@sorrycharlie: ha! I haven't been around much and either didn't know or forgot- congrats! I don't remember where you live, hopefully it has milder winters than where I'm at. We literally could not get out of the driveway many days- it wasn't a fear of germs that kept me inside!

One plus would be snuggles are better in winter! A sleepy baby is always nice but even nicer when it's chilly :)

@sorrycharlie: Hahaha! Definitely better at this point to hear more pros than cons ;)

My LO#1 was a March baby, so it's a little different, but here in the NE it was still cold for the first 6-8 weeks of his life. I just bundled him up and took him out anyway! For my own mental health and happiness I had to go on walks or go to the mall, just to get out of the house. I plan to do the same with LO#2 (EDD January 13). We have a double stroller, a Baby K'tan, and lots of warm newborn clothes. Unless you have a LO with a compromised immune system, I don't think you need to stay indoors for two months just because it's cold/flu season. Just tell people not to touch or hold baby.

Right now at nearly 8 weeks pregnant, all I want to eat is fruit - and this is the perfect time of year for that, berries and watermelon and peaches all summer long. I'm excited to eat eat eat during the holidays (I do that anyway) and pick out cute maternity winter dresses. The second tri (best part of pregnancy) will fall in the mid-summer to mid-fall, which is my favorite time of year anyway. Think of the cute bump and the adorable sweaters/leggings/boots!

I will say the biggest bummer for me is the absence of alcohol during all major holidays. I might treat myself to a small glass of wine here and there once out of the first tri, but Thanksgiving and Christmas just will not be the same.

My husband and I were just talking about this earlier this week. We have a February baby and both think it was absolutely ideal. Of course, we are both January babies ourselves, so that might make us partial!
Pros for us:
I was HOT while pregnant. I loved the cold Iowa winter and not having to wear a coat or shiver while waiting for the car to warm up.
A newborn is the perfect excuse to hibernate during the late February weather. The holidays are over and, for us, there usually isn't anything else going on we'll miss.
Being pregnant during the holidays is the prime eating combination.
C was 10 months old for her first Christmas, so much more interactive and understanding of what was going on.

Cons:
I was just...chubby pregnant in the summer and it was so much harder to feel cute in summer clothes. Winter clothes would have hidden the chub much better!
I had a tough time our first couple of weeks home around 4 PM-7 every night because it got dark so early.
It was a little harder to schedule a baby shower because of everyone's holiday schedules. (I can't believe I even listed that as a con, it was annoying for like, a day.)

I honestly can't think of any other cons and I can think of a dozen more pros. I say go for it!!

@sorrycharlie: I answered already but in terms of the cold/flu season, it really wasn't a big deal. We just didn't go out much (which we couldn't do because of the snow anyway) and we vetoed anyone coming over who thought they might be even a tiny bit sick. DS didn't end up getting his first cold until he started daycare in April.

I agree with @hilsy85. Although it wouldn't be ideal I would do it for a first baby, but I can't imagine being stuck in the house most days with a newborn and a toddler. Plus, DS is in daycare a few days a week and cold/flu season was terrible! I would like to avoid DS bringing colds home to my newborn. I wouldn't mind a late march/april baby though.

My DS was born on 11/19 and I live in Chicago.

Pros:
Will be on the older end for his grade

Cons:
-Cabin fever. I honestly think late Nov is the worst for this as you are stuck inside with a newborn for Dec, Jan and Feb. Yuck.
-Holidays were stressful trying to shop and see everyone with a newborn. His first Christmas was like my worst one ever!
-It's dark all of the time, makes SAD/PPD more of an issue

I think a late Jan/Feb baby is actually doable. You won't be out and about for the first 3-4 weeks anyway. Then, it will finally be spring (ish) weather when you are ready to go on long walks in March.

I will not be trying for a Nov/Dec baby again. I think those are the worst months for a post partum mommy.
I'll try to plan LO2 to be a spring baby :)

My DS was born this past 1/13.

Pros:
-post partum I didn't want or feel like leaving the house and I didn't feel like I was missing out on good weather.
-Not a lot of swelling.
-no diet restrictions around the holidays

Cons
-this winter was the pits and I was afraid of bringing my newborn to his appointments in subzero temps.
- once again this weather was the pits and it was so slick out I really couldn't move around fast enough because I was so heavily pregnant.
-pp blues and seasonal affective disorder doesn't work well together.
- my son will never have a birthday party out doors.

I found that being home on maternity leave during the winter months very much increased my baby blues. You are trapped in the house because you can't take a newborn out during cold and flu season. And the sun goes down very early making the days short and the nights long. My husband and I was waiting to TTC until at least a March due date for these reasons.

I really, REALLY did NOT want a winter baby. But I ended up with a late January EDD anyway. Most of the pros and cons I would add have already been mentioned, but I agree with @hilsy85: that it would make a difference for me #1 versus #2. Where I live, it's ***hot*** in the summer, I really prefer (1) not to be hgely pregnant during July and August, and (2) having a baby that is old enough to be outside in the heat by June/July. I feel so bad for summer newborns here - you are basically housebound in the AC.

One big pro that I haven't seen mentioned is that DD seems to never get cold. I chalk this up to being a January babe, but maybe it's just coincidence. We had her bundled up in the Bjorn and out on walks from day 1, so she is just used to be out in the winter. This past winter it was great (when she was 1) because she was a total winter champ.

That said, I would much *prefer* a spring baby, both so we wouldn't be stuck inside and also so my mat leave would fall during a better part of the year. To my mind, a late February/early March birthday would be best where I live. In the NE, I would probably push that back to late April/May.

D was born 1/17.

Pros:
-Being able to eat anything I wanted over the holidays
-Newborn hibernating
-Not super huge pregnant during the summer
-I had a good excuse to miss all the inlaws' holiday crap
-It was a good opportunity to start the tradition of being home by ourselves on Christmas Day and NOT traveling to see family

Cons:
-I walk to work, and was always worried about slipping on ice with my big preggo belly
-It's cold and flu season
-It is close to the holidays, so that time of year is now even more expensive than it used to be!

@sorrycharlie: We are in the same boat, I think we decided to skip May and start in June. Yes, its still February, but at least toward the end of maternity leave we will at least have spring months to enjoy. My ideal month to give birth is April.

@hilsy85: We have decided LO will still go to daycare for this very reason. The thought of having both a newborn and my crazy toddler makes me nervous! I figured I can keep E home a day or two a week once I get comfortable but I will want her to burn off that extra energy!

This is so helpful! My EDD is 12/7 so it's nice to see the pros/cons! I always figured my maternity leave will be awesome; no need to go out when it's sub zero & snow storming!
