We went to a birthday party knowing they were going to have to get everything home from the venue so we bought a book and gift card.

I think a gift card and maybe a little onesie would be perfect! Everyone loves gift cards!

I had a shower like this, and I was so grateful to people who shipped the gift. I would give something small (like maybe your LO's fave book, or a tube of lanolin if you were shipping a boppy) to wrap with a picture of the "real" gift.

@wonderstruck: my bridal shower was in NYC and my MIL flew in for the shower. They were in GA at the time. Rather than bring the gift with her on the plane or ship to my mom's house then I drive back with it she shipped it direct to my house. I printed a picture of the gift and put it in a IKEA frame. haha It was cute. :) But everyone else brought physical gifts to the shower and we just brought back what we could in the car and saved the rest of the next trip back. Obviously a little different with a bridal shower because we didn't need everything immediately!

I had to deal with this for my wedding and what I wound up doing was returning a bunch of stuff and rebuying it when I got back. We drove so a lot fit with us but not everything and in the case of some fragile items it wasn't worth the risk. I like the idea of shipping something to their home and bringing something small for her to open plus a print out in the card.

@swurlygurl: Oh geez! Yes, nothing crazy like an infant tub, haha! And yeah, I'll be honest, I do kind of want her to have something to physically open, gift cards aren't as much fun, haha. But I'll ship something bigger to their home either way.

It's kind of extra complicated because they're planning on driving, but he is in the military and overseas right now - he should be home in time for the shower, but if that doesn't happen then I have a feeling she'll end up flying in. They're planning on him being there, but obviously military life can be fairly unpredictable.

My SIL had a shower where I live (Ontario), but she's from New York. Lots of people bought her gifts but it was a hassle for them to pack them all in her car and get them over the boarder. I bought her something from her registry and had it shipped to her place.

LOL! I'm in the same situation. My friend is driving home (MI) from VA for her shower next month. I think I'm going to send a diaper stash shipment to their house as my shower gift and add something to the card. ( I also have a box full of goodies that we didn't use with DS (that she wants) that I was going to ship to her, that I'm just going to bring her to the shower)

I also did the print out of a pic in a card for my bff who lives down the street, because it didn't make sense to lug around an exersaucer to two/three different places!

@lawbee11: I would do the same thing! Heck, I did that for local showers when I was pregnant because I didn't want to transport a big box and a toddler in my 3rd tri. :P

@wonderstruck: last time this happened I emailed the mom to be directly and asked her what she wanted me to do. I think I might've shipped the big gift direct to her house then brought the small fun gift with me to the shower.

I'd definitely check with her to see how she's travelling/if she's made any alternate plans. My sister-in-law had an out of town shower, but she had made plans with my dad (who has a van) to bring all the gifts when he came out to visit the following month.

I was in the position of being the out of town mom. I flew in, but packed a super empty suitcase because I figured I would need to bring home some smaller gifts. Um, someone gifted me the infant bathtub. It's something I wanted, and was very grateful to receive, but the logistics of getting that home were a little difficult! I made it work, but the smaller gifts were a lot easier ;)

I personally preferred opening the physical gifts, rather than opening a bunch of gift cards. I think my friends and family also enjoyed seeing me open their gifts more than shipping them to my house or getting me gift cards.

Ship to their house. Then give a card with a picture of the gift at the shower. Or just give a gift card.

I would ship to their house and print out what you got for them and stick it in the card. I usually also bring something small that they can open at the shower.

@wonderstruck: I would ship a gift to her house (and just print out the receipt or picture of the item and place it in a card), or I would give her a BRU gift card.

Do you just ship a gift to their home? Or would you go with something smaller they can get home with them fairly easily?

I'm attending a shower in a few weeks for friends of mine who live down south (we're in Michigan) and they're registered at Babies R Us, so I do have the ability to ship something straight to their home free of charge. I was thinking that I wanted to also bring something small to the shower for her to open, but since I've never had an out of state shower I guess I'm just not sure if that would be thoughtful or just kind of a pain for the parents-to-be to have more stuff to bring back home with them.

I was thinking about, for the smaller gift, just putting together a little gift package for her of helpful postpartum things, like breastfeeding pads and lanolin, plus things for the baby that she didn't register for but no one wants to have to run out and buy when you end up needing them - teething tablets, infant motrin, gripe water, saline spray, Nosefrida...stuff like that. Other than the breastfeeding pads none of that was on her registry, but it seems like stuff every mom would need. Or is it better to just get small registry items instead?

Sorry, I know I'm way over-analyzing this. I was the first of my group of friends to have a little one, so I've only been on the receiving end of shower gifts!
