You might not gain that much more even if you didn't diet...I had gained probably like 35 pounds by the time I was 30 weeks and was pretty worried about it, but then it just stopped! I went on to gain only 5-7 more pounds for a total of 42. I didn't diet at all and had ice cream regularly. I did exercise throughout my pregnancy and was an avid runner pre-preg. It doesn't sound like you were overweight prior to pregnancy and the recommended gain is 25-35 so I wouldn't stress over it too much! Eat somewhat healthy perhaps but not fruit and veg only! The end of pregnancy is bad enough without torturing yourself

I was getting really bummed about my weight gain, but have decided that it just is what it is. I'm trying to eat as well as I can and move as much as I can... end of story. I'm up about 22 lbs right now at 25.5 weeks. I see a group practice and none of the doctors have said anything to me about my weight. When I've asked about it specifically, they tell me not to worry, everything looks good... so, I'm trying to be okay with that!

Try not to let it upset you, dear. Sounds like you are doing great!!!

@TurtleDoves: At 12 weeks, i had a doctor tell me i was only allowes to gain 15lbs. My daughter was 10 1/2 lbs on her own! I gained close to 60 but 5 months later, ive lost it with no effort. Your doctor is nuts. Just continue to make healthy choices, you dont need to subsist on fruits and veggies.

That is crazy! You already are making healthy food choices. If you are watching what you eat and not going crazy with treats, then your body will tell you what you need. I gained about 35 pounds after being told I should only gain 15 to 20. Granted I was craving bagels like no ones business, and I had to limit my carbs more, but I was totally healthy. No gestational diabetes and I had a very healthy 10lb9oz baby. Exercise is really good for you, so I think walking more is a good recommendation. It will also help baby move down as you get farther along. Don't take your ob too seriously abou the diet. Every pregnant woman's body is different. How you gain and carry the weight varies a lot too. The stress over all this is probably worse than gaining another 5 lbs.

Frankly, your OB sounds like a huge jerk. I had one too, who told me at the beginning that once I gained 25 lbs, she would start calling be chubby wubby. Um, harsh?

I'm your size, and I gained 30-31ish lbs with my pregnancy, and not only was my LO wonderfully healthy, I lost it all pretty fast and easy. Just don't live on a cupcake-a-day-diet, and you will be just fine! Feel good!!

@TurtleDoves: Then don't go on the diet. Honestly, I am lighter now than I have been at some points in my life, though I am not at my pre-preg weight. My clinic wanted me to gain 25 pounds. I gained over 43... and now I have 10 to go.
I couldn't diet--I just continued to eat my normal, healthy food. And you know what? I'm really glad I did!

Tonight I had a verrry low fat chili with beans and super lean ground turkey instead of beef and a green iced tea. I think I'm doin OK:)

Im sorry but that just seems like BS! UNless you have had health problems of some kind I do not see why she would be so nuts about this. I have gained 50 pounds and my doctor, who graduated Harvard medical school and is super health conscious is not concerned. Eat the veggies too but i wouldnt go on a diet right now, at such a critical time for baby you require protein and iron for his brain. she sounds like one of those pain in the ass stickler by the book types.

I gained 50+lbs when I was pregnant with LO. :P Probably not a good idea to gain as much as I did (haha), but eat when you're hungry, try to eat healthy, and walk when you can.

@TurtleDoves: This is insane. For your healthy baby, you should eat as much healthy food (including the grains and proteins you are talking about) as you need. I also liked to have a treat every now and then because I said that I wanted my baby to be able to appreciate goodies too. (jokingly)

My doctor doesn't mention weight to any of his patients. If someone asks, he just says if you gain more, then you'll have to diet more after the baby and it's up to you. We ladies drive ourself crazy enough about weight.

In pregnancy, people gain differently. I gained most of my weight in first trimester, but by the end had gained the standard 25 pounds.

I have a Gaia Pregnancy Yoga video, and the yoga chick on there talked about how she gained 50 pounds or something like that, and that it all dropped off no problem after pregnancy. She said she felt healthy and that was what her body wanted.

I have another friend who gained a dreaded 80 pounds, and she is still working to get that off 4 years later.

Everyone is different.

You, my dear, seem to be right on track, even by typical standards. And I agree that your OB doesn't know how much you weighed pre-pregnancy....and I am shocked that she would suggest what she has suggested.

If you are concerned about weight, do use the online tools and input that pre-preg weight that you do know is for sure. And if you feel like you are gaining a little faster than YOU are comfortable with, then walk more and don't have the cupcake.

It's your body and your baby.

I don't think it's ever right to "diet" while pregnant. The truth is most people cannot get full on fruits/veggies alone. They need protein, meat, nuts, dairy. I think that it all healthy NEEDED food! I can understand giving up grains or desserts but yeah that sounds crazy.

Take it with a grain of salt. I gained 35 lbs and my mw never said anything about my weight!

I was 116 when I got pregnant and was 186 when I gave birth. Every woman is different and her body has different needs. I went 11 days overdue and have a super healthy happy baby who was 7lbs13 at birth. Don't even listen to that. Stay active. Eat healthy foods. You'll gain exactly the amount of weight your baby needs you too :)

You will probably still put on those 5 pounds, even if you watch what you eat religiously. I would probably drop the oatmeal and rice, and try to get a little more exercise, but otherwise, eat lots of fruits and veggies, grilled meats, and avoid that cupcake ;) Her telling you to "try to stick to fruits and vegetables" just means to make that the bulk of your intake.

Most everyone I know who gained too much weight is still fighting it off. Just eat mindfully and you'll be ok!

I had an OB tell me that when I was 8 weeks along... I switched OBs. I know that's not an option for you.

You know your body better than any doctor. Yes, they deal w/ babies all the time, but you are the mother. From what it sounds like, you're eating just fine. I was 5'4" 135 lbs pre-pregnancy (athletic) and I gained 37 lbs (that's w/ exercising all the way through!). You do what you feel is right and take her advice with a grain of salt. Your body will gain the weight that it needs, no matter how few or how many veggies you eat.

Your body knows what is right for your body. Eating only fruits and vegetables is actually a really bad idea. You still need protein, fat, and carbs.
I put on "too much" weight and now I have to lose it while caring for the baby but it was worth it. I hated every minute of pregnancy and going on a diet would have sent me over the edge.

That's crazy!! Normal weight gain is 25-35 lbs for people like you who start off at a healthy weight. So you still have six more pounds to gain before you hit the top of that range! Obviously it's best to eat as healthy as possible but you need proteins and whole grains in addition to fruits and veggies!
