I've been putting my guy down lately in his crib still awake then giving him a bottle (of breastmilk ) until he falls asleep. To avoid the same issue of waking up when I transfer him...

@Mrs.Someone: Unfortunately, he doesn't like the pacifier. I've tried putting it in before him falling asleep and he just looks at me in disgust. I wait 15-20 minutes, but he wakes up shortly after so DH holds him for an hour.

@MOMTOLITTLEB: Yep, i've tried that. i'll put him down and if he wakes up i bring the rocker next to him and shush pat him for 15 minutes. He escalates into wails really quickly.

@Anagram: Yep, i'll try shush patting before he falls asleep, after he falls asleep, after he starts crying, ughh...

@blackbird: Swaddled in the miracle blanket with a sleep sack over it (he's too big so we just use the miracle blanket to swaddle his arms). We just switched to a "Love to Dream" swaddle but i'm not sure it's helping.

@Foodnerd81: I may have to try that, or even a warm water bottle. We did CIO with DD at 4.5 months, but she was already using her fingers to self-soothe by then. We spend 3 hours a night on bedtime, and it's been so hard on everyone.

@Foodnerd81: Mine's exactly like yours! I have to wait 10-20 min after she falls asleep to put her down, and even then it's a hit or miss!

We had a very similar experience. For a while we would wait until she was really really asleep- like 15 minutes minimum after she seemed asleep- to put her down. But sometimes even then she would wake up and we would both cry. Like your Lo, patting and shushing while she was in the crib just made her more upset. Is the bed cold when you put him down? Maybe a warm receiving blanket tucked tightly around the mattress would help? The LC in my hospital suggested having it tucked under your shirt while you nurse then ticking it in the crib before you put baby down but I think you would need your so's help to get it safe and tight.

Eventually we had to do some CIO at bedtime. It was really hard (on me) because she was so young, but she was actually crying less overall because she was getting so upset before.

Is he swaddled when you put him down? Maybe that'd help him feel like he's being "held"

Try putting him down and then shush-patting him. My LO always responded to pats on the butt (she was a side sleeper) and prior to the side sleeping, I had to rub her tummy.

I think they do sense when you are putting them down, so don't wait till your LO falls asleep and then try to creep him into bed, just put him down in the crib as soon as he's drowsy and either shush-pat or pat, or sing a lullaby and pat. We used to have to do that a full 5 minutes or so for our LO to sleep (which is an eternity when you are hanging over a crib!), but 5 minutes is better than 2 hours.

I know you said as soon as you put him down but is it really instantly? My son used to cry after a few minutes and for some reason it helped if I'd sit next to the crib for 15 minutes or so. I had been rushing out of the room so I didn't disturb him but I guess he sensed me there and it helped him settle in.

Have you tried putting him down with a paci? Or try holding him for 10mins while asleep so he gets deeper?

Have you tried comforting him in the crib until he falls asleep instead of fully picking him up? Shushing, patting his back, etc.

DS is 14 weeks old, and nighttime sleep has been a nightmare the last two weeks. I'll give him a bath, nurse him, then turn on the white noise machine and hold him until he falls asleep (usually takes 2 minutes). As soon as i transfer him to the crib, he wakes up crying and i have to pick him up and repeat the process...usually taking over 2 hours.

I've tried making sure he falls asleep within 2 hours of waking up from his last nap, then 1.5 hours. He doesn't protest falling asleep. Putting him in the crib sleepy does not work. Letting him fuss doesn't work (his cries escalate very quickly). Did anyone else go through around this time? We went through this with DD, but it happened at the 4.5 month mark and we used modified CIO.
