depending on how flexible the employers are, i'd just apply when you're up to it (2-3 months) and just give them a head's up that you already have something in the works for vacation if you get the job. worse comes to worst, they won't pay you for that week.

A lot of jobs may not give you vacation up front. We ran into this glitch when my husband got a job. We ALMOST had to cancel the entire thing. So if you KNOW you'll need that time off, i'd wait just a couple more months

@Lozza I am new, but it would likely be a job through people I know already (2 professors have offered) and it's a job where although they may be able to find new candidates, they try to keep their turnover low. We'd be leaving at only 3-4 months on the job.

@Foodnerd81 We're planning on being gone about a week.

I'm wondering if maybe DH will be able to structure his work schedule to be able to go on this trip earlier... Probably not, but it's a thought!

I think most places would be willing to work with you on time off earlier than normal. How long are you planning to be gone? If it is a week or less, I would think that once they offer you the job, you can bring it up then and let them know. Odds are they may not pay you for the time off since you won't have accrued vacation time, but people have lives. The same thing could happen when you are just switching full time jobs.
Plus, you just don't know how long it will take to find a job, so starting earlier is probably better, assuming you are sure you want to go back around then (which it sounds like you are).

I'd say it probably depends on your field and the skill level of the position. If you're easily replaceable, and there are plenty of good candidates, then a company may not want to give you the time off at 6 months. If it's a job where you can offer a more specialized skill set, and they're going to hire you with the expectation that you'll be there for a long time, I think that unless you're talking about taking off a ton of time at 6 months, they'd probably be willing to grant you leave without pay or something. Also, take into account how long it takes for companies to process applications in your field. Government jobs can take a year to process, from application to start date! (or longer, but you get my point).

As I am coming up on my due date, I am starting to think about how long I want to stay at home with LO before applying for jobs. My gut says to start applying when LO is 2-3 months old, but my husband and I already have a trip planned when she will be closer to 6 months old. We've had this planned for over a year (no tickets yet though) based on DH's work schedule. Lots of family are planning to meet the baby at that time. So I'm also contemplating not applying until around that time. I'm still taking MA classes so it's not like I haven't been doing anything at all, but the longer I wait, the harder it is to explain away all this time of not working. I'd also like to put my classes to use!

I have been offered a couple of jobs, one of which said to call after the baby, and they might be more understanding because the job will be working with children, but still.. I feel like if I wait til the trip I could end up being unemployed for much longer than that... :(

Any advice?
