water is steadily dripping down. DH is out to dinner with his guy friends, and I panicked! I'm thinking the worst, great our ceiling is going to cave in! I called my husband crying.....come home!! He rushes home, goes in our attic, go figure we have a huge leak in our roof! Ugh! Thank goodness for buckets right now.

DH has roofing experience so hopefully this weekend he can fix this. But now it looks like we will be needing a new roof a lot sooner than we expected. There goes our savings!

Any one else have an "joys of homeownership" stories to share?
