@Foodnerd81: I love this theory. It’s like his body gave him a heart attack effectively sacrificing his life in order to save his family from a fire. Such a “Jack” thing to do. Also, since he died of a massive heart attack, I think his death was imminent regardless of the fire. The stress on his body from the fire just brought it on sooner. So it’s no one’s fault including his or Kate’s.

I now I’m the worst, but I was dry eyed. I do love how they play with the timelines to show Randall in the future.

I guess it was not a suprise and I new it was going to happen, I just did not know the how. I did think Mandi Moore’s acting was very good.

I do understand going back for the dog. I do not understand packing random family memories in a pillowcase (which were presumably scattered all around the house?!) I think they had him get the memory stuff so that we couldn't hate Kate and/or blame her entirely for his death.

I know people are mad that he went back in for the dog but I couldn’t imagine not trying to save my dog, hearing him barking and knowing he was burning to death! I think I might honestly go back in to try to save him if I knew my kids and spouse were safe. I know it’s crazy and irrational but that furry turd is family to me.

@Autumnmama79: Yes for Jack Shepherd!!!!

I also thought it was dumb to go back and get the dog. They almost couldn't get out! Not to mention he also grab the tape and other shit. I am sorry, if you love your daughter so much, take care of yourself and don't get killed. Getting killed in an accident is one thing, getting killed because of your own (dumb) choice is another. Sigh.

I am also with those of you who didn't cry as much. Yes I cried but at the same time, I was annoyed. I loved the show in the very beginning (at S1 E1). I still love it, but I get turn off by intentional tear jerkers, and this show is one of them. The plots, the lines and everything about it is written to make us cry. Don't get me wrong, I still watch it and I still love the show and I think everything is beautifully presented, the character development is amazing...etc, it is just not the kind that I love intensely / that would make me want to watch it live / rewatch 20 times.

The only two shows that I ever make a point to watch it live: Lost, and Good Behavior (TNT).

@Foodnerd81: interesting article.

I too was underwhelmed by the episode. I was also furious he went back for the dog. I love my dog dearly - but I'd be livid with my husband over that. During the commerical break that follow I made sure to let DH know that while I love our dog our children and him come first. Not to mention, being in the house that long the dog probably wouldnt have survived anyways...given how small it was and how much smoke he had inhaled.

Anyways, I though MM did a GREAT job in the episode. I was devastated to see such a reckless decision bring Jack down. :(

I read a theory on Twitter that Jack was having a heart attack when he woke up- that’s what woke him- so he somehow knew he wasn’t going to make it and wanted to do everything he could for his family. And that’s why he left Rebecca leave. But it doesn’t sound like it from interviews with the cast.

@SweetiePie: I think it’s reasonable that a teenager would be that upset about the dog- teenagers aren’t as mature as grown adults. But jack should have been thinking about his kids needing their father, not the dog.

@Autumnmama79: he said it was too high to jump from Kate’s window/ side of the house. So presumably it was in a hill or something. I believe that part, I know in my house a jump from one of the bedrooms would be 3 stories to an asphalt driveway vs 2 two stories where you could climb off the porch roof to a grassy landing.

@turquoisemama: @Autumnmama79: @lady baltimore: agree with all of you! 1) dumb that he went back in for a dog 2) I was SO MAD at Kate last night when I saw her yelling about the stupid dog. Sorry, dog life does not equal human life.
3) I also think it was a little anticlimactic. I don’t know why, but for some reason I didn’t cry much. Maybe because it was amped up so much. I’ve sobbed many episodes (Williams death being the most) but this one I only got misty eyed when she walked into his room and saw that he really was gone.

@turquoisemama: this! It didn’t make sense. For a show that has so much going for it, and what was purported to be the most anticipated scene, it was just meh. It also seemed like they spent so much time in the house while the inferno was raging! Why didn’t Rebecca and Randall get out the parents window ASAP and why couldn’t jack and Kate go out her window?!?! Wouldn’t you just want to get the heck out any way you could as fast as you could? Those windows were right there and kept being shown on camera.

Curious to see if tomorrow’s episode redeems at all from last night anticlimactic letdown...

@Autumnmama79: Totally agree! I was so mad that he went back in. I have so many problems with this scene. Why didn’t he climb out and go in the front door for the dog?? And how did he possibly get downstairs when they couldn’t even walk through the hall with out a mattress shield? I understand why he wanted to get the dog, but the whole thing just didn’t make sense.

Mandy Moore did a great job during that nearly silent scene in the hospital room!

That said, this plot felt anticlimactic since it's been telegraphed for so long. I enjoyed the fake-out with Randall's family, though. I like it when this show really plays with the timeline to subvert our expectations (like with the crock pot last week).
