@tequiero21: yes, I think you're right that chances are increased (by about 10 to 20 percent). I did read one study however suggesting that the spread is much smaller in blastocyst cycles.

@Pink Champagne: I don't think that's totally accurate. I know some people who implanted 2 and only got 1.... What if they implanted the one who didn't make it? They just increased their chance! Lol...

My friend who did IVF told me that her doctor told her that the only thing implanting two embryos does is increase your chances of having two babies- that it does not increase your chances of getting pregnant. I don't know how accurate that is, or if it's just her doctors opinion, but I found that interesting and logical.
Best of luck to you with your process!!

Thanks again lovely ladies for all of your helpful advice. The transfer was today, and we had a change of heart. Here is what I posted on the infertility thread, and I thought I would share since I promised I would keep you updated:

At our transfer today, the doctor walked in and said we needed to transfer two since the embryos were of average quality. We immediately pushed back, and she admitted that this would only raise our chances by 10% but, if pregnancy resulted, we would have a 30% chance of twins. Also, the success rates of transferring one in a fresh cycle followed by one in a frozen cycle are about equal, and we are lucky to be able to afford additional frozen cycles. I would LOVE healthy twins, but my anxiety issues would cause me to be a nervous wreck throughout the pregnancy or if, god forbid, something went wrong. So after a lot of soul-searching, I just don't think I have the personality to take on that risk, at least on our first IVF. I may well sing a different tune next time. Anyway, the doctor went back to the lab after our pushback and said that the two embryos had developed such that they were now of the highest quality (4AA) so she recommended just one. We froze the other one, and may be freezing more tomorrow. Fingers crossed!

For our IVF round 1 fresh cycle we transferred one and it was unsuccessful. The devastation was immeasurable. For our next round which was an FET I decided last minute to transfer two. I was terrified of having multiples...Well I currently have 2 beautiful girls.

I wasn't sure I could take the emotional devastation of transferring another single embryo knowing I had more than one to transfer. I did make the decision last minute.

My clinic didn't want to do more than 2 unless u had very specific problems and needed more to increase chances that 1 survived. We put in 2. My hubby was hoping 1 would make it. I didn't want to lose one. I got both. Uneventful pregnancy. These days, twins aren't a big deal, although we r still considered high risk. Biggest reason we wanted two was we didn't want to go thru the whole procedure and it didn't take. 2 would double our chances.

Good luck! So exciting!

@Sugar.Biscuit: while some doctors will transfer a bunch (look at octomom!) I think the average is 2 for under 35, maybe slightly more for over 35. I know my clinic the average is 1.8 for under 35, and the average # goes up as the age goes up - for over 42 it's 3.7

Ok i was surprised when I read most only transfered 1-3. I may be off on this but I'm pretty sure my SIL transfered 6 and only 1 took... she had a lot of health problems & cysts so that prob played a big factor in the amount transfered. Shes the only person I know IRL to have IVF I'm guessing her case was special?

Thank you ladies! Your thoughts are incredibly helpful. I think it will likely be a game time decision, but we are leaning strongly toward putting in two if we are lucky enough to have the opportunity. I will keep you updated. ER is scheduled for tomorrow and ET is scheduled for Friday.

We transferred two on our second round. Our first round, we tried one. That said, we did Attain, so we knew we had four more attempts in the "bank," as it were, should our second round fail.

The pregnancy was tough...I'm not going to lie. The "fourth trimester" (a.k.a. the first 12 weeks) was no walk in the park, either. But now? At four months? We're finally getting the hang of it. And, since we only ever wanted two babies, this is our dream come true. We get all the hard stuff over at once. Unfortunately, we only get to do the fun stuff once, too :-(

I say go for two. If you don't, you may always wonder, "what if?" And if you hit the jackpot, you'll be exhausted and poor, but happier than ever!

Wow, I didn't know about the risks of identical twinning in IVF. I was about to open my mouth and say that I'd be likely to transfer two in your position, but that's quite hard. On the other hand, your chances for a second will be even crummier in another few years. Yikes, such a tough call - good luck making it.

My sil transferred 2 but one split so she was pregnant with triplets. Of course it was very high risk, and unfortunately she ended up losing two of the babies. It was devastating.

Like others have said, just because you transfer two doesn't mean you won't get more than two.

I was ok with 2 and transferred 2 and ended up with 4. I never in my wildest dreams considered the risk of higher order multiples. Now I know that identicals are more common in IVF, especially with ICSI (which I also did). I strongly believe in eSet unless you have poor quality embryos or other female factors. I would talk about it in detail with your re. I kind of glossed over all of the infinitesimal risks because there were so many, but I don't wish my situation on anyone.

It seems horrible to have an IVF cycle fail, but in the long run, a couple of months wait for another cycle is nothing.

I transferred two embryos during my IVF cycle and did get pregnant with twins. But one of my babies did not make it due to vanishing twin syndrome. So now I'm 27 weeks pregnant with one baby. We were fine with the possibility of twins and I was very excited/shocked when we saw two sacs. I was devastated when we lost one baby.

I also based my decision on transferring two embryos on researching my RE's SART reports: http://www.sart.org/find_frm.html

This will give you statistics that might help you decide whether or not to transfer two embryos. Good luck!!

We transferred two (1st fresh ivf) last week. All along we knew we'd put in two & I honestly didn't have any qualms. Hopefully, two will increase our chances & honestly we'd be thrilled with twins at this point. We're not getting any younger & we've been trying for 4.5 years. Like @spaniellove mentioned, your feelings on selective reduction is also something to consider should an embryo split. This is another discussion DH & I discussed & came to some terms with. I honestly wish you guys the best of luck with whatever you choose! Hopefully, you'll get some good news in a couple weeks!

Do you know how you feel about selective reduction? We were very adamant with our RE that we only wanted one child and thus wanted to do eSET - they didn't push it but were relieved that we brought it up. In the end it might depend on the quality of your embryos and how your RE feels your chances are in general.

ETA: Our RE ended up strongly recommending that we transfer more than one because the situation wasn't ideal, so we transferred two.

I know it is such a tough choice and I wish you all the best with your decision and your cycle!!. I was also 34 while going through my cycles. We transferred one during our first cycle (fresh IVF) and I did not get pregnant, but I was sick with OHSS, so I know that had a lot to do with the failure. Then for our second cycle (frozen embryos) we transferred two and I am pregnant with one little girl. I was in a bit of a panic thinking about the possibility of twins but not wanting a bad outcome like the first time. Now, of course, I'm so thrilled that we chose 2 because we are so thankful to be pregnant. If we had chosen just 1, who knows... I did have high quality embryos for both transfers. We are also hoping to have two children, and will still probably transfer 2 the next time around since I'll be around 37 and have preliminarily decided that if twins happen, we'll be just fine ;).

One additional note: I also have a good friend who went through IVF about the same time I did (she's also 34). She transferred 2 and is also only pregnant with 1.

First, congrats on your progress so far. Welcome to 'the club.' I hope everything has been going well, no complications.

We did IUI+ injectibles. I had four mature follicles. The RE gave us three options: cancel the cycle, convert to IVF or go ahead with the IUI. Our chances for twins was 25%, triplets 10%. I ended up with a singleton. So even if you go with two, only one may implant. Like a pp said, it also depends on the quality of the embryos. Good luck!
