@twist, funny you say that, my chiropractor tested me while I was laying on my pillow and he said it was causing more problems because it wasn't supportive and I was straining my neck in my sleep! I got a new pillow and started to get some relief!

My dentist deals with my tmj. A bite splint at night does wonders.

My sister found out that she basically wore down the cartilage in her jaw bones, like where they meet, and that causes her problems. Her dentist referred her to the tmj specialist and they were the ones who were able to help her out. She doesn't have half the problems she used to have with her jaw.

I have this. Super annoying. One time it got so super swollen that I couldn't close my jaw. Went to the dentist for it. My biggest problem is that I clench my teeth (all the time) which causes grief. Other aggrevations can be eating hard foods, opening your mouth too wide and chewing gum (there's more, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head).

@blackbird: Seriously, I think this is exactly what my problem is. I haven't had pain in a while but I went through ALL the same things you did and tried all the things you did and nothing helped. I didn't go to a chiropractor but I wonder if I subconsciously changed something in my sleeping or what that adjusted my neck somehow and fixed the problem?? My dentist is kind of baffled! (and so am i)

I think it sounds like TMJ. My jaw clicks or pops. Mine can be a little painful, though, and sometimes, I can only open up my mouth halfway.

For my insurance, I believe I had to have a dentist diagnose the clicking/ popping. I've tried night guards and now I have braces to relign my jaw and also my teeth needed to be straighten as well. (I never had braces as a kid.)

I believe if your dental treatments don't work and it's still hurts, then you can see a medical dr to possibly have surgery. Since you don't have any pain, you'll probably won't have to go that far.

BTW, I did ask my GP dr and he is the one who recommended asking dentist. I looked into my medical insurance and it does say, it's covered under dental and for severe cases- it's medical.

Oh, having braces has reduced my pain and clicking.

It sounds like TMJ. BUT i will say...i was having lots of jaw issues, saw a bunch of people. Some wanted to realign my teeth, put me in braces, do surgery, i even had an arthroscopic jaw clean-out for scar tissue. I wore mouth guards at night. Didn't help. I could barely fit a sandwich into my mouth some days. Nothing helped.

Finally saw a chiropractor at the behest of a dentist....turns out the issue was in my neck, which was messing up my jaw real real bad. My chiropractor still adjusts my jaw when it acts up. It basically gets off its track--one side will be inflamed, the other is fine, and they don't open evenly, so it ends up getting aggravated. But all the face pain, clicking, etc that i was experiencing is gone. GONE!!!

I have major (painful) jaw issues. I would start off at your dentist and let them direct you to the right person. My dentist has been amazing and if it does have to do with your wisdom teeth, he'll be able to recommend an oral surgeon (if that's what you need for your wisdom teeth).

Uh I have this same issue. But it hasn't quite become bad enough for me to find the motivation to deal with it. Both my Dentist and my primary care physician have only been able to suggest wearing a guard at night but that just makes my clenching worse! I think an oral surgeon would probably be your best bet.

Tmj specialist would be my recommendation. My sister had problems like this and now has a mouth brace she wears at night.

This started when I was 18 (I'm 25 now). I still have my wisdom teeth in.

My jaw always pops (painlessly) when I open it completely.

Whenever I do a lot of chewing, it starts getting tighter and tighter and will pop loudly every time I open my mouth to take another bite of food.

If I keep pushing it, eventually it will just completely lock up and I can't open my jaw wider than an inch or so. It doesn't hurt. It is just locked.

After some time as gone by, the jaw relaxes and I am able to open it again.

What type of doctor should I see for this? Ear nose and throat? Oral surgeon?
