Sorry I'm late, but I did ivf and had to go in like every other day for blood tests in the beginning. Then had to go in for monitoring, etc. you are very busy during the first trimester. I agree w pp, go do your trip and then start ivf....we did that. And now we have almost 1 year old twins....

Thank you to everyone who commented on this thread! It helps so much to hear from other women who've been through it. I've been sharing your comments with my DH, so we have a lot to think about!

I traveled early in the first trimester after IVF while on progesterone suppositories. It was a mess but totally do able. I was visiting family and was keeping it all secret so that was harder.

I remember feeling like I wanted to IVF NOW, THIS MINUTE. I could not wait. But in the long run, a few months is nothing. Take your trip to Europe, enjoy yourself, have a drink if you want because hopefully this will be the last big trip for awhile!

I agree that you totally "could" travel post IVF, but you wouldn't be able ot go to the appointments and I could not imagine travelling while on progesterone suppositories. Yuck. Shots would be different, but then you'd have to travel with a bunch of "stuff." (I don't know if PIO needs to be refrigerated.)

I agree with what the other ladies have said about continuing meds and appointments in the first tri.

Another angle....with IVF, hyperstimulation (OHSS) is a real possibility. If it is severe, you can end up in the hospital, though not many people get it severely. But I think many good responders end up with a mild case of it. Not terribly dangerous, but involves some discomfort, swelling, bloating, etc. that can take a few weeks to dissipate. Not really something I'd want to be dealing with on vacation.

My vote is to go before, relax and enjoy the trip, no holds barred, and come back and do your cycle. But I do know how much it sucks to wait! I had to delay my cycle 2 weeks and it was torture, lol!

I went through two fresh cycles and one frozen. I'll spare you the details of each cycle, but I will say that you should plan on weekly appointments until you are about 9 weeks. I had three beta's, and two ultrasounds and then I was released to the OB a little after 8 weeks. I did travel around 7 weeks, I was doing PIO injections but it wasn't a problem bringing all the meds on the plane. when we first started the IVF process I would say it took about three months from when we decided to do it to the beginning of meds, between all the pre-IVF testing, BCP's etc.

My friend traveled quite a bit (Europe included) when pregnant and she went through IVF. I think it all depends on the pediatrician.

some factors to consider when traveling right after an IVF cycle: 1) you might have to take certain medications (such as progesterone supplements) for as long as 10 weeks into your cycle, 2) you might have bad morning sickness throughout your first trimester (nausea, vomiting), 3) you'll might miss ultrasound/beta appointments, and 4) you'll be restricted from eating a lot of that yummy cheese and other unpasteurized foods in france/belgium if you're preggers (and no wine!)!!! not trying to discourage you or anything - just something to think about it.

I would wait. I didn't do IVF but I did injections plus IUI and I went back to my clinic every two weeks for ultrasounds until 12 weeks, when I was released. And while flying is considered safe, there are some minimal risks and to me, after the financial and emotional investment IVF takes, it wouldn't be worth it...But you should definitely ask your doctor!

I actually asked my doctor that question this morning during an ultrasound appt. I'm currently doing IVF and asked (should this cycle be successful which I'm obviously oh so hopeful) if there would be any restrictions for flying during the 1st trimester. She told me it would be perfectly fine. Just to stay hydrated and stand up/move around frequently to keep the blood flowing. Obviously there are many factors so be sure and ask your doctor before beginning anything. Good luck with whatever you guys decide : )

@spaniellove: Thanks for the info about your clinic! We are not at the point yet where we've committed to doing IVF so I haven't seen any information about post-IVF care. We are waiting for my next cycle to start (should be March 11) and then going from there (assuming I don't get a surprise/miracle BFP next week). I'll see if they can send me information about post-IVF to help make our decision, though! My husband is sort of pushing for us to wait until after the trip, which LOGICALLY I understand, but EMOTIONALLY I just don't want to do.

Have you been given a packet with information about what your clinic has planed for post-IVF care? It's possible you'll have to keep going back to your RE for betas and ultrasounds during that time and wouldn't want to be out of town. Every clinic has different policies, but for instance mine has us coming in for at least 2 betas a week from 4 weeks to 6 weeks, then an ultrasound at 6 weeks and 7 weeks and possibly 8 weeks. Would you consider doing your IVF cycle after your trip so you'll be nice and relaxed?

After our RE appointment last week, my husband and I have pretty much been discussing our options non-stop. We sat down last night to discuss the financial aspects of IVF and it's doable for us out of pockets. So one obstacle down!

Now we are waiting to figure out timing (which will be impacted on whether we decide to do lap surgery and some other factors like whether we can even get into the next two or three cycles my clinic offers, as they only take so many patients at a time). I'd prefer to start as soon as possible, but we do have a big trip planned this summer and my husband is really worried that we'll get pregnant and going on the trip will be too risky. (We're just going to France and Belgium, not anywhere unsafe, but he's worried about the flights mostly.) He would prefer to wait until after our trip, but of course I don't want to keep waiting and waiting! :)

Anyway, I'm wondering if anyone who's been through this has been cautioned away from international flights in the weeks after IVF? Depending on when we could start the cycle, it could be anywhere between 5-8 weeks after the cycle ends (hopefully with success!).

I know my doctor is the only one who can really answer these questions for me, but I would love to hear what other ladies experienced while I wait for my next appointment!
