@littlebug: soooo cute!!!

I think we will definitely go with the milk and cookies theme. Here's the invite.. we are going to do from 1-3 on a saturday!

ETA: that is a stock image from etsy - even though it says my LO's name! Not my baby!

D reliably naps 12-2 or 1-3, so we're having the party from 2-5 on the Saturday after his birthday.

We're definitely sticking with superheroes, but "little" superheroes. I just created an invitation using a combination of powerpoint and picmonkey. I downloaded a bunch of clipart from this Etsy shop. https://www.etsy.com/shop/ClipArtopia?section_id=14440059 I'm planning to use those for decorations and stuff. And THEN. THEN I found THIS and I'm getting it for his party and I'm so excited cuz I'm pretty sure it's just about the cutest thing I've ever seen.

I'm thinking a farm theme, just at our house.

I am torn on the timing too - sometimes he naps from 1030-12, and sometimes from 12-2! So i'm thinking 2:30-5 pm? Heavy snacks?

@birdofafeather: Some weekends L only wants 1 nap, some she wants 2. The only predictable time is same as yours, but then I have to provide dinner foods! Haha. I like your idea of doing tapas style though

@Aimed: If you don't really know anyone in your area, I don't see any problem with not having a party. Not like LO will remember! :) Definitely doing all the craziness for my benefit... haha

@Rescuemom10: my 30th is at the end of January (right before yours if I remember correctly!) I have no idea what I'm going I do but I almost wish LO's birthday was closer to mine so we could combine! She already shares a birthday with my SIL though so that's a lot of celebrating!

@swurlygurl: I was going to do midday since she's on two naps but with the community center, I had to book on her birthday and I didn't want to rush around all morning and miss celebrating ourselves so we are doing 4-6:30. In an ideal world I would have done the day after her birthday from 12-2.

Since we're doing evening, I'll provide a dinner of sorts. Maybe tapas style or heavy apps.

I feel bad, I don't think that we will be having a party for LO! We moved across country away from family in the past year and are going home for Christmas so another trip for his bday is not on the cards. We are also in our new neighborhood so recently that we don't really know anyone yet so he will have to settle for a cupcake with Mom and Dad! Its ok though, it probably saving us a kings ransom, but all of your ideas look so cute - I wish I could join!

First off! HEY EVERYONE!!!! Sorry I have been gone for so long. I dont find much time to get on here anymore. I will try to though...

I was just thinking about this, this morning. As most you know DH left when LO was 3 weeks old. We got a couple weeks together after his training and before he left to Afghanistan back in July. He is getting about 10 days at home end of January and will be home on our Birthdays (hers and mine being the same day).

Im torn...I cant decide what to do...

I will be turning 30 and she will be turning 1 on the same day. Its Groundhog Day...so I thought about that theme...

But then I like Lady bugs too. She came home in a cute ladybug outfit from the hospital...

but then her name is honestly a Disney Princess name...not that I want Disney princess...but maybe Princess....I am soooo torn....

what do you all think I should go with.

DH was so fixated and prayed and prayed to get this time off during her Birthday and he is. So I am kind of feeling the pressure.

@birdofafeather: This board is so you! Or what I imagine you are like, anyway ;). I know R's party will be so cute and I will be so envious! What exactly is the concept behind a birthday ring? I've seen it before but admittedly haven't really looked into it.

@littlebug: that "1" was so awesome. I'm not sure we'll have an actual party with decorations and stuff, but if we do, I will do this!

@swurlygurl: I don't really consider myself very girly, but I swoon over gold and pink parties/decorations! I don't know what it is. The first thing that stood out to me from your mood board are those adorable gold fairy jars! I've been meaning to make some animal ones for our bathroom...

So, yeah, I have a little more time than most of you to think about this, but I'm just not sure we'll have a party? We live 8+ hours from all family, and they're all coming to visit over the holidays. I just don't see them making the trek up here again so soon. I plan to make some cupcakes and do something fun, like the children's museum, or something.

@coastmama: i don't think at this age you can get away with only inviting a baby and not the siblings. :( good luck! guest lists are tough

@yerpie110: we'll probably have the same number of invitees! we love having parties and i figure this is the year that we get to decide on the guest list!

@swurlygurl: yeah! originally from LA and been down here for about 5 years. i always see your daughter in her chargers' stuff! :) i love your board! i took some screenshots of mine too. we're going with a feather and arrows theme. i want DH to build a teepee for her, so we'll use that in decor! we just have monthly photos, so i'm going to print them up big but not sure how i'm going to display them yet! i like the idea of doing a clothesline for extra pics though, so that might be an option for you! or make a grid within a frame with all of them so you can see them all at once?

@edelweiss: you're too sweet! her lashes are still long as ever, but her little hair is growing in with some curls, just like mine and DH's. can't wait for it to get longer! we're going with a feather and arrows theme. we put arrows on her announcement as part of her "logo" and then i was reading about waldorf's tradition of birthday crowns and found a feather headdress on etsy and i was sold! my creative juices are flowing! :)

@oliviaoblivia: luckily DH's extended family is the huge part (100+ of aunts, uncles and cousins that we invited to our wedding! FIL is one of 9 and MIL is one of 5) so it was easy to cut them all out. not going to invite them or we would have a wedding-sized party on our hands!

@littlebug: love the superhero theme! i wish we could host at our house, but 600 sq ft isn't conducive to much more than our immediate family and we are invited way more than that!

photos of my pinterest board and the feather headdress that started it all.

We are going to have a small, immediate family and close friends party. Our place just isn't big enough to host a ton of people, and we can't afford to shell out the cash to rent a place, especially so close to the holidays and when we're trying to save money to buy a new house! We just talked last night about doing a superhero theme. He has some superhero prints in his room, and my friend got me these awesome superhero cookie cutters from Williams-Sonoma that I have YET to use! So, yeah...superhero it is!

@oliviaoblivia: Over 60 with just family!? Holy CRAP!

@swurlygurl: Wow, weekly photos. That's awesome. Well done, you!

@yerpie110: we are looking into renting spaces, it's been tough finding things that are more baby friendly. Most of her baby friends and older and I hope to have something fun for them to do.
With family alone we are over sixty. I'm tempted to only have one for her friends because planning for 70+ doesn't appeal to me (or the budget) right now.

@edelweiss: she and the dog are still doing really well. The dog wasn't too enthused when L tried using her as a walker. Fortunately they've worked it out. She really is taking her time with this one. I think it's a fear thing, she's very good at bracing herself for falls and tends to be cautious. If she holds my one finger while walking she's amazing at it. I think she is afraid to let go!

@swurlygurl: My thoughts were the same! And wow, I can't believe you took weekly photos. I am barely keeping up with the monthlies as she is getting impossible to photograph! That is so awesome though.

@edelweiss: I wish my in-laws were more chill! I had to do some serious reeling in and even then, I still think it's a bit out of control for a party LO will never remember. Oh well. My MIL got her hanbok in Korea. Where do you live? I think you can even rent them in some areas. We live close to an area heavily populated by Koreans so they are relatively accessible.

@swurlygurl: love the pink and gold idea! let us know how you decide to display the weekly pictures--that is going to be awesome, and i'm so impressed that you kept it up this long!

@yerpie110: sounds like your LO is going to have a big bash--how fun! where are you getting her hanbok? LO is half korean (my side), but my parents are surprisingly chill about the whole thing and we just moved to the area and don't have many friends here, so we will be low-key. my mom is going to look into getting a little hanbok, and we'll probably do cupcakes. very low-key.

@oliviaoblivia: @birdofafeather: ack! walking! E has been standing for a couple of months and cruising, but no independent steps yet. i was worried he would walk quickly after learning how to stand on his own, but i've heard some babies stay in that stage for a while--honestly i'm a little relieved!

@birdofafeather: so smart to plan for outdoors but have backup indoor space! will cross fingers for nice weather. have you settled on a theme? what juicy tidbits can you share from your secret pinterest board? are R's lashes even longer these days? it is not possible.

@oliviaoblivia: how many people are you thinking of having? birdofafeather had some good suggestions for possible locations! and with how L has been hitting her milestones, i am surprised that she's not training for a marathon yet! how are she and your dog getting along? still close as ever?

We will be having her party at our house - indoors, sadly (it's already 19 degrees today - ugh!). The guest list will be family and a few friends - between 20 and 30 people. I'm thinking pink and gold for the theme. That's the 'theme' of her nursery (I feel like it's not a nursery anymore since she's so big? :( )
I've been taking weekly pictures (I am SO excited to stop this once she turns 1!!), so I need a cute way to display 52 pictures!

@birdofafeather: I didn't know you live in SD! (I went and stalked your bio page after you said you lived in SoCal). That's where I'm from! Just left 3 years ago.

@coastmama: I feel the same way about gifts! I have a couple close girlfriends that I want to invite because we're close and they love L, but I dont' want them to feel obligated to bring gifts. A 'No gifts please' would not go over well with my group though. I was thinking about just bringing it up in conversation somehow when we're out to lunch one day...

@oliviaoblivia: 4 steps! AHH!! I'm not ready for walking... I miss my itty bitty baby! :(

@yerpie110: That's exactly what I'm doing with L's theme - I want to make it as sweet and girly as possible while I still can, before she gets her own opinions

First birthdays are the a huge deal in Korean culture, so aside from the fact that L is the first grandchild on both sides, she's also half-Korean and both grandparents are sparing no expense for this occasion. I'd prefer to just take the cash (just being honest), but obviously I can't ask for that, haha. At least I've managed to reel it in a bit as I certainly feel there is no need to throw her a mini-wedding reception. We found a great deal at a local restaurant and I'll be DIYing most of the decor. It's shabby chic themed so think pink, lace, mason jars, roses, etc. Super girly! And I picked that theme so I could reuse my wedding decor, haha. I also figure she'll have plenty of birthdays to have more child-ish themes since she'll have a say then, so might as well make use of what I have now. I have had to learn about various traditions for these Korean birthday parties as my husband knows nothing (of course), but it's been a surprisingly fun bonding experience with my MIL. We'll be inviting 50-60 people plus 10-15 kids. I enjoy planning events so it hasn't been too stressful yet :)

@coastmama: We will be asking for donations to a non-profit in lieu of gifts! I spent a few summers volunteering with a specific organization and my time there really changed my life....so much so, that my LO's middle name is in honor of the name of the town where I spent most of my time, and all my future LO's middle names will be a variation of that name (luckily it's a name where lots of variations are possible). We'll be asking for donations to that non profit in lieu of gifts. I've been to other parties who've done something similar and no one had seemed to mind!

@oliviaoblivia: In the beginning, we were considering renting out the community rooms in the apartment complexes that our friends lived in. Most are incredibly nice and it's pretty cheap! For us, just given the number of people and the amount of food my MIL was insisting on getting catered, plus set-up, serving, and clean-up, it didn't end up being worth it, but maybe something to be considered.

@birdofafeather: Liv is the same way. Walks if she is holding a toy and isn't thinking about it. She's changed her cruising style lately too. Now she walks alongside furniture and holds on with one hand. I've been surprised with how slow her progress has been with this one. With crawling she got on all fours and crawled a few days later. L has been taking steps for over a month already. She definitely been more driven about it the past week though.

@oliviaoblivia: yeah, our place is teeny-tiny and we couldn't hold everyone even if we could use our patiospace. i was brainstorming a ton when we lucked on this park/center combo. i was looking at restaurants (too much $), a local nature center (too small), etc. Do you have any community centers, kid's gyms, YMCA by you?

R's good! i was going to reply on the other thread that she has to be distracted when she takes some steps. we have to put something in her hands/mouth and then stand her up and then she comes to us. she's started transferring from cruising along the couch to my chair to the coffee table by taking a step out, so she's working on it, but not as much progress as i expected since the first steps came out of nowhere!
