@AbbyCadabby: I agree. It's so expensive! And I really wish all states covered at least some of it. I live in Oregon, which is one of the most progressive states in the Union and we still don't have it!

It's crazy to me how much it costs and how many people pay for it out of pocket. I wish that all states mandated fertility coverage because I just don't know how we'll be able to afford it if we decide to go that route!

@spaniellove: I requested the paperwork but am still waiting to get it all. I hope I get it soon because we have a consultation with a clinic here in 2 weeks.

I live in NY state and my insurance covers 6 IUI's but no IVF stuff. We paid over $10 grand out of pocket for 2 cycles and meds.

@AbbyCadabby: I can understand why you'd be reluctant to spend more time/money on IUI. I kind of ruled it out from the beginning because it seemed like we had an MFI issue, and then it turned out my FSH was high and AMH was extremely low. So we did just the one IUI with injects just to test my response to the meds because if I was a poor responder IUI is a cheaper way to find out and my first IVF cycle could have a better outcome. It's not cheap by any means, but it could help you be successful with IVF. BTW, did you happen to get all of your records from your previous clinic?

@AbbyCadabby: I'm sorry you are going through this! I also live in a state where fertility coverage is not mandated and so we paid for IVF out-of-pocket. When you find a clinic to work with make sure you understand all your options in terms of payment and # of cycles included. We could have gotten a package (1 fresh IVF and 1 frozen) for a discount, but I was convinced I would get pregnant the first time around and didn't want to pay the extra up front. Unfortunately, my fresh cycle was not successful and we had to pay full-price for a frozen cycle (which luckily we were successful with) with $$ gifted from my parents. Before starting IVF, I thought that it was a sure thing first time around, but the honest truth is that docs don't know how you will respond to IVF meds (especially if you haven't done IUI with meds previously - which I had not). Even one IUI round night give the docs more info even if you do need to move onto IVF. I'd be happy to chat with you more about all of this. Feel free to let me know if you have questions. The financials of all of this still bug the heck out of me!

@Mrs.Someone: I'm definitely looking into some more natural/holistic treatments but right now I'm also trying to be realistic and consider all possible options.

@marionberry: The main reason we probably wouldn't try another IUI again is my age. At 39, IVF is much more effective. If we were still in NY, where our fertility coverage was covered, I would be more willing to try a couple more rounds of IUI but if we're going to be paying for everything out-of-pocket here, I'd rather not waste money doing something that is less likely to work only to have to then pay for the IVF eventually anyway.

I'm kicking myself for not being more aggressive while we still lived in NY. My insurance was great and covered up to $25,000 for fertility coverage. *sigh*

ICSI was an extra cost as was the cost of getting the sperm out. If you don't need this it should save you some. The base price was $8,000 for IVF but there are a number of earlier appointments and after appointments that aren't covered. Though, if you are pregnant the first 8 weeks should be covered. I had 3 ultrasounds we paid out of pocket for (we could have been reimbursed).

Because we paid out of pocket, we did deduct it out of taxes in that year. So that is an avenue of support.

We did IVF with ICSI and nothing was covered by insurance. It cost us about $20,000. We implanted 2 and got pregnant with one and he is now 20 months old. We also have 5 frozens to try. So it may be very successful.

I would recommend getting as much testing as you can done before. That is covered by insurance typically.

I think one of the things that helped us was our clinic. They have you come in every day for 2 weeks when you are actually cycling (taking all the injectibles) and blood tested me every morning. Every afternoon they changed the dosing for that evening and the next morning. One reason this was good for us is that I was going into hyperstim but they were able to call us in last minute and prep us for the trigger. If we weren't there, we would have had to cancel and start over.

Sorry, I have no experience with this. But what about trying natural means first, ie. Acupuncture and/or Chinese herbs? Much cheaper and they have a good success rate.

Is there any reason you wouldn't try another IUI again? It's much cheaper and they say it usually can take up to a few tries to work. Our RE is having us do 5 before IVF. If we get to that point, we will also have to pay out of pocket and would likely have to ask my parents for money in order to do it.

I'm sorry you're in this situation! We're in the middle of an IUI w/ injectibles cycle and are moving on to IVF right after this if it doesn't work. Although I live in a mandated coverage state (NJ), DH's employer is in PA so it's all out of pocket for us. My guess is that you want to make sure you find the most successful clinic for your situation. If your new clinic wants to do more testing before the IVF, that might be covered depending on your insurance...every little bit helps!

Does anyone have experience with doing IVF without insurance coverage? We're trying for #2 and have been trying for over a year now; I'm 39 and my husband is in his 40's so age is obviously a concern. We did one IUI about 7 months ago, which didn't work. We probably would've tried it again but moved from NY to FL right after.

Although we do have health insurance, I didn't realize until we moved here that fertility coverage isn't mandated in any way (unlike in NY) so nothing is covered. We're now considering looking into IVF but the out-of-pocket costs really freak me out, as does the fact that it might not even work anyway.

Any words of wisdom, advice or guidance would be greatly appreciated!
