I gained 35 lbs, but I had gestational diabetes so I had to curtail my sweets and carb consumption. If I didn't, I probably would have gained way more than 35. But everybody is different and I was told as long as I was eating relatively healthy and baby was growing appropriately, not to worry.

@grizz: Oh and I HATED outweighing my husband! Even post-pregnancy I weighed more than him for quite a while. I am now happily 15 pounds lighter than him again....he's not a big guy :)

I was in the same boat in my pregnancy. For me, the weight gain tapered off at the end and I ended up like 42 lbs total, I think. When all was said and done, I put a conscious effort into getting back into shape (nothing extreme, but ate well and exercised 3-4 times/week) and the weight came off. I was at my pre-pregnancy weight by 4 months post-partum and am actually down a few lbs from pre-preg now (at 6.5 months). And was a normal BMI pre-preg (for reference) too. Anyway, this is just to make you feel a little better. Don't stress too much :)

Oh dear. Me too. I'm about 26 weeks and I'm up 32 lbs. I'm 5'10" and started out 155, so I'm getting too close for comfort to 200. My original goal was to stay under 185... well I've passed that. So now it's 200.

I blame it on the carbs. I was morning sick from week 6 to week 18, and the only thing that made me feel OK was to eat carbs pretty much constantly -- crackers, french fries, mild cheese, peanut butter. I normally eat a lot less than that (calorie-wise), but I felt like I had 2 modes:

Sick
or
Eating Carbs

Even though I made the conscious choice that I knew was going to affect my weight, I still feel awful about the gain. I don't feel like a cute pregnant lady - have back fat, jiggly arms, thigh-rub, stretch marks, yadda yadda.

But you know what? Oh well. The weight will come off through returning to normal activity levels after baby. And from this point forward, though we can't DIET (and shouldn't), we can be more watchful of our weight. You can't really help but gain at this point - baby is growing after all. But just trying to not eat that 2nd cookie, or choose mustard instead of mayo, etc... at least then you know you aren't adding excessive weight for no reason.

To put it in perspective, i put on 25 lbs between weeks 8 and 20. I've only put on another 7 in the last 6 weeks, which is a much better rate.

Oh, I'm going to gain a ton. In my first trimester, I was hardly eating because of nausea, but every single time I stepped on the scale (about every other day), I would be up a pound or TWO from the last time. I freaked out so much, I started tracking my calories. One day, I ate 700 cals all day (from nausea, not a diet), the next I managed 1000, and then back to 800 the third day.

On that third day, I was up a lb from before. Go figure. My doctor was like, you need to slow down the rate of your gaining. I showed her my food diary and just said--great! Tell me how!

Other than exercise (I couldn't with 24/7 nausea), there was nothing else she could tell me.

Anyway, now in the second tri, my gain rate has finally slowed down, but I'm still gaining! I also worked out 3 times in the last 4 days, watched what I ate...and gained two lbs this week.

So yup. I'm starting to agree that your body is going to do what it's going to do.

I was up 36lbs last week at almost 36 weeks. The OB nurse wanted me to gain 25-35, so I am thinking I am going to be at least 40lbs. I was hoping to stay under 40, but we will see at this point. A lot of my friends gained 50lbs with their first, so I am happy that I am doing better then they did, at least so far!

I also gained the most in the second trimester and freaked about my potential total weight gain. And then I gained very little in the third...but baby continued to measure on target, so they told me not to worry. I'm 5'4" and 120 pre-preg. Gained about 30 total.

Agree with @Revel that you have to accept a lot of it is outside of your control! Do what you can within your control, which you are - exercise and eat healthy - then accept that whatever happens, happens. Your BMI was on the low end to start so chances are you'd gain more than 25 lbs! I'm sure it'll come off afterward because you've been active. Hang in there, your body is smarter than you think :)

(I am 5'4" and was 119 to start and am up around 18 lbs at 26 weeks.. so also not expecting to hit the magical 25 lb number - I get the panic!)

@grizz: I think you are doing just fine! My midwife recommended up to a 40 pound weight gain if you start at a healthy pre-pregnancy weight. I think if you are active and eating well, your body will know what to do.

I will be 26 weeks on Saturday and am up 27 pounds so I am pretty much in the same boat.

I'm 32 weeks and refuse to know my weight anymore. I just seriously could not handle that number climbing! I've already vowed not to get back on the scale until 6 wks postpartum.

Yeah I'm at 18 pounds @ 20 weeks, so I really feel ya. It doesn't seem to matter if I eat good or bad, work out or not. So... I figure I'm just going to gain about 40 and as long as baby is happy, it's ok by me. I also have NO IDEA where the 18 pounds are, because everything still fits fine and I don't think I look much heavier! Weird!!

I think your body gains what it gains. So unless you're eating a diet comprised exclusively of several slices of chocolate cake/day I wouldn't worry :)

I've gained 30 lbs at 33 weeks. My midwife said she is far more concerned with women who don't gain enough than those who gain "too much" (as determined by the medical model). We're all different and so long as you're eating healthy and doing what you can to stay active that's all you can do.

I was only supposed to gain 15-20 lbs because I was overweight to begin with. I was perfectly on track the first and second trimesters. And then in the third trimester alone, I gained FOURTY pounds. By the time I delivered I had gained 50 lbs total.

But those 40 lbs came off quicker than they came on. They were gone in the first 2 weeks.

I can't really give you any advice, but I was also only supposed to gain 25 lbs and I'm at 37 lbs now (38 weeks), so I'm expecting to hit 40+ before the baby is born!

Some say that the weight gain slows down in the 3rd trimester, so hopefully that is true for you! It WASN'T true for me (if anything, I gained MORE in the 3rd trimester), but hopefully it's true for you. All you can do is just keep doing what you're doing - making healthy choices.

Well, I can sympathize with you - I was hoping to gain about 30 and I'm on target for probably 40, just like you. I was at 22 lbs at my 24w checkup, and I've been gaining about 5 every 4 weeks since 16 weeks, so I expect to be at around 27lbs at 28 weeks.

FWIW, my doctors didn't say 25 lbs for me, they said 25 to 35 lbs, and I started heavier than you - 5'6" and 140lbs.

I just try to remind myself that other than not totally gorging, I don't think we have a lot of control over weight gain in pregnancy - I think the body is going to do what it wants. I am exercising 4x a week, walk a lot, and not eating TOO many sweets, so I'm trying to just be at peace with it. Harder some days than others though.

The only tactic I am trying to implementing right now is to eat a smaller dinner, and then maybe a snack later if I need it, because a large meal at dinner makes me feel so gross all night.

Right around the same time as you I gained 6 or 7 lbs in just 4 weeks - the second trimester I gained the most for sure! As I got closer to the end I stopped gaining and even lost a pound or two towards the end (which was shocking because I was eating A TON)... so you might just be in the midst of that second trimester gain that I feel like a lot of preggos deal with! i wouldn't worry too much... it should level out! I got a little concerned but just went with it & it worked out! i tried to do a little more walking when I could, but ate as much as i wanted.

I gained about 40 pounds... So I feel you. I get severe migraines so I spent over half of my pregnancy on the couch, no exercise. Not even walking out of the house. Just to pee. Add that with constant hunger..... Yes I'm going to gain a lot of weight! To make matters worse my obs always yelled at me about it like I didn't know and like I could help it. It was a bad time in my life.

Can't tell you anything that will make you feel better, but I was exactly where you are at 25 weeks. :) And it didn't matter if I ate junk or super healthy and clean, I still gained every.single.week. (We have similar stats-I am 5'7 and 130-135 when I got my BFP).

I hopped on the scale this morning and pretty much got the shock of my life. 25 pounds. 26 weeks. I don't know what else to do. I exercise, I eat really clean and healthy. WTF.

Did you gain over the recommended amount? Given that I have 14 weeks to go, I'm guessing I will be in the 40-45 lb department, maybe 50. I started at 5'6 & 130 lbs. Is there anything I can do? I'm at the stage now where I know I'm supposed to be gaining 1 lb a week, so I'm at peace with that. Whatever keeps the little guy happy, healthy, and growing. Just sucks that I gained a pound a week my entire pregnancy so far too! Is there anyone who can sympathize? Or tell me anything that will make me feel better? :)
