In NY and we've always worn those Gap thin ones, or similar ones from Columbia/Patagonia and just layer fleece and what not under.

Ahh - I just realized I never replied - I'm awful at that habit of reading on my phone and not replying .... sorry!!

@bees_knees: I have heard good things about the costco one and my SIL is a member - I will have to check this out! The two zippers idea is intriguing!

@jennlin821: This is a good idea - I'll have to send my DH on a mission to a "cheapo" store or thrift store to check out what he can find - he is good at deal hunting like that. I like the idea of not having to worry about bringing it back and forth.

@Shantuck: Never heard of these - I'll have to check em out - thanks!!

@PinkElephant: oof...I'm tried reading this routine - haha... I'm totally a negative nelly at the moment (sorry!) but this seems rough - I'm picturing me and my 2 four year olds trying to zip jackets in the super cold outside the car (don't have a minivan) ... or in worse weather trying to carry backpacks/jackets/show&tell bag and hold hands in the parking lot....eeeek! I'm probably under estimating what we are capable of - but this intimidates me!!!!

We always did the three in one coats. On winter mornings when it’s -30, they don’t walk to the car in just a fleece. So whole coat on to walk to the car, unzip out of the puffy layer, leaving the fleece layer on, drive to daycare, put puffy layer back on before leaving the car, walk to daycare. It gets pretty fast with practice.

My kids get in the car carrying their coats/sit in their carseats without them, and put them on in the car before open the doors. Same thing in reverse coming home from school. I'm not sure the ages of your kids or the vehicle you drive - my solution is probably only feasible with a minivan or SUV (and obviously only with kids who manage their own outerwear).

But, if you want them to wear a coat in the carseat...for us the TNF Mossbud Swirl coats have worked for day-to-day wear. Eddie Bauer makes a similar soft-fleece lined coat that is less expensive. I agree that while the Patagonia down sweaters, and similar down coats made by TNF or Gap, are great carseat coats, they don't stop the wind, and are awful when wet with snow.

@jennlin821: echo this suggestion to just leave the heavier coat at daycare and continue with the fleece car seat coat to go in and out. So far we’ve been able to use my kids coats from last year for a heavy one at home if we needed it so we didn’t need to buy two.

We've had good luck with the North Face Moondoggy and North Face Mossbud for carseat use. We just keep ordering the same coat in larger sizes/colors every year (which I like because it takes the guesswork out of this every year). We tried the Patagonia down sweater a few years back but it definitely didn't seem warm enough for our Chicago winters.

For daycare we have a separate snow coat & snowpants (and mittens and hats!) that we leave there. We have a great local second hand shop, so i'm not spending a fortune on two new sets of snow clothes every year. Last year I even found an extra pair of snowboots to keep at school too.
No more worrying about forgetting something somewhere. Then you can just get a regular fleece jacket for the car, and not worry about a carseat safe snow coat.

Ugh this is such a thorn in my side! For the past 2 years, DD has worn a Northface 3 in 1. She wears the inner down layer in the carseat and the outer waterproof layer gets stuffed in her backpack. When she goes to recess, she puts them both on as two separate coats, doesn't zip them together. It seemed to work okay. I wish I had done that for this year too.

I bought a poofy Columbia snowjacket at end of season last year. Not sure what my strategy is there. We have an LLBean lightweight, packable down jacket and I think she'll probably wear that in the car.

We live in Northern MI, super cold and super snowy. I find snow jackets fairly forgiving, that LLBean jacket she'll probably get 3 years out of.

Following for ideas!

The snozu coats from Costco have worked for my kids. They are very warm (we live in MT with brutal winters) and aren’t two layers but they have two zippers—leave the outside one unzipped and it lets you get the harnesses tight (does that make sense?)

ETA: not sure if they’re at Costco yet? But as a bonus they’re super affordable—like $20-25 for a coat and hat.

The hard part about coats and car seats is that what works for one kid may or may not work for another. We have tried that lands end coat twice but it’s just cut too wide for my DD and creates too much slack. But I know two families who have used it for years with their kids and it’s been perfect. So, unfortunately, you might have to try a few. Many of the car seat safe coats can be warm but I would still want something warmer and more water resistant for long snow play. We typically look for a three in one coat - we use the inner piece for daily wear and in the car seat but can attach or layer the outer piece when playing outside or for really cold weather when we reach our destination.

Can you ask daycare to use one coat for outside play and another coat for when they are leaving? Or try a three in one coat, and you could attach the outer layer when you get to school?

We're also in NJ and have used the lightweight Gap puffers since my 8 year old was a toddler. They're thin enough (in my opinion, at least) not to really impact the car seat but still warm. I wouldn't play in the snow in them but they're perfect for everyday use in the winter.

In the past, my kids wore fleece jackets in the car and then I would carry their winter coat into daycare to leave on a hook (for playground time) and bring their fleece jackets back to the car with me. At the end of the day, I'd walk in with their fleece jackets in hand and put them on for the car ride home.

With covid rules, I'm not walking into daycare anymore...I'd like them to wear their winter coat in the car then straight into the building. Honestly - we'd have hit this point next year anyway with kindergarten.....

I guess I'm just intimidating with finding a winter coat that will be great for playing in NJ snowy winters and also carseat safe.

Has anyone bought the lands end jackets: https://www.landsend.com/products/kids-thermoplume-hooded-jacket/id_347454 before and been comfortable having your child wear it in the carseat?

I don't want to buy one of those intense car seat specific jackets....I'd really like a normal jacket that is car seat safe.
