@Rubies: Wow! Sneaky! You wouldn't be allowed to do that in NZ, you have to have worked at least 10 hours avg a week for 6 months before you can get any maternity leave.

@travelgirl1: I would definitely tell them asap :) they don't have a right to be annoyed if they advertised it as 3 months only!

Thanks ladies!
@caffeinated: Ha ha, I am showing, I just wore a flowy top and carried my portfolio in front of my belly!

The agency just rang and offered me the position, but she said it could be between three and six months. It's the first time they've said six months, so I think I need to email the employer and come clean. I think they might be a bit annoyed but the position was advertised as a two-three month contract, so I don't feel too bad about it. Well I do feel bad, but I think I did the right thing.

@Rubies: Really? Wow, I thought you had to work somewhere for a specific period of time before you could qualify for the year of leave (to avoid this kind of circumstance). I've never heard of someone doing that before.

Hmmm... this is a little sticky, given that it's only a short-term position so far. However, since you will obviously be showing at some time in the near future, I would tell them once you get the offer. At that point in time I would ask them to clarify any maternity leave policies, and also tell them very explicitly that you do plan on returning to work after having the baby, and that you are very excited about the idea of longer-term employment. You don't want them to get the wrong idea that you might want to vacate your post after having the baby. I successfully interviewed for a faculty job when I was about 24 weeks pregnant (and certainly showing!), so it can be done.

Without any personal experience and with no knowledge of this kind of thing, my immediate thought would be to inform them that you are. I'm only saying this because last year at my workplace, a woman applied for a coveted position in the month of June for a job that would begin in September. When she applied, she was already 6 months pregnant but hid it very well. When she got the job, she then announced that she would be going on mat leave (and in Canada, mat leave is one year!) in Sept! So, that meant our employer had to find yet ANOTHER replacement for this pregnant woman whose job was now secure for her return! What she did was quite "smart" and "strategic" but she is very much disliked for her stunt.

I'm assuming the job was posted as a three-month contract? So, I don't think it would come across like you're trying to deceive anyone because as you've said, that's what you're available for. If you get an offer, I would suggest you say that you are available for the three-month contract, but not more since you're pregnant.

I'm jealous that you aren't showing at 23 weeks!

I had the same problem. Since you are past 3 months i would tell them once you get an offer.

Hi bees

I'm a long time lurker but posting for the first time today : )

I'm 23 weeks pregnant and just interviewed for a job. It's starting out as a three month temporary contract, which I can easily do in the time I've got left. But, they've made it clear that if it works out, they'd like it to be a longer arrangement.

I just had a call from them negotiating money so I think they might offer it to me but, if they do, should I tell them I'm pregnant?

The way I look at it is that they're not offering long term yet, just three months, so I'm not decieving anybody. That said, I do think they'll feel a bit taken back when they find out I'm preggers, if they want to make it long term.

What do you think? Should I drop them an email and tell them?
