We are going through this right now.... but with LO being just 7 months old (6 teeth...fml) I don't think he understands yet. So I don't know how to handle it. He bit me a few weeks ago.... but it was quick... and it was almost like he just absentmindedly bit down.... but this week, every time he latches on the left side, he bites. And it hurts! Sometimes I can't help but yelp!

We've started saying "no" when he tries to chew/grab things he is not supposed to, so I tried to tell him "no" when he bit me... but I could tell he definitely didn't understand. I guess I'll just "grin and bear it" for now.

as R's first tooth breaks through, i'm nervous about this! i can feel her latch change a bit, so i'm hoping she's adjusting!

Biting comes and goes for us, A tends to do it more during her snack sessions rather than full feedings.

When A bites I unlatch her, put her in the cot and walk away for a few minutes, I also try to wait till she's definitely hungry before feeding her.

I hope it's just a phase, LO never bit me hard but she did go through a small phase. I started getting my finger ready if she would slow down nursing or show any signs of getting ready to bite I'd break her latch with my finger and either switch sides or just give her something else to do for awhile. Sometimes she'd get pissed and want to keep nursing so we'd continue but other times she'd get pissed because she wanted to bite, so I just let her cry for a bit then. She was 15 months or so at that point so old enough to know better. Luckily it didn't last for long.

It was a phase for us. He did it for a couple of weeks, but never bit too hard, and then stopped. I'm not really sure what I did to make him stop. He still will occasionally. I usually just say "ok, you're done" and we end the nursing session.

I hope it's just a phase for you!

My LO thought it was a game when I said no. She would bite/drag her teeth off look at me and shake her head. terrible! I stopped saying no and took her off made no eye contact and put her off to the side. The hardest part was not yelping in reaction to her biting. It got better.

for some reason, i never thought i would have to deal with this, to this extent anyway. L has bitten me before, but he has done it more than ever this week and it makes nursing a little stressful!! And i wasn't planning to wean him anytime soon.

When he has done it in the past, i followed the advice of firmly saying "no" and not letting him nurse immediately. Well, now he seems to do it more when i say that. In fact, he sometimes laughs and gets a devilish look in his eye, I kid you not! So i googled for more advice. On the kellymom site, it says not to be firm, because that reaction could be reinforcing - which seems to be the case with L. And after closely examining when he bites the most, I have found that he seems to do it more frequently and forcefully when i am react loudly. Loudly meaning me yelling in pain (which i am working on controlling) or by saying "no" in a firm voice. So now I gently say "oh are you done nursing? because if you bite, it means you don't want to nurse to anymore" and i i give him his paci for something else to suck/chew on for a minute or so. If i feel he has drank an adequate amount, we may stop nursing altogether. However, more it often it seems to mean he needs a short break or to switch sides.

My gentler approach seems to be working as he is not biting as forcefully or as frequently (today at least). But it's still been happening daily.

I am just wondering who else has dealt with this and if it stops completely after a while? *I hope*
